Saint Mary of the Snows is a Catholic church that is located at 1630 Ashland Road in Mansfield, Ohio.
Established on August 5, 1949, the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows, the parish was founded to accommodate the growing Catholic population in the Mansfield area. [1] The original Newman School, built in 1914 and abandoned since 1948, was purchased for $35,000 on the same date.
After the purchase, the school building was converted for church use, with the first Masses held on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1950.
The Newman Street location was always intended as a temporary solution. On November 9, 1961, the current St. Mary’s property was acquired, and eight years later, on August 5, 1969—20 years after the parish’s founding—the new school opened. Masses continued at the Newman Street site until November 1, 1971, when the property was sold at auction.
A decade later, with parish debt cleared, plans for a new church were finalized on May 20, 1981. The construction contract totaled $962,253, and the new church was formally dedicated on June 20, 1982. [2]
After 35 years of service, the Sisters of Mercy left the parish and school due to declining vocations and enrollment. [3]
