Kisii County is a county in the former Nyanza Province in southwestern Kenya. Its capital and largest town is Kisii. The county has a population of 1,266,860 people according to the 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census . [3] It borders Nyamira County to the North East, Narok County to the South, and Homa bay and Migori Counties to the West. [4] The county covers an area of 1,318 km2. [5]

There is total population of 1,266,860 of which 605,784 are males, 661,038 females and 38 intersex persons. There are 308,054 household with an average household size of 4.1 persons per household and a population density 958 people per square kilometre. [7]

Climatic conditions

Kisii receives an average rainfall of 1500 millimeters, with long rains falling in March and June. Maximum temperature range between 21–30 °C (70–86 °F) and minimum temperatures range between 15–20 °C (59–68 °F). [5]

Administrative and political units

County leadership

Simba Arati is the current governor after clinching the seat with 270,928 votes in the 2022 election. [8] Robert Monda served as his deputy between August 2022 and March 2024 who was impeached by the senate and in his place the governor nominated Elijah Obebo, Richard Onyoka as the county senator, and Donya Toto as the county Woman Representative at the National Assembly. [9]

James Ongwae was the first governor after being elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2017 for a second and final term. [10] He was deputized by Joash Maangi Gongera. [11] Prof. Samson Ongeri is the senator and joined office in 2017 after flooring the first senator of the county Chris Obure. [12] [13] Janet Ongera is the woman representative and second to hold office, Mary Keraa-Otara being the first elected women representative. [14] [15]

Administrative units

There are nine constituencies, eleven sub-counties, forty five county assembly wards, one hundred and three locations and two hundred and thirty seven sub-locations. [17]

Political units

The county has nine electoral constituencies: [18] The county has eleven sub-counties. They are derived from the same constituency boundaries but two constituencies, Bobasi and South Mugirango, have two sub-counties each. The sub-counties often work directly with national government. [19]

Education

There are 1079 ECD centres 1081 primary schools and 371 secondary schools. The county has also 1 teachers training colleges, 49 Youth Polytechnics, 63 Technical, vocational education and training (VET) 158 adult training, 1 University and 3 university campuses. [20]

Transport and communication

The county is covered by 1,131.8 km of road network of which 669.2 km is earth roads, 292.6 km is murrammed and 170 km are tarmacked. [24] [25]

Trade and commerce

There are 102 trading centres, 16,199 registered businesses, 12,110 licensed retail traders, 49 supermarkets, 365 licensed wholesale traders. [26]

Nyamira County is a county in the former Nyanza Province of Kenya. Formally a district, Nyamira was hived off Kisii District in 1989, and it shares a common boundary with what was known as Nyamira District. The main cash crops grown are bananas and tea. The county has a population of 605,576. Its capital and largest town is Nyamira, with an urban population of around 41,668 The county is also referred to as North Kisii.

Robert Onsare Monda is the Deputy Governor of Kisii County, Kenya. Monda served as the Member of Parliament for Nyaribari Chache after defeating veteran politician Simeon Nyachae, but his bid to maintain his seat for the second term was unsuccessful. He lost to ODM's Chris Bichage in 2013. After 10 years out of power, Monda came back to the political scene after he was named as Simba Arati's running mate for the Kisii County gubernatorial race in 2022. The two won and were sworn in August 2022.

Nyaribare Chache is an electoral constituency in Kenya. It is one of nine constituencies in Kisii County. The constituency was established for the 1988 elections from the larger Nyaribari Constituency to form two constituencies of Nyaribari Chache and Masaba.

Kitutu Chache was a former electoral constituency in Kenya. It was formally known as Kitutu West Constituency from 1963 to 1988. It was one of four constituencies in the former Kisii District. It has been divided into Kitutu Chache North Constituency and Kitutu Chache South Constituency, both part of Kisii County.

Nyamira District was an administrative district in the Nyanza Province of Kenya. It was split from Kisii District in 1989 and was sometimes referred to as North Kisii District. The district had a population of 492,102. Its capital town was Nyamira.

Kisii District was a district in the Nyanza Province in southwestern Kenya. Its capital town was Kisii. The district was created during the colonial period from the South Kavirondo District. The district is inhabited mostly by the Gusii people. Nyamira District was later carved out of Kisii in 1989. Further splitting led to the creation of Kisii Central District and Gucha District. In 2013, the district's former boundaries as at 1992, except Nyamira District, were effected again to form Kisii County.
