The county is primarily suburban,with some urban areas and some rural areas. Due to its location,immediately north of Cook County,Lake County is one of the collar counties of the Chicago metropolitan area. Its northern boundary is the Wisconsin state line.

From 1967 to 1973,an extended period of racial unrest occurred in the town of Cairo,Illinois. The city had long had racial tensions which boiled over after a black soldier was found hanged in his jail cell. Over the next several years,fire bombings,racially charged boycotts and shootouts were common place in Cairo,with 170 nights of gunfire reported in 1969 alone.
Jereme Richmond is an American professional basketball player for Obras Sanitarias of the Liga Nacional de Básquet. Richmond was considered a top 25 recruit and #4 at his position in the 2010 class. He played college basketball for the University of Illinois. In November 2013,Richmond was sentenced to serve three years in prison. Earlier in 2013 he was convicted of harassment of a witness for making threatening comments and gestures to a probation officer.

Lori Elaine Lightfoot is an American politician and attorney who was the 56th mayor of Chicago from 2019 until 2023. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Before becoming mayor,Lightfoot worked in private legal practice as a partner at Mayer Brown and held various government positions in Chicago. She served as president of the Chicago Police Board and chair of the Chicago Police Accountability Task Force. In 2019,Lightfoot defeated Toni Preckwinkle in a runoff election for Chicago mayor. She ran again in 2023 but failed to qualify for the runoff,becoming the city's first incumbent mayor to not be reelected since Jane Byrne in 1983.
Marcellis Stinnette,a 19-year-old Black man,was fatally shot by police officer Dante Salinas in Waukegan,Illinois,United States shortly before midnight on October 20,2020. He was the passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by police,who were attempting to arrest him on an outstanding warrant. According to police,the officer opened fire when the vehicle moved in reverse towards the officer. The driver,Tafarra Willams,was also wounded but survived. The officer has been fired,and another officer has been placed on administrative leave. Body camera,dashboard camera,and surveillance video of the incident has been publicly released,and the Illinois State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation have opened investigations. Demonstrations were held in Waukegan in the ensuing days.
