S. K. Riley-Poku is a Ghanaian lawyer,educationist and politician. He was the Minister for Defence of Ghana between 1979 and 1981.
Riley-Poku represented the Amansie District Council of the Ashanti Region in the Constituent Assembly which drafted the 1979 Ghana constitution prior to the 1979 Ghanaian general election. [1]
Riley-Poku was a member of the People's National Party and was appointed by Hilla Limann as the Minister for Defence in his government in 1979. [2] He remained in this position until December 1981 when the government was overthrown in a coup d'état. [3] Following his time in government,he continued practising as a lawyer. [4]
Prior to being in politics,Riley-Poku served as the headmaster of Sekondi College between 1966 and 1969. [5] He later practised as a lawyer and was a member of the Ghana Bar Association. [6] During this time,he was also a member of the board of the Volta River Authority. [7]
Jerry John Rawlings was a Ghanaian military officer and politician who led the country for a brief period in 1979,and then from 1981 to 2001. He led a military junta until 1992,and then served two terms as the democratically elected President of Ghana.
Hilla Limann,was a Ghanaian diplomat and politician who served the President of Ghana from 24 September 1979 to 31 December 1981. He served as a diplomat in Lomé,Togo and Geneva,Switzerland.
The Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) was the name of the Ghanaian government after the People's National Party's elected government was overthrown by Jerry Rawlings,the former head of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council,in a coup d'état on 31 December 1981. He remained in power until 7 January 1993. In a statement,Rawlings said that a "holy war" was necessary due to the PNP's failure to provide effective leadership and the collapse of the national economy and state services.
