Ambassador Prof. Hon. Samson Kegengo Ongeri, EGH (born 23 February 1938) is a Kenyan politician. He is the former Senator for Kisii County. [1]
Ongeri was born on 23 February 1938, in Gesusu, Nyaribari Masaba. [2]
Hon Prof Sam Ongeri was first elected to Parliament in 1988 and was a member until 1992. [3] He was re-elected to represent the Nyaribari Masaba Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya in 1992 to 1997 with overwhelming votes. His tenure lasted until 2002., [4] he was Minister of Education from 2007 to 2012 and Foreign Minister of Kenya between 2012 and 2013,and Permanent Representative to the UN-Habitat from 2015-2017 where he initiated and participated in the UN-Habitat’s reduced spatial inequality and poverty in communities across the urban-rural continuum, Enhanced shared prosperity of cities and regions, Strengthened climate action and improved urban environment and Effective urban crisis prevention and response. He unsuccessfully ran for office to represent Kisii County as a senator in 2013. [5]
In 2017 he was elected as Kisii County Senator. [3] He was the chairman of Athletics Kenya from 1974 to 1984. [6]
On 12 September 2012, Ongeri was among a Kenyan delegation meeting in Mogadishu with newly elected Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, when two suicide bombers and two gunmen dressed in government uniforms attempted an attack on the Jazeera Hotel where the officials had convened. There were reportedly around 10 casualties, among which were three Somali security detail, one AU peacekeeper, and the assailants themselves. [7] None of the assembled statesmen were harmed. [8] The Al-Shabaab militant group later claimed responsibility for the attacks. [7]
He attended the Gesusu Primary and Intermediate from 1943-51. Went to Bugema Missionary College 1952-57. Took a Pre-Medical Course at University of Delhi 1959-61. Took Bachelors of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from University of Bombay 1961-66. Attended University of London 1971-72, where he learned child health. Took his Pre-Board Examination at the University of Edinburgh1970-72. Became a physician after graduating from Royal College of Physicians 1971-72. Took a WHO Cours in Immunology at University of Nairobi 1973-76. [9] [2]
Ongeri is married to Dr Elizabeth and they have four children, Engineer Caroline, Nyagaka, Dr Sylvia, Dr Fiona. The Ongeri's are members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and Hon Ongeri as a member of the Orange Democratic Movement . [2]
Nyanza Province was one of Kenya's eight administrative provinces before the formation of the 47 counties under the 2010 constitution. Six counties were organised in the area of the former province.

It is inhabited by a minority group of people fondly known as Kuria people also referred to as Abakuria (Mkuria/Wakuria) in Swahili. They are scattered across the Kenya- Tanzania border and they are neighbors to the Kisii, Luo and Maasai people.

The transitional federal government (TFG) was the government of Somalia between 2004 and 2012. Established 2004 in Djibouti through various international conferences, it was an attempt to restore national institutions to the country after the 1991 collapse of the Siad Barre government and the ensuing Somali Civil War.
The Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS) was political party formed in Eritrea during September 2007 as the successor to the Islamic Courts Union (ICU). Mohamed Yusuf Haji was a Kenyan politician. He was the Minister of Defence of Kenya from 2008 to 2013, and briefly served as its acting Minister of Internal Security and Provincial Affairs in 2012. He has served in the Senate of Kenya since 2013 under the jubilee party. He died on 15 February 2021.
The Somali Civil War (2009–present) is the ongoing phase of the Somali Civil War which is concentrated in southern and central Somalia. Hizbul Islam, also known as Hizbul Islaami, Hisbi Islam, or Hezb-ul Islam, was a Somali Islamist group formed after four Islamist groups merged to oppose the new Somali government of President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed. The four groups were: Hassan Aweys' the ARS-A, Jabhatul Islamiya, Hassan Abdullah Hersi al-Turki's the Mu'askar Ras Kamboni and Muaskar Anole, the Marehan clan's Militia and Harti clan's militia. These groups previously took part in the fighting against the Ethiopian occupation of Somalia.

Kisii County is a county in the former Nyanza Province in southwestern Kenya. Its capital and largest town is Kisii. The county has a population of 1,266,860 people. It borders Nyamira County to the North East, Narok County to the South, and Homa bay and Migori Counties to the West. The county covers an area of 1,318 km².
Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas, also more known as Abdiweli Gaas, is a Somali American economist and politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Somalia from June 2011 to October 2012, and briefly afterwards as an MP in the newly formed Federal Parliament. During his time as Premier, Ali is credited with having devised the formal "Roadmap for the End of Transition", a political process that provided clear benchmarks leading toward the establishment of permanent democratic institutions in the country. On 8 January 2014, he was elected the 5th President of Puntland.
Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is a Somali politician who has served as the president of Somalia since May 2022. He is the founder and current chairman of the Union for Peace and Development Party. He was indirectly elected as President of the Federal Republic of Somalia on 15 May 2022, defeating the incumbent president Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo. He previously served in the same position as the 8th president of Somalia from 2012 to 2017. A civil and political rights activist, Hassan was previously a university professor and dean at SIMAD University, which he co-founded.
Jubaland, the Juba Valley or Azania, is a Federal Member State in southern Somalia. Its eastern border lies 40–60 km (25–35 mi) east of the Jubba River, stretching from Gedo to the Indian Ocean, while its western side flanks the North Eastern Province in Kenya, which was carved out of Jubaland during the colonial period.
On 20 February 2015, Al-Shabaab militants launched a surprise attack on the Central Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia, where various Federal Government of Somalia officials had gathered for Friday prayers at the compound's mosque. Between 11 and 25 people were killed, including the suicide bomber, local deputy mayor and two MPs. The Federal Cabinet subsequently announced the formation of a security committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the attack, as well as a ministerial committee to follow up on the situation. Security forces thereafter apprehended a number of suspects, and deployed more police and soldiers onto the city's main roads.
On 18 March 2014, a car loaded with explosives detonated outside the Hotel Amalo in Buloburde, Somalia, which was used by African Union and Somali troops who had captured the town from Al-Shabaab a week earlier. Gunfire was reported to have followed for five hours, the car bombing having occurred around 02:00 local time. At least 27 people were killed in the attack.
