SS Culross was a 7,331 ton cargo ship which was built as Empire Antigua in 1945. She was renamed Culross in 1946. In 1960 she was renamed Akastos, serving under a number of flags until 1968 when she was renamed Marina, being scrapped in that year.

History

Empire Antelope was built by Shipbuilding Corporation Ltd, Newcastle upon Tyne as yard number 12. She was launched on 20 November 1945 and completed in February 1946. [2] Empire Antelope was built for the Ministry of War Transport and managed by Dodd, Thompson & Co Ltd. In 1946, she was sold to the South Georgia Company, and renamed Culross She operated under the management of Christian Salvesen Ltd, Leith. In 1958, she was laid up at Gairloch. In 1960, Culross was sold to Navigazione y de Comercio Apolo Ltda, Lebanon and renamed Akastos. In 1961 she was reflagged to Greece. She was operated under the management of N J Vlassopulous, London between 1960 and 1966 when she was reflagged to Cyprus and management was transferred to Aegis Shipping Ltd, London. In 1967, Akastos was sold to the Blue Cross Transocean Co, Athens. She was renamed Marina in 1967 [3] and scrapped in Hamburg later that year, arriving on 4 August 1968 [2]

Official Numbers were a forerunner to IMO Numbers.

Empire Antigua [4] and Culross [5] used the UK Official Number 169207. Empire Antigua used Code Letters GDTB. [4]

In 1966 she was resold and renamed Unique Carrier, serving until 1969 when she was scrapped in Taiwan.

SS Empire Adur was a 1,479 ton steamship which was built in 1920 as the Griffdu. She was renamed Noyo in 1935 and in 1940 was sold to Thailand, being renamed Nang Suang Nawa, being seized in 1942 and renamed Empire Adur. She was sold to Thailand in 1948, reverting to Nang Suang Nawa and was lost at sea in 1955 while being towed to Hong Kong for scrapping.

Empire Asquith was a 7,082 ton cargo ship which was built in 1944. In 1947 she was sold and renamed Brockley Hill. Further name changes were Starcrest in 1951, Argosy in 1957 and Nezihi Ipar in 1960. She was scrapped in 1970.

Empire Balfour was a 7,201 ton refrigerated cargo ship which was built by Lithgows Ltd, Port Glasgow in 1944 for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was sold to her managers in 1949 and renamed Barton Grange. In 1958 she was sold to the Western Steamship Co Ltd, Hong Kong and renamed Sunlight. In 1962, she was sold to the Pan-Norse Steamship Co SA, Panama, serving for a further five years until scrapped in 1967.

Empire Balham was a 1,061 ton cargo ship which was built by G Brown & Co (Marine) Ltd, Greenock in 1944 for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was sold to Queenship Navigation Ltd in 1946 and renamed Nordic Queen. In 1958 she was sold to the Maldavian National Shipping Corp (Ceylon) Ltd and renamed Maldive Star, serving for a further fourteen years until scrapped in 1967.

Pompeji was a 2,917 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1939 by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany. She was seized as a war prize in 1945 and renamed Empire Blackwater. Ownership passed to the British Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and then the United States Maritime Commission (USMC). In 1949 she was sold to a Danish company and renamed Krusaa. She was sold in 1960 to a Finnish company and renamed Krucia and later Helvi. In 1969 she was sold to a Panamanian company and renamed Eastern Faith. She was scrapped in 1975.

Basildon was a 1,055 gross register tons (GRT) coaster that was built in 1945 as Empire Bromley for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was sold into civil service in 1946 and renamed Levenwood. Another change of ownership saw her renamed Basildon and she served under this name until scrapped in 1967.

Gripfast was a 2,852 GRT coaster which was built in 1941 as Empire Brook for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was sold into civil service in 1946 and renamed Stancliffe. She ran aground in 1948 and was declared a constructive total loss, having broken her back. Despite this, she was repaired and saw further service as Gripfast, Capetan Costas P, Karine M and Pitsa before sinking when under tow on 6 December 1967.

Empire Conrad was a 7,009 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1942 by Charles Connell & Co Ltd, Clydebank for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was sold to a French company in 1952 and renamed Franta and then resold later that year and renamed Nia. In 1954, she was sold to a Panamanian company and renamed Eugenia. She served until 1967, when she was scrapped.
