Sahani Upendra Pal Singh (15 October 1930 - 29 July 2021) was an Indian writer. He was one of the prominent writers in the Nagpuri-language in the modern period. He translated "Ram Charit Manas" in Nagpuri. [1] He wrote around 20 books in nagpuri. He was awarded "Jharkhand Ratna", "Praful Samman", "Seva Ratna" and "BCCL Koyal Bharti Rajbhasha award". He was born in Taragutu village in Gumla District to Birendra Pal Singh and Janak Nandini on 15 October 1930. He was from a Jamindar family. He completed his high school at Gumla High school in 1952. He was not able to pursue higher Studies due to family issues.
He married Chandrabali Devi in 1950. He had two daughters and four sons. [5]
Singh wrote more than 20 books in nagpuri. He translated "Ram Charit Manas" and poems by Kali Das in Nagpuri. [6] His written book "Mewar Keshri" is taught in the Nagpuri B.A honours course. He wrote a book named "Amba Manjar" in 2006 which was about the culture of Jharkhand and India. [7] [8]
He died on 29 July 2021 in his residence, Gokul Nagar, Gumla. [3] [9]
He was awarded the Jharkhand Ratna, Hirak Samman, Praful Samman, Seva Ratna and BCCL Koyal Bharti Rajbhasha award. [2]
Nagpuri is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the Indian states of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. It is primarily spoken in the west and central Chota Nagpur plateau region.

The Nagpuria people, also Nagpuri or Sadan, are an Indo-Aryan speaking ethnolinguistic group who are the native speakers of the Nagpuri language and natives of the western Chota Nagpur Plateau region of Indian states of Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
Lal Ranvijay Nath Shahdeo, was a lawyer, poet, writer and political activist. He was a prominent leader of the movement for a separate Jharkhand state. He was president of the Jharkhand Party. He wrote several Nagpuri poems, songs and slogans for the Jharkhand movement. At the end, the Central government of India accepted to form a new state, Jharkhand. He changed the state name Vananchal to Jharkhand after a debate with Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was the recipient of the Jharkhand Ratna Award for his contribution to the movement for a separate state of Jharkhand.

Govind Sharan Lohra was an Indian folk artist. He was a Nagpuri folk singer, songwriter and dancer. He had performed in many national events. He was recipient of several awards including Akruti Samman, Peter Naurangi Sahitya Samman and Jharkhand Bibhuti. He was awarded Jaishankar Prasad Smriti Award in 2021.
Sarhul is a spring festival in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is a symbol of commencement of the new year. The festival is celebrated for three days, from the 3rd day of Chaitra month in Sukla Paksh to Chaitra Purnima. In the festival, the village priest Pahan offers sacrifice of flowers, fruit, vermilion, rooster and tapan (liquor) in Sarna to Sun, village deity and ancestor for good fortune of the village. Then the locals dance holding flowers of the sal tree. According to the tradition, it also symbolises marriage between the Earth and the Sun. It is an important festival observed by the Kurukh and Sadan. Among Kurukh it is known as Khaddi in Kurukh.

Although in the present century, Nagpuri was never considered worthy of literary development. But some dedicated writers have engaged in writing short stories, plays and poetry.

Praful Kumar Roy was an Indian writer. He was one of the prominent writers of the Nagpuri-language in the modern period. He had a prominent role in publication in the Nagpuri language and in the formation of Nagpuri Bhasha Parishad in 1960.

He is known for the Nagpuri film Sun Sajna, Deva Rikshawala and Gangwa. Lohra is a community found in Jharkhand. They are traditionally associated with works of iron smelting.
Mahavir Nayak, is a nagpuri singer and songwriter. He is an exponent of Theth Nagpuri music, which is a genre of typical Nagpuri music, based on traditional Nagpuri folk music. He is the recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Award (2022), Lok Kala Ratna Award (2014) and Praful Samman (2019) for his contribution in folk music. In 2025, he was awarded Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award in the field of arts.
