- IoT - Internet of Things: Conceptual designs, architectures and implementation of software systems for IoT in industry "Industrial Internet"
- MOWI - Mobile and Web-based Information Technologies: Real-time localisation, interactive geo-web applications, location-based web and mobile services, spatio-temporal data analyses of motion data
- iLab - Innovation Lab: Identification and assessment of customer needs, innovation signals in online communities, business model analysis, systematic idea generation and selection (early stages of innovation), network innovation, scenario building, benchmarking, policy evaluation.
In addition to the core competencies of the individual research groups, Salzburg Research works in the following interdisciplinary research topics: e-Health, e-Tourism, e-Energy, and Industrial Internet.
Salzburg Research is involved in several international R&D projects funded by the EU Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development and many national research projects - some examples:
- CONFIDENCE [1] [2] develops a community-based mobility safeguarding assistance service for people with mild to moderate dementia. Confidence combines "assistive technologies" with "personal help". The project was awarded the international AAL Awards (jury and public award) in 2014. [3] [4] [5] [6]
- IDIRA [7] develops a system of technologies and guidelines for optimal resource planning and operations across national and organisational borders in case of disasters. [8] [9]
- Instandhaltung 4.0 (Maintenance 4.0): The exploratory project addresses the impact of R&D work currently described by the terms Industrial Internet or Industry 4.0, on maintenance and asset management. [10] [11] [12] [13]
- FCD Modellregion Salzburg: [14] Model region for coverage of traffic conditions with the Floating Car Data (FCD) approach. [15] The live volume of traffic for the State of Salzburg is updated every minute. [16] The Android App: Google play: Verkehr in Salzburg [17]
- IKS [18] develops an open source stack for knowledge management, broadens the reach of semantic CMS technology and serves as a collaboration and software development hub for the semantic CMS community; The open-source software Apache Marmotta and Apache Stanbol emerged from this research project.
- iCardea [19] developed an intelligent platform to automate and personalise the follow-up of the cardiac patients with implantable devices.
Furthermore, Salzburg Research co-ordinated the Competence Centers Salzburg NewMediaLab (SNML) [20] (2000-2013) in the area of New Media, ANET (2006-2009) and e-motion [21] (2009-2011) in the field of e-Tourism and since November 2018 the COMET-Project Digital-Motion (DiMo) [22] in Sports, Fitness and Well-being (2018-2022).
Christoph Meinel is a German computer scientist and professor of Internet technologies and systems at the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering (HPI) of the University of Potsdam. He is the scientific director and CEO of the HPI and has developed the openHPI learning platform with more than 1 million enrolled learners. In 2019, he was appointed to the New Internet IPv6 Hall of Fame.
The University of Technology of Troyes is a French university, in the Academy of Reims. The UTT is part of the network of the three universities of technology, found by the University of Technology of Compiègne. Inspired by the American University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, these three universities are a French mixture between the universities of this country and its schools of engineers .UTT is ranked in the top 10 engineering schools 2017 in France by Usine Nouvelle.
The Studio Smart Agent Technologies (SAT) is part of the Research Studios Austria ForschungsgesmbH, a non-profit research organization. It aims to facilitate the transfer of academic research into commercial applications thus implementing an innovation pipeline from universities into markets. To this end, SAT cooperates with both, universities and other academic institutions, as well as innovative companies.
The Research Studios Austria Forschungsgesellschaft mbH is a non-profit research institution in the area of eTechnologies and Smart Media. It operates a network of currently five research units called Studios cooperating with and creating research synergies among universities in Vienna, Linz, Salzburg and Innsbruck.
Peter A. Bruck is CEO and Chief Researcher of the Research Studios Austria Forschungsgesellschaft mbH and founder of the spin-off KnowledgeFox. Juliana Rotich is a Kenyan information technology professional, who has developed web tools for crowdsourcing crisis information and coverage of topics related to the environment. She is the co-founder of iHub, a collective tech space in Nairobi, Kenya, and of Ushahidi, open-source software for collecting and mapping information. She is a TED Senior Fellow.

Viktor Mayer-Schönberger is Professor of Internet Governance and Regulation at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford. He conducts research into the network economy. Earlier he spent ten years on the faculty of Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is the co-author of Big Data: A Revolution That Will Transform How We Live, Work, and Think and author of Delete: The Virtue of Forgetting in the Digital Age, which won the 2010 Marshall McLuhan Award for Outstanding Book and the 2010 Don K. Price Award for Best Book in Science and Technology Politics, and has written over a hundred articles and book chapters. He is a member of Germany's Digital Council, advising Angela Merkel and her cabinet.
Apache Stanbol is an open source modular software stack and reusable set of components for semantic content management. Apache Stanbol components are meant to be accessed over RESTful interfaces to provide semantic services for content management. Thus, one application is to extend traditional content management systems with semantic services.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution, 4IR, or Industry 4.0, conceptualizes rapid change to technology, industries, and societal patterns and processes in the 21st century due to increasing interconnectivity and smart automation. The term has been used widely in scientific literature, and in 2015 was popularized by Klaus Schwab, the World Economic Forum Founder and Executive Chairman. Schwab asserts that the changes seen are more than just improvements to efficiency, but express a significant shift in industrial capitalism.

Apache Marmotta is a linked data platform that comprises several components. In its most basic configuration it is a Linked Data server. Marmotta is one of the reference projects early implementing the new Linked Data Platform recommendation that is being developed by W3C.

pmdtechnologies ag is a developer of CMOS semiconductor 3D time-of-flight (ToF) components and a provider of engineering support in the field of digital 3D imaging. The company is named after the Photonic Mixer Device (PMD) technology used in its products to detect 3D data in real time. The corporate headquarters of the company is located in Siegen, Germany.
SwellRT is a free and open-source backend-as-a-service and API focused to ease development of apps featuring real-time collaboration. It supports the building of mobile and web apps, and aims to facilitate interoperability and federation.
The Conference of European Directors of Roads (CEDR) or Conférence Européenne des Directeurs des Routes was created in 2003 from the former Western European Road Directors (WERD). It is a non-profit organisation established as a platform for the Directors of National Road Authorities. Having a European focus, CEDR complements the work of the World Road Association PIARC and other regional associations of road authorities. CEDR's activities are carried out in an open and transparent way in accordance with CEDR's own code of conduct and the code of conduct of the EU institutions. CEDR's is listed in the EU Transparency Register, 485630615462-79.
WordLift is a start-up founded in 2017 and based in Rome, Italy. The company developed the WordPress plugin of the same name, which, through the use of semantic technologies and artificial intelligence, optimises the writing and organisation of content and the findability of websites.

FeGiS is a road traffic safety research project for the early identification of danger points in road traffic and for the prevention of traffic accidents in Germany. The project was launched in December 2017 and is funded by the "mFund" of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure already in the second funding stage, thanks to the successful completion of the FeGiS feasibility study in 2018.
