Sam Mangel (born February 25, 1963) is an American businessman who consults for incarcerated individuals. [1] He served 20 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud. [2] [3] Upon release, Mangel began advising defendants, such as Steve Bannon, Sam Bankman-Fried, and Peter Navarro, on navigating the U.S. prison system. [4] [5] [6] [7] He is also a CNN contributor on the topics of federal incarceration and white-collar crime. [8]

Conviction

Mangel was indicted in 2011 for wire fraud and illegal insurance business practices in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Through his company Rumson Capital Inc., located in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, Mangel operated a life insurance policy brokerage that facilitated the sale of existing life insurance policies to life settlement providers. His charges related to falsifying and forging life insurance policy disclosure documents in Pennsylvania. [9] [10] He faced a statutory maximum of 85 years in prison but only served 20 months. [11]

Post-prison career

After his 2020 release from prison, Mangel established a prison consulting practice using his familiarity with prison to secure his clients their desired prison jobs, get into programs that will reduce their sentences, and other tasks. [12] [13] His clients have included Steve Bannon, Sam Bankman-Fried, Peter Navarro, British businessman David Price, [14] and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao. [15] [16]

Because of his work, Mangel is frequently consulted by media when high-profile arrests or charges, such as those of Sean Combs, Hunter Biden, Luigi Mangione, Caroline Ellison, Scott Maddox, and Donald Trump, are made. [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22]

Personal life

Mangel was born on February 25, 1963 and raised in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. He graduated from University of Pennsylvania in 1985. He was married in 1989 and has one son and one daughter. [23] Mangel participates in competitive cycling, including in the 2009 Maccabiah Games. [24] Mangel is a hobby pickleball player. [25]

After Democratic nominee Joe Biden won the 2020 United States presidential election, Republican nominee and then-incumbent president Donald Trump pursued an unprecedented effort to overturn the election, with support from his campaign, proxies, political allies, and many of his supporters. These efforts culminated in the January 6 Capitol attack by Trump supporters in an attempted self-coup d'état. Trump and his allies used the "big lie" propaganda technique to promote claims that had been proven false and conspiracy theories asserting the election was stolen by means of rigged voting machines, electoral fraud and an international conspiracy. Trump pressed Department of Justice leaders to challenge the results and publicly state the election was corrupt. Three days after Donald Trump announced his campaign for the 2024 United States presidential election, a special counsel investigation was opened by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland on November 18, 2022, to continue two investigations initiated by the Justice Department (DOJ) regarding former U.S. President Donald Trump. Before co-founding FTX, Wang worked at Google Flights, building systems for the aggregation of ticket prices.

Matthew Evan Corcoran is an American former federal prosecutor who became a white-collar crime defense attorney, and who gained prominence due to his role in the FBI investigation into Donald Trump's handling of government documents as Donald Trump's attorney.

United States of America v. Samuel Bankman-Fried was a 2023 federal criminal trial in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Financial entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried, commonly known as SBF, was convicted on seven charges of fraud and conspiracy following the collapse of his cryptocurrency exchange FTX in November 2022. After the jury's verdict in November 2023, on March 28, 2024, Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison.
