He played college basketball at Saint Mary's College of California. In 2011, he was named West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year. McConnell was drafted in 31st round of the 2011 MLB First Year Player Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It was home to the Saint Mary's Gaels college baseball team of the NCAA Division I West Coast Conference from 1928 to 2011. Named for former Gaels baseball player and coach Louis Guisto, the field has a capacity of 1,000 spectators. Before being named for Guisto, the field was known as Brother Agon Field.

Opened in 2012, the venue replaced the old Louis Guisto Field as the home of Saint Mary's baseball. Like the old facility, it is named for former Saint Mary's baseball player and coach Louis Guisto. The field opened on February 17, 2012, when Saint Mary's defeated Southern Utah 2–1 in front of 1,100 fans. Former Major League pitcher Tom Candiotti threw out the honorary first pitch.

He played college baseball at Arizona State in 1997 before transferring to Pepperdine where he played from 1999 to 2001. He then served as the head coach of the Saint Mary's from 2014 until 2019 and at Long Beach State between 2019 and 2023.

They were one of the last four teams not selected for the NCAA tournament and as a result earned a No. 1 seed in the National Invitation Tournament where they defeated Southeastern Louisiana in the first round and Washington in the second round before losing to Utah in the quarterfinals.

Therefore, they received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and they lost in the first round to Villanova.

Despite being a virtual lock to receive an at-large bid to NCAA tournament, all postseason play was cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tommy Kuhse is an American professional basketball player for Derthona Basket of the Italian Lega Basket Serie A (LBA). He played five seasons of college basketball at Saint Mary's before going undrafted in the 2022 NBA draft.
