The Saab 107 was a proposed series of small airliners that were intended to be manufactured by Saab AB of Sweden, but were never built.
Two variants of a feederliner project were under development at Svenska Aeroplan AB from 1966 to 1968 with a projected first date of operation in 1973, the Saab 1071 and the Saab 1073. [1] The design goals for both designs were minimization of turnaround time at an airport as well as production and operation costs. [2] Following an intensive market research Saab wanted to compete with terrestrial transport in both aspects. A model of the 1071 was presented at the Hannover air show in April 1968 and model photos as well as illustrations of both projects appeared in the specialized press at about the same time. [3] [4] [5] Saab needed foreign partners to share the development costs, and as none were forthcoming, Project 10 was abandoned. [6]
The Saab 1071 was projected for very short distances between small domestic airfields and international hub airports. The design featured a high wing with rectangular plan form, a circular pressurized fuselage for 40 passengers and four turboprop engines in the 800 h.p. class. Development costs were estimated at 100 million SEK and the final unit sales costs at maximal 5 million SEK. Wings and fuselage were designed to be easily stretchable at low development costs if needed later on. The wing was equipped with simple, single-pivoted slot flaps to obtain high lift for short take offs within 800 m runway. Propeller thrust reversal was intended to be used for reduction of the landing distance.[ citation needed ]
The second project Saab 1073 was intended for passenger and freight transport on somewhat longer domestic lines between airports that offer runways of 1200 m length or more. For this, the STOL requirement was less severe and for a better cruising economy the design featured two turbofans in nacelles under the high wing which had a moderate wing sweep. The T-tail kept the elevator out of the exhaust jets. The intended turbofans were in the 10,000 lb-thrust class (Rolls-Royce Trent) and the passenger capacity amounted to 80. Development costs were estimated at 300 million SEK and the final sales price at maximal 15 million SEK. Realization of this project would have needed public support as well as cooperation with a large foreign aircraft manufacturer.[ citation needed ]

This was intended as a highly fuel-efficient aircraft employing new technologies, but it was postponed indefinitely as the price of oil dropped during the 1980s.
The British Aerospace Jetstream 41 is a turboprop-powered feederliner and regional airliner, designed by British Aerospace as a stretched version of the popular Jetstream 31. Intended to compete directly with 30-seat aircraft like the Embraer Brasilia, Dornier 328 and Saab 340, the new design eventually accommodated 29 passengers in a two-by-one arrangement like the Jetstream 31. Eastern Airways of the UK is the biggest operator of Jetstream 41s in the world, with 14 in the fleet.
The Dassault Mercure is a twin-engined narrow-body jet-powered airliner developed and manufactured by French aircraft firm Dassault Aviation. According to Dassault, it was the first large-scale European cooperative civil aeronautics programme.
The Tupolev Tu-334 was a Russian short-to-medium range airliner project that was developed to replace the ageing Tu-134s and Yak-42s in service around the world. The airframe was based on a shortened Tu-204 fuselage and a scaled-down version of that aircraft's wing. Unlike the Tu-204, however, the Tu-334 has a T-tail and engines mounted on the sides of the rear fuselage instead of under the wings. With the nationalisation of the Russian aircraft companies in 2009 to form United Aircraft Corporation it was decided not to continue with the programme.
The Shanghai Y-10 or Yun-10 is a four engined narrow-body jet airliner developed in the 1970s by the Shanghai Aircraft Research Institute. The plane used Boeing's 707-320C as reference, designed according to Federal Aviation Regulation.
The Saab 90 Scandia was a civil passenger aeroplane, manufactured by Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget (SAAB), in Linköping, Sweden. In 1944, as it was becoming clear that hostilities in Europe would soon be at an end, SAAB realised that the company had to diversify from purely military endeavours if it were to survive. The board therefore decided to put into action a plan to manufacture a twin-engined, short- to medium-haul passenger aircraft, as a successor for the Douglas DC-3.
The Tupolev Tu-244 was a proposed supersonic transport (SST) aircraft, developed from the Tu-144. It implemented novel features such as cryogenic fuel to enable flight distances of up to 10,000 km (6,200 mi) and would have carried up to 300 passengers. The project was cancelled in 1993.
The Xian H-8 bomber was a Chinese military aircraft and a possible successor to the aging twin-engined Xian H-6 jet bomber. It is referred to as Xian H-7 in some sources. The proposed designs were reported to be an enlarged H-6 with four or six underwing engines, but the project was canceled in 1971 in early development stage.
The Foxjet ST600 was a small business jet under development in the United States in the late 1970s. Problems with development, particularly in finding a suitable powerplant, caused the project to be abandoned before any substantial work on the prototype had been done, but the concept proved to be ahead of its time, foreshadowing the very light jets of thirty years later.
The Cessna Citation V is a business jet built by Cessna that was in production from 1989 until 2011. During that time, 774 such craft were made. The first Model 560 prototype, a stretched version of the Citation S/II, flew in August 1987 and was certified on December 9, 1988.
The Rolls-Royce RB.162 is a lightweight British turbojet engine produced by Rolls-Royce Limited. Developed in the early 1960s, it was specially designed for use as a lift engine for VTOL aircraft but was also used in a later variant of the Hawker Siddeley Trident airliner as an auxiliary boost engine. A smaller related variant, the RB.181 remained a design project only, as did a turbofan version designated RB.175.
The Rolls-Royce RB.141 Medway was a large low-bypass turbofan engine designed, manufactured and tested in prototype form by Rolls-Royce in the early-1960s. The project was cancelled due to changes in market requirements that also led to the development and production of the smaller but similar Rolls-Royce Spey, and the cancellation of the Armstrong Whitworth AW.681 military transport aircraft project.
The Hawker Siddeley HS.141 was a 1970s design study and submission for a British V/STOL airliner requirement. Designed by Hawker Siddeley Aviation and tested in wind tunnels neither prototypes nor production aircraft were produced.
The fuel economy in aircraft is the measure of the transport energy efficiency of aircraft. Fuel efficiency is increased with better aerodynamics and by reducing weight, and with improved engine brake-specific fuel consumption and propulsive efficiency or thrust-specific fuel consumption. Endurance and range can be maximized with the optimum airspeed, and economy is better at optimum altitudes, usually higher. An airline efficiency depends on its fleet fuel burn, seating density, air cargo and passenger load factor, while operational procedures like maintenance and routing can save fuel.
