SM Mizanur Rahman is a retired police officer and former director general of the Rapid Action Battalion. [1] He is a former commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. [2]
Rahman was appointed Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police three hours prior to the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack as the commissioner Ashraful Huda went abroad that day. [3] In August 2012, he provided deposition at the trial of the attack. [3] [4] He stated State Minister of Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar ordered the Bangladesh Army to destroy two grenades which had not exploded despite Rahman's protest that the grenades were vital evidence. [3] The attack targeted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and he speculated that Babar was involved in the attack. [3] He also blamed deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police east Obaidur Rahman for poor security at the rally. [3] Barbar ordered him to handle the matter and deal with protestors. [3] Barbar also ordered him to not file cases or take action against officers he believed had neglected their duty in failing to provide security to the rally of Awami League. [3]
In 2005, Rahman closed Rafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Motijheel Thana, for being involved in the murder of a student of Mirpur Commerce College. [5] [6] He prevented International Khatme Nabuwat Movement, Bangladesh from defacing a mosque of the Ahmadiyy Community in December. [7] He opened six new police stations under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. [8] He was criticized along with other law enforcement officials for failing to track or stop the activities of Harkatul Jihad al Islami-Bangladesh. [9] He blamed it on lack of intel from the intelligence agencies. [9]
In 2006, activists of the Jubo Mohila League accused police officers of using excessive force to break up their protests outside the prime minister's office. [10] They filed a complaint with a magistrate against the officers including Rahman. [10] During his tenure police officers beat up Asif Hossain Khan and others at the Bangladesh Shooting Sport Federation Complex in Gulshan following a scuffle between the chauffeur of Deputy Inspector General of Special Branch, Dr Sadiqur Rahman, and a guard of the complex. [11] He closed the Officer-in-Charge of Kamrangichar Police Station after he offered a bribe to a reporter of Channel 1. [12]
Rahman served as the commissioner of commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police till October 2006. [13] Rahman was the chief of the Criminal Investigation Department for two days on 31 October 2006, before he was posted to Rapid Action Battalion on 2 November. [13] [14] The DIG of Rajshahi Range Naim Ahmed replaced him as commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. [14] In February 2007, Baharul Alam replaced Rahman as director general of Rapid Action Battalion. [13]
Rahman went on leave preparatory to retirement in 2012. [3]

The 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina, the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. Hasina also sustained some injuries in the attack.
Lutfozzaman Babar is Bangladeshi former politician, who served as the State Minister of Home Affairs in the Khaleda Zia Cabinet from 2001 to 2006, as a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The Special Security and Protection Battalion (SPBN) is a specialized unit of the Bangladesh Police. The battalion provides protection to the President of Bangladesh, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and any person designated as VIP by the Government including visiting foreign dignitaries. It is also responsible for the security of VIPs’ offices and residences and venues of programs. It works alongside Special Security Force, Special Branch, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and President Guard Regiment.
The Shapla Square protests, also known as the siege of Dhaka, Operation Shapla, Operation Flash Out by security forces, was the protests and subsequent shootings of 5 and 6 May 2013 at Shapla Square, located in the Motijheel district, the main financial area of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The protests were organized by the Islamist advocacy group, Hefazat-e Islam, who were demanding the enactment of a blasphemy law. The government responded to the protests by cracking down on the protesters using a combined force drawn from the police, Rapid Action Battalion and paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh to drive the protesters out of Shapla Square.
The Detective Branch is a specialized unit of the Bangladesh Police. It mostly deals with investigative activities and special operations in sensitive cases and places. The main task of the detectives of this unit is to collect the information behind the news from the grass root level for the purpose of investigating the events of any serious hidden crime or unsolved historical crime. Also, if necessary, they arrest important accused.

Asaduzzaman Mia, is a retired Bangladeshi police officer who served as the 33rd Police commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the longest serving commissioner and a former chief executive officer of National Security Affairs Cell under the Cabinet Division. During his tenure as DMP Commissioner, Dhaka Metropolitan Police was considered to be at its peak.
Shafiqul Islam is a retired police officer who served as the 34th police commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. He was made the DMP commissioner on 14 September 2019. He previously served as the chief of the Criminal Investigation Department.
