Sam Cunningham is an American politician who was elected as the first African-American mayor of Waukegan,Illinois,the largest city in and the county seat of Lake County,Illinois. Sam Cunningham left office in 2021,after being defeated by then-alderwoman Ann B. Taylor.
Cunningham was born and raised in Waukegan. [2] [3] He is a graduate of Waukegan East High School and Central State University where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration and Marketing. [2] After college,he established his own business as an insurance agent. [2] In 1975,he joined the Waukegan Police Department as an officer. [4] In 1999,he was elected as alderman for the 1st Ward in Waukegan. [3] In 2017,he defeated independent Lisa May, [4] who at the time would have been the city's first female mayor. [3] He was the first African-American to serve as mayor in Waukegan. [3]
Cunningham proposed the development of a casino on the vacant land that used to house Lakehurst Mall. In 2019,with the signing of the Rebuild Illinois Act by governor J. B. Pritzker,six new casinos were to be constructed,including one in Waukegan. [5] [6] As of 2021,no operator has been chosen to construct and manage the proposed casino site. [7]
Another vision he had for the city was the transformation of the lake-front to a "northern Navy Pier" of Lake County. This vision included the establishment of recreational,commercial,and residential areas along the abandoned industrial areas of the shore. [7] Critics of this objected to it,as they claimed that the city did not have sufficient funds to accomplish this goal. [8]
During the month of April 2019,Sam Cunningham and his mother,Lake County Board vice-chair Mary Ross Cunningham,were sued for allegedly violating the First Amendment rights of a Waukegan resident. The mayor allegedly threatened to revoke the resident's public housing voucher and potentially arrest the resident if he did not remove an altered image that depicted the two as devils. [9] [10] The lawsuit reached a settlement of $17,000,with the county paying $12,000 and the city paying $5,000. [11]
As part of his re-election efforts,he faced criticism over accusations of political intimidation of an alderman for having a political campaign sign on his front lawn for an opposing candidate. [12] He lost the election to alderwoman Ann B. Taylor,by a margin of 11%. [13]
Cunningham has two daughters,Syerra and Samantha. [2] Cunningham is a 2017 Jim Edgar Fellow,the U.S. Minority Contractors Association 2017 Municipal Administrator of the Year,and the recipient of the Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce Parren J. Mitchell Outstanding Service Award. [2] He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. [2]

Lori Elaine Lightfoot is an American attorney and politician serving since 2019 as the 56th mayor of Chicago. She is a member of the Democratic Party. The 2019 Chicago aldermanic election took place in two rounds on February 26 and April 2,2019,to elect 50 aldermen to the Chicago City Council. Each alderman represents one of Chicago's 50 wards. The elections are non-partisan and use a two-round system where the top two finishers compete in a second-round run-off if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the first round. The elections were party of the 2019 Chicago elections,which included elections for Mayor,City Clerk,City Treasurer.
Maria Elaine Hadden is an American politician and community activist from Chicago. She is a member of the Chicago city council,serving as alderman for the city's 49th ward. She won election to that office after defeating 28-year incumbent Joe Moore in the 2019 aldermanic elections. The 49th ward includes most of Rogers Park and portions of West Ridge. While Hadden is affiliated with the Democratic Party,she has said she would be an independent alderman. She is a member of the Progressive Caucus,Black Caucus,and LGBT Caucus in the city council.

Robert Shaw was an American politician. He served as a City of Chicago Alderman in the 9th ward for two terms,first in 1979 through 1983 and again from 1987 until 1998. Shaw also served as commissioner on the Cook County Board of Review from 1998 until 2004.
