Line S 5 is a S-Bahn line in the Rhine-Ruhr network. It is operated by DB Regio. It runs from Dortmund Hbf via Witten Hbf to Hagen Hbf. There are current plans to expand the line by building five new stations. It is operated between Dortmund and Witten at 30-minute intervals and between Witten and Hagen at 60-minute intervals using Alstom Coradia Continental type 1440.3 and class 422.
Line S 5 runs over the Elberfeld–Dortmund railway opened by the Bergisch-Märkische Railway Company on 20 December 1848. [2]
S-Bahn services commenced on the whole length of the route on 29 May 1994. [3]

Line S1 is a S-Bahn line on the Rhine-Ruhr network. It is operated by DB Regio. It runs from Dortmund via Bochum and Essen to Duisburg. From there it travels south to Düsseldorf and Hilden before continuing to Solingen. It is operated on weekdays at 15-minute intervals between Dortmund Hbf and Essen Hbf, at 20-minute intervals between Düsseldorf Hbf and Solingen and at 30-minute intervals between Düsseldorf and Essen, using coupled sets of class 422 four-car electrical multiple units.
Line S7 is an S-Bahn service on the Rhine-Ruhr network in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, between Wuppertal and Solingen. The line has been operated by RheinRuhrBahn since 10 December 2023 at 20-minute intervals, using Alstom Coradia LINT 41 diesel multiple unit vehicles.
Line S 9 is an S-Bahn line on the Rhine-Ruhr network, operated by DB Regio. It runs from Recklinghausen Hbf / Haltern am See in the north through Gladbeck West - Essen Hbf to Hagen (Westphalia) Main Station in the south. During the day two services per hour run between Wuppertal and Gladbeck West, one service per hour between Gladbeck and Recklinghausen Hbf and Gladbeck and Haltern am See and one service per hour between Wuppertal and Hagen, using FLIRT 3XL electric multiple units.

Today, it has two to four tracks and is electrified and classified as a main line.

The Düsseldorf-Derendorf–Dortmund Süd railway is a partially closed line in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia from Düsseldorf-Derendorf station to Dortmund South station. Parts of it are still busy, including two sections used for the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn.
The Wupper-Express is a Regional-Express service in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) running between Aachen and Dortmund via Mönchengladbach, Düsseldorf, Wuppertal and Hagen. It is the third most widely used Regional-Express line in the area administered by the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) with approximately 24,000 passengers a day. The line is part of the Rhein-Ruhr-Express (RRX) network and is operated by National Express Germany.
The Düsseldorf–Solingen railway is a railway in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a 19 kilometre line, entirely double track and electrified with overhead line. It is now used by the S 1 of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn and Regional Express service RE47, operated by Regiobahn.
Hagen-Vorhalle station is a large marshalling yard of national importance and a small passenger station for local services in the Hagen district of Vorhalle in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It was opened in its present form in 1910 in and is one of the nine major marshalling yards in Germany and a key element of the 200X program to upgrade Germany's freight infrastructure initiated in 2006 by the former Railion Deutschland AG. The station is located on the Ruhr Valley Railway and the Elberfeld–Dortmund line. The station was opened on the 9 March 1849 as Herdecke station and successively renamed as Herdecke Süd, Herdecke-Vorhalle and Vorhalle. It was renamed as Hagen-Vorhalle in the early 1950s.
Dortmund-Barop station is on Barop Marktplatz in the Hombruch district of the city of Dortmund in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia on the Elberfeld–Dortmund line. The station is currently classified as a category 5 station. It is served by regional services and Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn line S 5.

Dortmund-Oespel station is in the district of Oespel of the city of Dortmund in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It was built on a loop line off the Witten/Dortmund–Oberhausen/Duisburg railway, which was opened on 24 September 1983 from Bochum-Langendreer to Dortmund-Dorstfeld. The station was opened on 24 September 1983 and it is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 5 station.
Dortmund West station is a railway station in the Dortmund district of Marten in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 6 station. It was opened on 3 June 1984 on the Osterath–Dortmund Süd railway completed between the old Dortmund-Dorstfeld station and the old Dortmund Süd (south) station by the Rhenish Railway Company on 19 November 1874 and electrified on 25 May 1984. It is proposed to build platforms on the Elberfeld–Dortmund railway to provide interchange with S-Bahn line S 5.
Line S8 is an S-Bahn line operated by DB Regio on the Rhine-Ruhr network. It runs from Hagen Hauptbahnhof in the west to Mönchengladbach Hauptbahnhof in the east via Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof, Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof and Neuss Hauptbahnhof. It is operated between Düsseldorf and Wuppertal-Oberbarmen station at 20-minute intervals using class 422 electric multiple units. One out of three trains continues to Hagen, running hourly. An S 9 service and three Regional-Express services also operate between Wuppertal-Vohwinkel and Hagen each hour.
