Sadya Afreen Mallick is a Bangladeshi singer and journalist. She is an exponent of Nazrul Geeti. [1] She is editor of the Arts and Entertainment section of The Daily Star . [2]

Background and career

Mallick was born to Syed Moqsud Ali and Nurun Nahar Faizannesa, both professors of the University of Dhaka. [3] [4] She was a child artiste to perform live when Bangladesh Television was launched 1964. She was one of the early women entrepreneurs in block printing. [4] Mallick accompanied singer Firoza Begum as a performer on a three-month tour of the US in 1990. Begum had also directed Mallick's Nazrul Sangeet album at HMV, India in 1992. [4]

Kazi Nazrul Islam was a Bengali poet, writer, musician, film actor and the national poet of Bangladesh. Popularly known as Nazrul, he produced a large body of poetry and music with themes that included religious devotion and rebellion against oppression. Some of the most notable Nazrul Geeti include Notuner Gaan, the national marching song of Bangladesh and O Mon Romzaner Oi Rozar Sheshe, an Islamic song on the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Abdul Gaffar Choudhury is a Bangladeshi-born British writer, journalist, columnist, political analyst and poet. He wrote the lyrics to "Amar Bhaier Rôkte Rangano", a widely celebrated song commemorating the Bengali Language Movement.

Ferdausi Rahman also known as Ferdausi Begum is a Bangladeshi playback singer. She is the daughter of folk singer Abbas Uddin. She sang some popular film songs for Pakistani films also in the 1960s especially working with the music composer Robin Ghosh in film Chakori released in 1967. She was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1977 and Independence Day Award in 1995 by the Government of Bangladesh.

Nilufar Yasmin was a Bangladeshi singer of Nazrul Sangeet, Rajanikanta Geeti, Dwijendra Geeti and Atul Prasdi genre. She was the fourth of five Yasmin sisters of Bangladesh music. Her siblings are Farida Yasmin, Fauzia Yasmin, Nazma Yasmin, and Sabina Yasmin. She was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2004 by the Government of Bangladesh. She won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her performance in the film Shuvoda (1986).

Bari Siddiqui was a Bangladeshi singer-songwriter and flautist. His songs include Shua Chan Pakhi, Amar Gaye Joto Dukkho Shoy, Pubali Batashe and Manush Dhoro Manush Bhojo.

Notun Kuri is a Bangladeshi reality television competition series for child artistes created by Mustafa Monwar. The show debuted in 1966 which ran on Pakistan Television from 1966 to 1971. After the independence of Bangladesh, the competition was relaunched and ran on Bangladesh Television from 1976 to 2006. The name of the show comes from a poem named "Kishor (Teenager)" by Golam Mostofa.

Nazrul Institute

The Nazrul Institute is Bangladesh's national institute, established in February 1985. Its headquarters are located in Kabi Bhaban in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, Bangladesh. It fulfills a number of roles; promoting the literary work of the poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, recognising excellence in literature research by conferring awards, and public engagement.

Mohammad Rafiquzzaman

Mohammad Rafiquzzaman is a Bangladeshi lyricist. He was awarded Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Lyrics twice for the lyrics of "Tumi Emoni Jaal Petechho Shongshare" in Shuvoda (1986) and "Phuler Bashor Bhanglo Jokhon" in Chandranath (1984). He is credited with 2000 songs, three collections of songs, four collections of poems and three collections of essays on music.

Nazrul Academy is an academic research institution devoted to the study of the national poet of Bangladesh, Kazi Nazrul Islam, and his works including Nazrul Geeti. The academy is located in Moghbazar, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Probal Chowdhury

Probal Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi freedom fighter, playback singer and composer. He rendered several songs from Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra during the Bangladesh Liberation War. After the war, he pursued his solo career in playback.
