Sajil Sreedhar is an Indian author and journalist. He writes in Malayalam. Athikayan, his biography of K. P. Paul, won the S. K. Pottekkatt award in 2016. [1] . He has published thirty-five books in literary genres including short stories, novels, literary criticism, film criticism, and biography. He is a recipient of the Malayattoor award for his debut novel Vasavadatha.

Career

He has written the biographies of Indian personalities including M. T. Vasudevan Nair, P. S. Sreenivasan, Vellappally Natesan, Kochouseph Chittilappally, Thilakan, K.P. Paul, and G. P. C. Nair.

His first novel Vasavadatha interpreted the evolution of a person from materialistic desire to spiritual insight and is considered one of his best. The novel won the Malayattoor Award. Vasavadatha has been translated into English.

He then published Sarvajnapeedom, which narrates the life of Buddhist saints Upagupthan and Utharas. His novel Aathmasourabham was based on the life of Kerala Renaissance Leader Dr. Palppu. He wrote two novels based on the Hindu epic, Santha and Paramapadam. Santha interprets the life of Sreeraman's elder sister Santha. Paramapadam narrates the story of King Pareekshith. He wrote a historical novel Avarnnan based on the life of Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker. His short story "E M S Nte Kathrika" narrates the relationship between a legendary leader and an ordinary worker. He wrote and directed the first historical television series in Kerala, Paliyathachan. As part of the Kerala government's action plan of one hundred days, he interviewed eminent personalities and published the interviews in book form.

He wrote an in-depth critical study of the films of Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Another major work was Thirakkathayude Sancharavazhikal, which analysed the aesthetics of Malayalam screenplays. Srushtiparathayude Ananya Saubhagam was a study of Malayalam novels.

He served as a jury member of Kerala state film awards in 2013. He worked as editor of Mangalam Weekly , one of India's most circulated publications.

He won the first M. K. Sanu Literary award for Best Biography in 2015.

<i>Kilukkam</i> 1991 Indian film

Kilukkam (transl. Jingle) is a 1991 Indian Malayalam-language comedy drama film directed by Priyadarshan and written by Venu Nagavalli. The story set in Ooty revolves around tourist guide Joji (Mohanlal) and photographer Nishchal. They happen to meet a lavish tourist Nandini (Revathi), whom they bet their fortunes on. It also stars Thilakan, Innocent, K. B. Ganesh Kumar, Sukumari, and Sharat Saxena, with Murali and Jagadish making cameo appearances. The music was composed by S. P. Venkatesh. Kilukkam was released on 15 August 1991. The film was the highest-grossing Malayalam film at that time and ran for more than 365-days at the theaters. Kilukkam won five Kerala State Film Awards, including Best Actor for Mohanlal, Second Best Actor for Jagathy Sreekumar, Best Editor for N. Gopalakrishnan, and Best Cinematographer for S. Kumar. The film is regarded as one of the best comedy films of Malayalam cinema. It was remade in Telugu as Allari Pilla and in Hindi as Muskurahat by Priyadarshan himself. Later, the film had a sequel Kilukkam Kilukilukkam (2006). The movie was reported to have been inspired by the 1953 American movie Roman Holiday.

Vallathol Narayana Menon was a Malayalam poet and one of the triumvirate of modern Malayalam poetry, along with Asan and Ulloor. The honorific Mahakavi was applied to him in 1913 after the publication of his MahakavyaChitrayogam. He was a nationalist poet and wrote a series of poems on various aspects of the Indian freedom movement. He founded the Kerala Kalamandalam and is credited with revitalising the traditional Keralite dance form known as Kathakali.

Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai, popularly known as Thakazhi after his place of birth, was an Indian novelist and short story writer of Malayalam literature. He wrote over 30 novels and novellas and over 600 short stories focusing on the lives of the oppressed classes. Known for his works such as Kayar and Chemmeen, Pillai was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, the third highest Indian civilian award. He was also a recipient of the Jnanpith, India's highest literary award, awarded in 1984 for the novel Kayar.

The film, starring Mammootty and M. R. Gopakumar, explores the master-slave relationship in a South Karnataka setting.

Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker, also known as Kallisseril Velayudha Perumal, was a 19th-century social reformer and warrior, known for his fight against many social evils prevalent in the state of Kerala. He was born into an affluent Ezhava family known as Kallisseril, in the small independent province called Mangalam, near Haripad in Alappuzha district.

Yathra is a 1985 Indian Malayalam-language romantic drama film written and directed by Balu Mahendra. The film stars Mammootty and Shobana, while Adoor Bhasi, Thilakan and Alummoodan play supporting roles. The film tells a fictional story but is built upon the human rights violations by the police and the prison authorities in India during the emergency of 1975–1977, when the fundamental rights of the citizens were suspended. Kilichundan Mampazham is a 2003 Indian Malayalam-language romantic comedy film written and directed by Priyadarshan from a story by Sreenivasan. It was produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the company Aashirvad Cinemas. The film stars Mohanlal, Soundarya, Sreenivasan and Salim Kumar. Vineeth Sreenivasan debuted as a singer in the film.

N. P. Mohammed, popularly known by his initials N. P., was an Indian novelist, short story writer and screenwriter of Malayalam language. Along with his contemporaries like M. T. Vasudevan Nair, O. V. Vijayan, Kakkanadan, and Madhavikutty, he was known to have been one of the pioneers of modernist movement in Malayalam fiction. He was the president of Kerala Sahitya Akademi and a recipient of several awards including Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Story, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Novel, Lalithambika Antharjanam Award, Padmaprabha Literary Award and the Muttathu Varkey Award.

Chemparathy (transl. Hibiscus) is a 1972 Malayalam-language film directed by P. N. Menon and written by Malayattoor Ramakrishnan. It was produced by S. K. Nair, a famous literary personality and the founder of Malayalanadu weekly. It stars Madhu along with newcomers Roja Ramani, Raghavan and Sudheer in major roles. The film was an adaptation of Malayattoor's short story Lodge. Noted filmmaker Bharathan made his cinematic debut as an art director in the film.

Padatha Painkili is a 1957 Indian Malayalam-language drama film based on the novel of the same name by Muttathu Varkey and directed by P. Subramaniam from a screenplay by Varkey. The film revolves around marriage and dowry problems. It depicts the machinations of a wicked, though wealthy man, against a poverty-stricken, God-fearing school master, with the final defeat of evil in the end.
