Saregama India Ltd. (Saregama refers to the first four notes of the Indian musical scale) is India's oldest music label owned by RP- Sanjiv Goenka Group of companies.The company is listed on the NSE and BSE with its head office located in Kolkata and other offices in Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi. Apart from music, Saregama also produces films under the brand name Yoodlee Films and multi-language Television content.
Saregama owns music repertoire across Film music, Carnatic, Hindustani classical, Devotional etc. in all prominent Indian languages. The first song recorded in India by Gauhar Jaan in 1902 and the first film made in Bollywood ‘Alaam Ara' in 1931 were under the music label. Some of the prominent Indian artists who have produced their music with Saregama are Lata Mangeshkar, M.S. Subbulakshmi, Shamshad Begum, Asha Bhosle, Mohd. Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Jagjit Singh, Pt Bhimsen Joshi, Pt Jasraj, Chamkila, Gurdas Mann etc.
The company has expanded its catalogue to become the largest in-perpetuity global owner of both sound recording and publishing copyrights of Indian music across 14 different languages.
In 1901, the company began operations by recording the first song in India, as the first overseas branch of Electric & Musical Industries Limited, EMI London. [ clarification needed ] It was incorporated in Calcutta (now Kolkata) as The Gramophone and Typewriter Ltd. The following year, Gramophone inventor Emile Berliner's assistant Fred Gaisberg came to India "on a mission to capture [its] music". Gauhar Jaan became the first Indian artist to be recorded there, on 5 January 1902. In 1907, a record factory was started in Dum Dum in Calcutta, the first outside the UK.
On 13 August 1946, it was incorporated as a Private Limited company with the name of ‘The Gramophone Co. (India) Limited'. It was converted into a public company on 28 October 1968 and consequently the name of the company was changed to ‘The Gramophone Company of India Limited'. RPG Group took over the company in 1985 from EMI when the company's financial health was poor. The name of the company was then changed from The Gramophone Company of India Limited to its current name Saregama India Limited on 3 November 2000. In 2005, the remaining EMI stake was sold off to the parent company.
For the first 100 years, the company retailed its products (records, cassettes, CDs) under the brand name HMVwhich was synonymous with film music in India. From 2000 onwards, it started retailing its products under the brand name, Saregama.
Saregama's recording studio, called Dum Dum studio, was built in 1928 in Calcutta. 's voice was also recorded here.The Dum Dum Recording studio was also a house to manufacturing and production of Gramophone Records and thereafter Music Cassettes. With advent of digital formats, the physical formats progressively went out of consumer patronage and consequently, these manufacturing facilities were shut down.It is one of the oldest studios in Southeast Asia. Carvaan is a portable music player with a pre-loaded collection of mainly vintage Bollywood songs. It is an easy to use device and comprises in-built stereo speakers. Since its inception, Saregama has launched multiple variants of Carvaan in different languages like Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Bengali and Marathi.
In 2018, Saregama Carvaan Premium was launched with additional features. There are 52 additional stations (as compared to the base model) and app support is provided for iOS and Android to create playlist and controlling the music system.
In the year 2019, Saregama launched Carvaan 2.O. In addition to the collection of 5000 songs, Wi-Fi connectivity is available which provides access to over 150 audio stations and over 20,000 songs. The content pushed as podcast includes devotional, children rhymes, talk shows, travel, food, health etc.
Carvaan Gold and Carvaan Gold 2.O are the premium versions of Saregama Carvaan which have all the old features of Carvaan along with Wi-Fi connectivity, additional audio stations, Champagne Gold and Rose Gold colours, and harman/kardon sound system.

Carvaan GO is a portable digital audio player with in-built speakers and a pre-loaded collection of 3000 retro Hindi songs of popular singing legends of the yesteryear. The songs are divided into various categories such as Artistes, Specials and Playlists. The personal device has a rechargeable battery with approximately 7-hour playtime. The additional features include Bluetooth, Aux Cable, micro SD, and FM/AM options.
Carvaan Mini is a portable music player with multiple variants of Bhakti, Rabindrasangeet, and Gurbani. Asha Bhosle(néeMangeshkar; born 8 September 1933) is an Indian playback singer and entrepreneur. She is best known for her playback singing in Hindi cinema, although she has a wider repertoire. Bhosle's career started in 1943 and has spanned over seven decades. She has done playback singing for over a thousand movies. In addition, she has recorded several private albums and participated in numerous solo concerts in India and abroad. In 2006, Asha Bhosle stated that she had sung over 12,000 songs, a figure repeated by several other sources. In 2011, she was officially acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most recorded artist in music history. The Government of India honoured her with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. Bhosle is the sister of playback singer Lata Mangeshkar and belongs to the prominent Mangeshkar family.
Kattassery Joseph Yesudas also known as Jesudas is an Indian playback singer and musician who sings Indian classical, devotional and film songs. Yesudas has recorded more than 50,000 songs in various Indian languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, Bengali, Odia, Marathi as well as Arabic, English, Latin, and Russian, in a career spanning six decades. Bimal Roy was an Indian film director. He is particularly noted for his realistic and socialistic films such as Do Bigha Zamin, Parineeta, Biraj Bahu, Devdas, Madhumati, Sujata, Parakh and Bandini, making him an important director of Hindi cinema. Inspired by Italian neo-realistic cinema, he made Do Bigha Zamin after watching Vittorio De Sica's Bicycle Thieves (1948). His work is particularly known for his mise en scène which he employed to portray realism. He won a number of awards throughout his career, including eleven Filmfare Awards, two National Film Awards, and the International Prize of the Cannes Film Festival. Madhumati won 9 Filmfare Awards in 1958, a record held for 37 years.
Kedarnath Bhattacharaya, better known as Kumar Sanu, is an Indian playback singer. He is popularly known as King of melody in bollywood. He is famous for singing thousands of bollywood Hindi song. Apart from Hindi, he has also sang in other languages including Marathi, Nepali, Assamese, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Punjabi, Oriya, Chhattisgarhi, Urdu, Pali, English and his native language Bengali, both in West Bengal and Bangladesh. Sharada, known as Kavita Krishnamurthy or Kavita Subramaniam, is an Indian playback and classical singer. She has recorded more than 50,000 songs in 16 languages including Bengali, Kannada, Hindi, Bhojpuri, Telugu, Odia, Marathi, English, Urdu, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati, Nepali, Assamese, Konkani and other languages. Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki was an Indian vocalist, composer and scholar of Indian classical, semi-classical, and devotional music. Ali Haji is an Indian actor and filmmaker who appears in Bollywood films. He made his breakthrough with Fanaa as Aamir Khan and Kajol's son. He was also seen as Champ in the 2007 film Ta Ra Rum Pum as Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji's son. He appeared in Yoodlee films's Noblemen (2018) directed by Vandana Kataria and Super 30 (2019) directed by Vikas Bahl. He won Best Child Actor award at the New York Indian Film Festival for Noblemen. Ali Haji has written and directed his first feature film called #JusticeForGoodContent. It is currently in post-production. He will be the youngest director to have done so.
Parinay is a 1974 Indian Hindi-language film directed by Kantilal Rathod and produced by Samantar Chitra. The film starred Romesh Sharma and Shabana Azmi, with Asha Sachdev, Dinesh Thakur, Priti Ganguly and T.P. Jain in the supporting cast. Released on 1 January 1974, this film was associated with Saregama. The screenplay was by Rathod and Shukla, whereas the cinematography was by K. K. Mahajan. Jaidev was the music director; Anup Jalota, Manna Dey and Vani Jairam were the singers. The lyricists were Ramanand Sharma and Naqsh Lyallpuri.
Ajji (transl. Granny) is an Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Devashish Makhija. The film stars Sushama Deshpande, Sharvani Suryavanshi, Abhishek Banerjee, Sadiya Siddiqui, Vikas Kumar, Manuj Sharma, Sudhir Pandey, Kiran Khoje, and Smita Tambe in major roles. "Ajji" has been positioned as a dark take on the classic fairy tale, "Red Riding Hood". The film is backed by Yoodlee Films, a production venture of Saregama.The film won the Fresh Blood competition at the Beaune International Thriller Film Festival, France 2018. Sushama Deshpande, who played ‘Ajji’ won The Flame Award at the UK Asian Film Festival and received a special jury mention for her performance in the film at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA). Ajji was officially invited to compete at the 2017 Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) and was showcased in the New Currents section of the 22nd Korean film extravaganza. Ajji was also a part of the Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI) which took place 12–18 October and was played as a part of the India Gold category. Other official selection for festivals include Dharamshala International Film Festival, Singapore International Film Festival and Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. The film was nominated for the Netpac Award at the 2018 Rotterdam International Film Festival. The film was released on 24 November 2017. Ajji is now available on Netflix.
Noblemen is an Indian English language drama film directed by Vandana Kataria. The film stars Kunal Kapoor, Ali Haji, Ivan Rodrigues, Mohommad Ali Mir, Ankit Kukreti, Muskkaan Jaferi, Shaan Groverr, Soni Razdan, Manav Chauhan, Parag Gupta and Abhay Narang in major roles. The story is about a 15-year-old boy, struggling with his adolescent years, who is terrorized by a gang of bullies in a posh boarding school. This sets forth a chain of events that leads to a loss of life and innocence. The film is backed by Yoodlee Films, a production venture of Saregama. The film is a thematic representation of The Merchant of Venice. The official teaser of the film was launched on 25 May 2018 and the film's Asian Premiere followed closely on 26 May at Kashish.
Hamid is an Indian drama film directed by Aijaz Khan. The film stars Rasika Dugal, Vikas Kumar and Talha Arshad Reshi in major roles, and is an adaptation of the play Phone No. 786 by Mohd. Amin Bhat. The story revolves about a seven-year-old Hamid who learns that 786 is God's number and decides to try and reach out to God, by dialing this number. He wants to talk to his father, who his classmate tells him has gone to Allah. One fine day the phone call is answered, and two lives shattered in the strife of Kashmir find a way to be complete again. The film is produced by Yoodlee Films, a venture of Saregama. The official trailer was released on 10 October 2018. Global premiere of Hamid was held at the Jio MAMI 20th Mumbai Film Festival. The film went on to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Urdu at the 66th National Film Awards hosted in August 2019.

The RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, commonly known as RPSG Group, is an Indian industrial and services conglomerate headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal. It was founded by Sanjiv Goenka, the younger son of Rama Prasad Goenka, on 13 July 2011.
