Sam Kuhn (born February 7, 1989) is an American director, screenwriter and photographer. He has directed multiple short films, as well as several acclaimed music videos for bands such as Norah Jones., [1] [2] Here We Go Magic [3] and Okay Kaya. [4]

Biography

Kuhn graduated from Willamette University [5] in 2012 where he studied Humanities and creative writing.

Works

Kuhn's directorial debut was the 2012 feature documentary Finding Truelove, which screened at the 2012 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. [6] Programmer Angie Driscoll [7] referred to the film as "The documentary equivalent of a John Hughes movie, Finding Truelove is an exuberant comedy that pays homage to all things '80s [...] with pure energy and heart."

His follow up In Search of the Miraculous premiered at the 2015 Slamdance Film Festival, [8] played Festival du Nouveau Cinema, [9] Maryland Film Festival, [10] and was featured online by Filmmaker Magazine. [11]

In January 2016 the Northwest Film Center honored Kuhn and his collaborators' past work with a collective screening of all films to date. [12]

Kuhn's most recent short Möbius was the only American film to premiere in competition at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival as part of Critics' Week. [13] [14] It was described by staff writer Thomas Fouet as "a mastered teen-movie.". [15] Indiewire compared the film to the work of David Lynch, in that it "blends sweeping shots of the Northwestern terrain with the creeping sense that not all is what it seems". [16] Vice Magazine billed Möbius as a "Gothic Teen Romance... Sparkling with death and magic." [17] During the film's premiere, Kuhn published a diary of the experience for Filmmaker Magazine tracking a strange encounter he had with an Obsidian stone gifted outside Lynch's suite. [18] It was consequentially acquired by the Criterion Collection [19] and honored as part of the MoMA's New Directors/New Films Festival [20]

Elissa Mielke is a Canadian singer/songwriter, actress, and commercial/fashion model. Mielke worked as a fit model in Japan and has modeled for companies like Patagonia and is best known for starring in The Weeknd's "The Zone" music video featuring Canadian rapper Drake. She acted in Lion Attack's short film Mobius, which was chosen for the Critics' Week section at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. She released her first EP in 2015 under the pseudonym "Mieke." In 2021, Mielke released her second EP, "Finally" on Mom+Pop/Slashie labels under her full name. In 2022, Mielke released the single "Paper Moth Flame."

<i>The Tesla World Light</i> 2017 Canadian film

The Tesla World Light is an 8-minute 2017 black and white avant-garde film by Montreal director Matthew Rankin imagining the latter days of inventor Nikola Tesla in 1905 in New York City. Rankin has stated that he was interested in exploring Tesla's optimistic utopian vision. The film is a fanciful amalgamation of elements from Tesla's life including his 1905 pleadings for J.P. Morgan to continue funding his World Wireless System and his love for a pigeon. Rankin has stated that "everything in the film is drawn from something [Tesla] wrote or said." The film uses excerpts of Tesla's actual letters to Morgan, which the filmmaker found in the Library of Congress; even a reference to Tesla falling in love with an "electric pigeon" was based on an interview with Tesla, according to Rankin. The film is produced by Julie Roy for the National Film Board of Canada.

Juliana Rojas is a Brazilian filmmaker who was born in Campinas, São Paulo. She graduated in Cinema in Escola de Comunicação e Artes da USP where she met fellow Brazilian filmmaker Marco Dutra. This was the beginning of a long partnership between them. In 2004, while still in school, they codirected a short film called Lenço Branco. Their short film was part of a section of the Cannes Film Festival that is dedicated to university films, Cinéfondation. Three years later, in 2007, Um Ramo, another short film directed by Rojas and Dutra, would be nominated to Semaine de la Critique of Cannes Film Festival. In 2011, her first feature film would be premiered in the Festival, in the "Un Certain Regard" section. Her film, Good Manners was nominated in 2017 at the Locarno Film Festival. She has also worked as an editor.

Carlo Francisco Manatad is a Filipino filmmaker and editor. He is one of the most prolific editors in the Philippines and has edited the films Ruined Heart (2014), A Gentle Night (2017), Balangiga (2017) and Women of the Weeping River (2018) to name a few. As a director, his films have screened in a number of international film festivals, such as in Locarno, Toronto, Busan, and Cannes.

Scale is a 2022 French animated short film directed by Joseph Pierce. The film debuted at the 2022 Critics Week at Cannes Film Festival and was produced by Melocoton Films (France), in co-production with Bridge Way Films (UK), Endorfilm and Ozù Productions (Belgium). Scale has received several nominations and awards, including a nomination for Best British Short Film at the 2022 British Independent Film Awards and winning the Golden Zagreb Award at the 2023 Zagreb World Festival of Animated Films. In August 2022, the film won the Oscar-qualifying award for Best Animation at HollyShorts Film Festival, and became eligible for the 96th Academy Awards. The film is also in the official selection for the 2024 César Awards.
