SS Fatima was the first ship ever registered in Karachi, Pakistan in 1948. [1] It was cargo vessel belonging to East & West Steamship Company.
The ship was named after Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, the First Lady of Pakistan. [1]
She was built by Burn and Company, Howrah, Calcutta in 1942. [2] She was then a 'Basset' class naval trawler of the Royal Indian Navy under the name SHILLONG, pennant number T.250, deployed in anti-submarine and minesweeping duties. Her engine was a triple-expansion steam engine built by Lobnitz & Company, Renfrew. Sold out of the navy in 1947 and converted to a cargo ship in 1948. On 11 August 1948, she was registered at the newly established Port of Registry at Karachi. [1]
It was scrapped in March 1962. [2]
Sitara-e-Jurat is the third highest military award of Pakistan. It was established in 1957 after Pakistan became a republic; however, it was instituted retrospectively back to 1947. HMS Port Quebec was a British motor ship that was designed and launched in 1939 to be the refrigerated cargo ship Port Quebec, but completed in 1940 as an auxuiliary minelayer. In 1944 she was converted into an aircraft component repair ship and renamed HMS Deer Sound. In 1947 she was returned to her owner, Port Line, and completed as a cargo ship. She was scrapped in Taiwan in 1968.
Jamnagar was a 576 GRT coaster which was built in 1924 for Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanagar. In 1941 she entered service with the Royal Indian Navy. In 1944, she was sold into merchant service before being requisitioned by the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Bulbul. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Hellenic Bulbul. The name Hellenic Bee had been allocated but she ran aground and sank before the proposed name change could be implemented.
Holmbury was a 7,058 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1943 for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) as Empire Canyon. In 1947 she was sold and renamed Holmbury. In 1960, she was sold to Pakistan and renamed Ilyasbaksh. In 1965, she was detained by India as war had broken out between India and Pakistan. She was declared a war prize and seized by the Indian Government. She was scrapped in 1970.
Muhammadi Steamship Company Limited was a Pakistani shipping company which was headquartered on Muhammad House in Karachi. It was one of the oldest locally owned shipping companies in Pakistan until it was nationalised in 1974.

Possehl was a 2,369 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1921 by Howaldtswerke, Kiel, Germany for a German shipping line. She was seized by the British in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Exe. In 1947, she was transferred to the Greek Government and renamed Hermoupolis. She was sold into merchant service in 1948 and used as a depôt ship. Following a sale in 1966, she was renamed Pilion. In 1967, she was sold to a Cypriot company and renamed Nigma. Laid up in November 1967 following boiler damage, she was scrapped in 1969.

The New Bern Victory (MCV-639) was a type VC2-S-AP2 Victory ship built by Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyards. The Maritime Administration cargo ship was the 639 ship built. Her keel was laid on January 15, 1945. She was launched on March 8, 1945 and completed on March 31, 1945. The 10,600-ton ship was constructed for the Maritime Commission. The American Export Line and later the Isthmian Steamship Company operated her under the United States Merchant Marine act for the War Shipping Administration. Named for the city of New Bern, North Carolina.
Vice Admiral Ahmad Zamir, HI(M), SJ was a three-star rank admiral in the Pakistan Navy. Prior to his death in 1985, he was serving as the managing director of Karachi Shipyard and Engineering from 1983 until 1985.
