The university operates four schools: [4]

In addition, it has specialized institutes including the Institute for Ethics, Democracy, and Human Rights (IEDHR), which operates under the SAEH; the Institute for Sustainable Development & Entrepreneurship (ISDE), which operates under the SBPP; and the Institute of Biodiversity and Non-profit Studies (IBiNS), which operates under the SSET and in collaboration with the training and capacity building division of the Environment and Rural Development Foundation (ERUDEF).[ citation needed ]

History

The roots of the university go back to 2001, when a group of American intellectuals originally from Cameroon decided to start a US-style university in Cameroon. In 2009, the Professional Training Center (PTC) went operational in Bamenda, Cameroon, approved by the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training. It provided training in sustainable energy, especially solar energy. In 2012, Saint Monica University replaced the PTC, with the incorporation of the university in Hawaii in the United States as a non-profit institution offering Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral programs.

In the same year (2012), Saint Monica University began seeking authorization to operate in Cameroon and was granted permission, where it operates under the name, Saint Monica University (SMU) Higher Institute.

In a bid to expand into the United Kingdom, SMU established partnership with the Academy for International Science and Research (AISR) in Derry, Northern Ireland, which now serves as SMU's UK campus. Similarly, AISR now offers its programs in Cameroon at the SMU campus in Bulu, Buea.

The SMU ground or permanent campus in Cameroon is located in the Bulu neighborhood in Buea, the campus has been christened "Civitas Dei," Latin for "The City of God." [5]

Accreditation

Saint Monica University (SMU) is accredited by the United Kingdom-based Accreditation Service for International Colleges. [6]

Saint Monica University is accredited in the National Commission on Private Higher Education at the Minister of Higher Education, Yaounde, Cameroon. SMU has, therefore, met all the requirements to function as a de facto institution of higher education in Cameroon. [7]

The Art Institutes are a collection of for-profit art schools that are owned by Education Principle Foundation and the remnants of two failed parent companies: for-profit college operator Education Management Corporation (EDMC) and Dream Center Education Holdings (DCEH). The Art Institutes offer several programs at the associate's, bachelors, and master's levels, as well as other programs for non-degree seeking students. At its height, The Art Institutes, as a for-profit college entity, had more than 50 campuses. However, as the for-profit education sector came under scrutiny, many campuses saw a marked decrease in enrollment. At least 35 schools closed in 2017–18, and some were sold, leaving about a dozen schools under two separate owners. The Art Institutes have also faced accreditation issues, which has led to lawsuits from former students.

Education in Cameroon

Cameroon is a Central African nation on the Gulf of Guinea. Bantu speakers were among the first groups to settle Cameroon, followed by the Muslim Fulani until German domination in 1884. After World War I, the French took over 80% of the area, and the British 20%. After World War II, self-government was granted, and in 1972, a unitary republic was formed out of East and West Cameroon. Until 1976 there were two separate education systems, French and English, which did not merge seamlessly. French is now considered the primary language of instruction. Local languages are generally not taught as there are too many, and choosing between them would raise further issues.
