Politico, known originally as The Politico, is an American political journalism company based in Arlington County, Virginia, that covers politics and policy in the United States and internationally. It distributes content through its website, television, printed newspapers, radio, and podcasts. Its coverage in Washington, D.C., includes the U.S. Congress, lobbying, the media and the presidency. Political journalism is a broad branch of journalism that includes coverage of all aspects of politics and political science, although the term usually refers specifically to coverage of civil governments and political power.

Arlington County, Virginia County in the United States

Arlington County is a county in the Commonwealth of Virginia, often referred to simply as Arlington or Arlington, Virginia. The county is situated in Northern Virginia on the southwestern bank of the Potomac River directly across from the District of Columbia, of which it was once a part. The county is coterminous with the U.S. Census Bureau's census-designated place of Arlington. Arlington is considered to be the second-largest "principal city" of the Washington metropolitan area.

History

Origins, style, and growth

John F. Harris and Jim VandeHei left The Washington Post to become Politico's editor-in-chief and executive editor, respectively. With the financial backing of Robert L. Allbritton, the pair launched the website on January 23, 2007. [5] [6] Their first hire was Mike Allen, a writer for Time , [7] and Frederick J. Ryan Jr. served as its first president and chief executive officer. [8]

John F. Harris is an American political journalist and the co-founder of Politico, an Arlington, Virginia-based political news organization. With former Politico executive editor, Jim VandeHei, Harris founded Politico for its launch on January 23, 2007 and served as editor-in-chief until 2019. Harris is the author of a book on Bill Clinton called The Survivor, and the co-author with Mark Halperin of The Way to Win: Clinton, Bush, Rove and How to Take the White House in 2008.

Jim VandeHei American newspaper journalist

James "Jim" VandeHei is the co-founder and CEO of Axios and the former executive editor and co-founder of Politico. Previously, he was a national political reporter at The Washington Post, where he worked as White House correspondent.

The Washington Post is a major American daily newspaper published in Washington, D.C., with a particular emphasis on national politics and the federal government. It has the largest circulation in the Washington metropolitan area. Its slogan "Democracy Dies in Darkness" began appearing on its masthead in 2017. Daily broadsheet editions are printed for the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.

From the beginning, journalists covering political campaigns for Politico carried a video camera to each assignment, [9] and they were encouraged to promote their work elsewhere. [10] By 2008, Politico received more than three million unique visits per month. [11]

In September 2008, The New York Times reported that Politico would expand its operations following the 2008 presidential election: "[A]fter Election Day, [Politico] will add reporters, editors, Web engineers and other employees; expand circulation of its newspaper edition in Washington; and print more often." [12] Between the 2008 and 2012 elections, Politico's staff more than tripled in size. [13] Notable additions included two political commentators, Michael Kinsley and Joe Scarborough, as opinion writers. [14]

Michael Kinsley is an American political journalist and commentator. Primarily active in print media as both a writer and editor, he also became known to television audiences as a co-host on Crossfire. Kinsley has been a notable participant in the mainstream media's development of online content.

Joe Scarborough American cable news and talk radio host, lawyer, author, and former politician

Charles Joseph Scarborough is an American cable news host and former congressman from Florida. He is currently the co-host of Morning Joe on MSNBC with Mika Brzezinski, his wife. He previously hosted Scarborough Country on the same network. Scarborough was previously a lawyer and a politician and served in the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 2001 as a Republican for the 1st district of Florida.

In 2009 the web pages shortened their name from The Politico to more simply just Politico.

In 2011, Politico began to focus more on long-form journalism and news analysis. [5] [15] This shift in coverage received further support in June 2013 with the hiring of Susan Glasser to oversee "opinion from prominent outside voices" and "long-form storytelling." [16] In September 2014, Glasser was tapped to serve as Politico's new editor, following the resignation of Richard Berke the previous month. [17]

Long-form journalism is a branch of journalism dedicated to longer articles with larger amounts of content. Typically this will be between 1,000 and 20,000 words. Long-form articles often take the form of creative nonfiction or narrative journalism.

Susan Glasser

Susan B. Glasser is an American journalist and news editor. She writes the column "Trump’s Washington" in The New Yorker and is an editor at Politico. She previously served as editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy magazine and editor at The Washington Post and Roll Call.

VandeHei was named Politico's new chief executive in October 2013. [18] Under his leadership, Politico continued to grow: in 2014 alone, it expanded revenues by 25%. [19] By 2016, Politico had nearly 500 employees worldwide. [20]

Amidst reports of tensions, VandeHei and Allen announced that they would leave Politico after the 2016 presidential election. [5] [21] Allbritton was named as CEO in Vandehei's stead. [21] In April 2017, Politico announced that investment banker Patrick Steel would succeed as Allbritton as CEO, effective May 8. [22]

Politico Playbook

On June 25, 2007, [23] Mike Allen launched Playbook, a daily early-morning email newsletter. [24] [25] Within a few years, the newsletter had attained a large readership amongst members of the D.C. community. [7] By 2016, over 100,000 people – including "insiders, outsiders, lobbyists and journalists, governors, senators, presidents and would-be presidents" – read Playbook daily. [26] Multiple commentators credit Allen and Playbook with strongly influencing the substance and tone of the rest of the national political news cycle. [7] [26] [27]

Daniel Lippman joined Politico in June 2014, in large part to assist Allen with Playbook. [28] Upon Allen's departure in July 2016, Anna Palmer and Jake Sherman joined Lippman to assume Playbook-writing duties. [29] In March 2017, Politico announced the creation of a second, mid-day edition of Playbook – entitled "Playbook Power Briefing" – written by the same people who authored the morning edition. [30]

In 2017, a weekly sponsorship of Playbook cost between $50,000 and $60,000. [31] [32]

Politico Pro

Politico Pro launched in 2010. [33] With roughly 100 reporters at its disposal, Politico Pro provides in-depth coverage of over a dozen major topic areas. [33] [34] The service charges its readers by topic area, with the costs running well over $1,000 per topic per year. [25] [33] Despite the paywall in place, Politico Pro has a 93% subscription renewal rate, and it provides one fourth of Politico's overall revenue. [5] [25] Access to the main site and the Playbook remained free of charge. [33]

Politico Magazine

In November 2013, Politico launched Politico Magazine ( ISSN   2381-1595), which is published online and bimonthly in print. [35] [36] In contrast to Politico's focus on "politics and policy scoops" and breaking news, Politico Magazine focuses on "high-impact, magazine-style reporting," such as long-form journalism. [35] [37] The first editor of Politico Magazine was Susan Glasser, who came to the publication from Foreign Policy magazine. [16] [37] [38]

After Glasser was promoted to become Politico's editor, Garrett Graff was named as editor, followed by Stephen Heuser. In December 2016, Blake Hounshell was named the new editor-in-chief of the magazine. [39]

Along with a targeted free audience of roughly 30,000 readers, Politico Magazine is available via subscription for $200 per year. [40] Content from Politico Magazine is also accessible online. [41]

State editions

In September 2013, Politico acquired the online news site Capital New York, which also operated separate departments covering Florida and New Jersey. [42] In April 2015, Politico announced its intention to rebrand the state feeds with the Politico name (Politico Florida, Politico New Jersey, and Politico New York) to expand its coverage of state politics. [43] In September 2018, Politico announced it would launch Politico California Pro [44] .

Global expansion

In September 2014, Politico formed a joint venture with German publisher Axel Springer SE to launch its European edition, based in Brussels. [45] In December 2014, the joint venture announced its acquisition of Development Institute International, a leading French events content provider, and European Voice , a European political newspaper, to be re-launched under the Politico brand. Former Wall Street Journal editorial board member Matthew Kaminski is the executive editor of the European edition. [46] [47] Politico Europe debuted in print on April 23, 2015. [48]

Website redesign

On March 27, 2018, Politico revealed that it had redesigned its website for the first time since 2014. [49] Changes included a redesigned and more mobile-friendly home page, a different typeface (with Din replacing Proxima Nova), and a new "Quick Pops" feed of breaking news stories. [49] [50]

Controversies

Politico editor Michael Hirsh resigned in November 2016 after publishing the home address of white nationalist Richard B. Spencer on Facebook. [51] [52]

Politico Magazine published an article in April 2017 purporting to show long-term links between U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Jewish outreach organization Chabad-Lubavitch. [53] The article was widely condemned, with the head of the Anti-Defamation League, Jonathan Greenblatt, saying that it "evokes age-old myths about Jews." [54] [55] [56]

Cambridge Analytica micro-targeted pro-Trump and anti-Clinton with native advertising and sponsored or branded content on Politico. [57] [58] [59]

Politico was accused again of anti-semitism, when an article depicting imagery of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders next to money trees, was published. Sanders being the only Jewish presidential nominee was targeted for the amount of wealth he accumulated over his entire life time [60] Politico staff writer Michael Kruse wrote the article detailing the senator’s wealth, writing that Sanders “might still be cheap,” according to one of the senator’s friends, “but he’s sure not poor.” To share the story Politico’s official Twitter account used the quote, Sanders “might still be cheap, but he’s sure not poor,” managing to combine two anti-Semitic tropes (Jews are cheap; Jews are rich). The tweet was later deleted. [61]

Distribution and content

As of 2017, Politico claimed to average 26 million unique visitors a month to its American website, and more than 1.5 million unique visitors to its European site. [62]

The print newspaper has a circulation of approximately 32,000, distributed for free in Washington, D.C. and Manhattan. [63] The newspaper prints up to five issues a week while Congress is in session and sometimes publishes one issue a week when Congress is in recess. [64] It carries advertising, including full-page ads from trade associations and a large help-wanted section listing Washington political jobs.

Politico is a partner with several news outlets that co-report and distribute its video, print and audio content. Partners include CBS News, [65] Allbritton Communications's ABC station WJLA and cable channel NewsChannel 8, [9] radio station WTOP-FM, [10] and Yahoo! News election coverage.

Ideology and influence

In a 2007 opinion piece, progressive watchdog group Media Matters for America accused Politico of having a "Republican tilt." [66] In contrast, in 2011 politically conservative The Daily Caller declaimed Politico as having a pronounced liberal bias. [67] A 2012 study found that the percentage of Politico readers that identify as Democrats — 29% — is equal to that which identifies as Republicans. [68]

Multiple commentators have credited Politico's original organizational philosophy — namely, prioritizing scoops and publishing large quantities of stories — with forcing other, more-established publications to make a number of changes, such as increasing their pace of production and changing their tone. Breitbart News Network is a far-right syndicated American news, opinion and commentary website founded in mid-2007 by conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart, who conceived it as "the Huffington Post of the right." Its journalists are widely considered to be ideologically driven, and some of its content has been called misogynistic, xenophobic, and racist by liberals and many traditional conservatives alike. The site has published a number of lies, conspiracy theories, and intentionally misleading stories.

Peter Baker (journalist) American journalist

Peter Eleftherios Baker is an American journalist and author who is the chief White House correspondent for The New York Times and a political analyst for MSNBC. He covers President Donald Trump, the fourth president he has covered after Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Garrett Graff American journalist

Garrett M. Graff is an American journalist and author. He is a former editor of Politico Magazine, editor-in-chief of Washingtonian magazine in Washington, D.C., and instructor at Georgetown University in the Masters in Professional Studies Journalism and Public Relations program.

Michael Allen (journalist) American political journalist

Michael Allen is an American political journalist. He is the co-founder and executive editor of Axios and former chief political reporter for Politico. While at Politico, he wrote the daily Playbook; in April 2010, in reference to his frequent correspondence with White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer, The New York Times called him "The Man The White House Wakes Up To." Prior to joining Politico for its 2007 launch, he worked at numerous other publications, including The New York Times and Time.

Michael S. Schmidt American journalist

Michael S. Schmidt is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist, author, and correspondent for The New York Times in Washington, D.C. and national security contributor for MSNBC and NBC News. He covers national security and federal law enforcement and has broken several high-profile stories. Among the stories was the existence of Hillary Clinton's private email account. He won a Pulitzer Prize for breaking the news that President Trump had asked the F.B.I. director James B. Comey for a loyalty pledge, and to close the federal investigation into his former national security adviser. That story led the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to investigate President Trump.

Ben Rhodes (White House staffer) American speechwriter

Benjamin J. Rhodes is a writer and political commentator. With Jake Sullivan, he is the co-chair of National Security Action, a political NGO. He contributes to NBC News and MSNBC regularly as a political commentator. He is also a Crooked Media contributor, and co-host of the foreign policy podcast Pod Save the World.

The Washington Free Beacon is an American conservative political journalism website launched in 2012. It states that it is "dedicated to uncovering the stories that the powers that be hope will never see the light of day" and producing "in-depth investigative reporting on a wide range of issues, including public policy, government affairs, international security, and media."

Mollie Ziegler Hemingway is an American author, columnist, and political commentator. She is a senior editor at the online magazine The Federalist and a contributor for Fox News. Her work has been published in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post, CNN, RealClearPolitics, and National Review.

The Independent Journal Review is a conservative American news and opinion website based in Alexandria, Virginia. The publication was founded in 2012 by Alex Skatell. Mercedes Schlapp

Mercedes Schlapp is an American lobbyist and columnist. From September 2017 to July 2019, she served as White House Director of Strategic Communications in the Trump administration. Since July 2019, she has worked on the Trump 2020 re-election campaign.

David Martosko is the U.S. political editor at DailyMail.com, the website of the British tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail. He was executive editor at The Daily Caller from 2011 to 2013. Under his tenure at the Daily Caller, he published false stories about Sen. Bob Menendez using prostitutes and defended false stories about the EPA. From 2001 to 2011, he worked the Center for Consumer Freedom, which advocates for industry interests on consumer rights issues, at the PR firm Berman and Company.

Big League Politics is an American far-right media website founded by former Breitbart News employees. The site was announced in 2017 by one of its founders as an investigative outfit. In early 2018, Big League Politics was acquired by Mustard Seed Media which is owned by Reilly O'Neal and Noel Fritsch. On its about page, Big League Politics states "We are not conservative. We are not liberal". Its editor-in-chief is former Breitbart reporter Patrick Howley. The Wall Street Journal describes the website as "backed by Republican operatives".

Megan Twohey Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter

Megan Twohey is an investigative reporter with The New York Times. Twohey has also written investigative reports for Reuters, the Chicago Tribune and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. She has investigated exploitive doctors, revealed untested rape kits, and uncovered a secret underground network of abandoned unwanted adopted children. Her investigative reports have led to criminal convictions and helped prompt new laws aimed at protecting vulnerable people and children. She has also won other national journalism awards and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting.

Julie Hirschfeld Davis is an award-winning American journalist who covers Congress for The New York Times and is a political analyst for CNN. She was previously a White House correspondent.
