About

Sakhigopal is one of the pilgrimage centres in Odisha for the Sakhigopal Temple. The name Sakhigopal literally means Gopal (Srikrishna) being a witness. [1]

The alternate name for this place is Satyabadi as it was the name of this place before the establishment of Sakhigopal Temple. [2]

Earlier, Sakhigopal village was under Satyabadi Block which was spread over an area of 282.34 km2. It has 169 inhabited villages, 4 uninhabited villages. [3] [ better source needed ]

On 13 March 2024, the Government of Odisha upgraded Sakhigopal village to be a NAC. [4]

Demographics

According to the 2011 Census, Satyabadi had a population of 1,96,136 with the male population being 99,599 (50.8%) while female population being 96,537 (49.2%). There are a total of 43,350 households. The population density is 695 people per km2. [3] [ better source needed ]

Hindus form the majority of the population, while Muslims and Christians are a small minority. The population of Hindus is 1,93,921 (98.9%), Muslims is 1,974 (1%) and Christians is 51 (0.02%). [5] [ better source needed ]

Sakhigopal is a part of Satyabadi Assembly Constituency. Current MLA from Satyabadi Assembly Constituency is Umakanta Samantaray of BJD, who won the seat in State elections in 2019. [11]

Satyabadi is a part of Puri Lok Sabha constituency. [12]

<i>The Samaja</i>

The Samaja is an Odia daily newspaper published in Cuttack, Odisha, India; started in 1919, it is one of the oldest papers in India. Gopabandhu Das, a prominent freedom fighter and social worker started it as a weekly from Satyabadi in Puri district of Odisha to facilitate the freedom struggle and to revive the moribund Odia language. Under his leadership, and with the support of local people, the paper grew into prominence. In 1928, just before the death of Das, the paper was handed over to Lok Sevak Mandal, a non-profit organization started by freedom-fighter Lala Lajapatrai. The society still runs the paper.

He composed a translation of the Bhagavad Gita in Odia and children's grammar book in Odia language.
