The film revolves around a plot concerning a monster who kidnaps and murders women wearing red bridal attire. Jaani Dushman was released worldwide on 25 May 1979 and received mainly positive reviews from critics. Commercially, it was declared a "Super Hit" at the box office. In 2002, Rajkumar Kohli directed another film with an identical name starring his son, Armaan.

This was one of the four films T. Rama Rao directed with Jeetendra and Rekha that explored married relationships. The film did well commercially. Rekha was applauded for her performance as the other woman.

Himmatwala on release was a giant commercial success, grossing ₹5 crore, becoming one of the highest grossing Hindi films of 1980s. The film proved to be a breakthrough for Sridevi in Bollywood and launched her to stardom. Her dance number "Naino Mein Sapna" became a rage with Rediff stating that "the water pots may have dominated most frames in 'Naino Mein Sapna', but it was Sridevi's bejewelled outfits and headgears that stole the show".
