Makueni County is a county in the former Eastern Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Wote.The largest town is Wote town followed by Emali town which is also an important market and stop over for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). Emali town is multicultural and adds diversity to Makueni county.The county has a population of 987,653 (2019 census). The county lies between Latitude 1° 35' and 2° 59' South and Longitude 37° 10' and 38° 30' East. It borders Machakos County to the North, Kitui County to the East, Taita Taveta County to the South and Kajiado County to the West and covers an area of 8,008.9 km2. [2]

Physical and topical features

The county has a number of prominent features in including volcanic Chyullu hills which lie along the South West border of the county Mbooni hills in Mbooni sub county and Kilungu and Iuani hills in Kaiti sub county, Makongo forest and scenic view, Makuli forest and Nzaui hill. [2]

Climatic conditions

The county experience semi-arid climatic conditions with an average temperature range between 15C – 26C and Annual rainfall ranges between 250mm to 400mm per annum on the lower regions of the county and the higher region receives rainfall ranging from 800mm to 900mm. [3]

The county has a total population of 987,653 of which 497,942 females and 20 intersex persons. There are 77,495 household with an average household size of 5.8 persons per household and a population density 6 people per square kilometre. [4]

Education

There are 78 ECD centres 997 primary schools and 375 secondary schools. The county has also 3 teachers training colleges, 37 Youth Polytechnics, 231 adult training institutions, 2 technical training institutions, 3 university campuses. [26]

Health

There is a total of 156 health facilities, 726 hospital beds and 1261 cots in the county. County has 815 health personnel of different cadre. [27]

HIV prevalence rate is 5.1% in 2017. [28]

Transport and Communication

There is one air strip and 8 railway lines with total coverage of 140 km. The county is covered by 7670 km of road network. Of this 6,776 km is covered by earth surface, 706 km is murram surface and 188 km of surface is covered by Bitumen. [29] [30]

There are twenty post office with 4,850 installed letter boxes, 3,302 rented letter boxes, 1,548 vacant letter boxes and 31 licences stamp vendors. [31]

The Kamba or Akamba people are a Bantu ethnic group who predominantly live in the area of Kenya stretching from Nairobi to Tsavo and north to Embu, in the southern part of the former Eastern Province. This land is called Ukambani and constitutes Makueni County, Kitui County and Machakos County. They also form the second largest ethnic group in 8 counties including Nairobi and Mombasa counties.

Mutula Kilonzo was a Kenyan politician and Senior Counsel, who served as Minister of Education after having previously served as the Minister for Nairobi Metropolitan and justice and constitutional affairs He belonged to the Orange Democratic Movement-Kenya and was elected to represent the Makueni County as Senator in the 2013 general elections.

Makueni Constituency is an electoral constituency in Kenya. It is one of six constituencies in Makueni County. The constituency was established for the 1966 elections.Its current MP is Daniel Kitonga Maanzo of Wiper party who is also vying for Makueni Senate.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">John Harun Mwau</span> Kenyan politician and businessman

John Harun Mwau is a Kenyan businessman and politician. He is the former Member of Parliament for Kilome Constituency. He was the first director of the defunct Kenya Anti-Corruption Authority but was removed after a year when a tribunal ruled that he was unfit to hold the office.

Local elections were held in Machakos County to elect a Governor and County Assembly on 4 March 2013. Under the new constitution, which was passed in a 2010 referendum, the 2013 general elections were the first in which Governors and members of the County Assemblies for the newly created counties were elected. They will also be the first general elections run by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) which has released the official list of candidates.

Kethi Diana Kilonzo is a Kenyan lawyer, lecturer and accountant. She is the daughter of the late Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo and is most notable for her performance as the head counsel for Africa Centre for Open Governance's petition against the declaration of Uhuru Kenyatta as the President of Kenya. Kethi Diana Kilonzo argued against the results announced by IEBC Chairman Isaack Hassan and cited the results as not credible. The petition, which had been filed alongside that of the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy, sought to nullify the 2013 election, which the two petitioners claimed to have been altered by the first respondent under the leadership of the second respondent to the advantage of the third and fourth respondents that is the president and deputy president of Kenya, respectively. The petition was heard by a panel of six Supreme Court judges, headed by Willy Mutunga

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Death of Mutula Kilonzo</span>

On 27 April 2013, Kenyan politician and lawyer Mutula Kilonzo, who was serving as the first Senator of Makueni County, died at his ranch in Maanzoni, Machakos County. A requiem mass was held at the Nairobi Baptist Church in Nairobi on 8 May, followed by his burial at his home village in Makueni County, in line with his wishes.

Makueni District was an administrative district in the Eastern Province of Kenya. Its capital town was Wote. The district had a population of 771,545 and an area of 7,966 km2.

Richard Katemi Makenga is a Kenyan businessman and politician, who is currently the Member of National Assembly for Kaiti Constituency in Makueni County, Kenya.

The Muungano Party (MP) is a political party in Kenya.

The Kibwezi–Kitui–Kandwia–Usueni Road, also B7 Road (Kenya) is a road in Kenya, the largest economy in the East African Community. The road connects the town of Kibwezi in Makueni County to the community of Usueni in Kitui County. Since its upgrading, the road has opened up many villages and rural-urban settings to business and agricultural activities.

Dr. Julius Makau Malombe, EGH is a Kenyan politician and the first and current elected Governor of Kitui County. He is elected on a Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya (WDM-K) which he won the 2013 elections garnering 163,904 votes. He defended his seat on Wiper ticket in the 2017 general election but lost to Charity Ngilu coming third behind former senator David Musila however he recaptured the seat and won after the 9 August 2022 gubernatorial elections with 198,004 votes defeating former senator David Musila who had 114,606 votes and Jonathan with 10,639 votes. As the pioneer governor of Kitui he is credited with much of the development gains made in the region. On 12 December 2022 Dr. Malombe was awarded the Elder of The Golden Heart by President William Ruto.

Kibwezi West is a constituency in Kenya. It is one of six constituencies in Makueni County.

The Hon. Dr. Patrick Musimba MP is a Kenyan politician and Member of the National Assembly representing the Kibwezi West Constituency in Makueni County.He is now vying for the gubernatorial seat of Makueni county in the 2022 elections. He was first elected to Parliament in March 2013 as an independent candidate, but announced in June 2019 that he was joining the Wiper party.
