Samaldas Arts College or Samaldas College is a college in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India. It was founded in 1885 by Takhtsinhji, the Maharaja of Bhavnagar State in memory of his Diwan (minister) Samaldas Paramananddas Mehta. It is one of the oldest colleges in western India. It is affiliated to Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University.

Samaldas College was established by Takhtsinhji, the Maharaja of Bhavnagar State in memory of his Diwan Samaldas Paramananddas Mehta. [1] [2] [3] The college was affiliated to University of Bombay and the classes were opened in January 1885 [2] in Majiraj Girls High School building. [4]

The foundation stone of the building opposite Peel Garden was laid on 25 November 1884 by James Furgusson, Governor of Bombay. The building was opened on 17 December 1886 by Lord Reay, Governor Bombay. The building was occupied in 1893. [2] The building was constructed by R. Proctor Sims, the Public Works Councillor. [1] The building is now used as the Sheth J. P. Ayurveda College. [4]

In 1932, Krishnakumarsinhji, Maharaja of Bhavnagar, built a new building for the college on Vaghawadi Road. The building is used as the P. P. Institute of Science since June 1963. [4]

On 1 November 1955, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, laid the foundation of the present building of the college. [4] [5] The college is now affiliated to Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University. [6]

Diwan Bahadur Krishnalal Mohanlal Jhaveri was an Indian writer, scholar, literary historian, translator, and judge from what is now Gujarat, India. His works have been published in Gujarati, English, and Persian. Jhaveri served as president of the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad from 1931 to 1933.

Government Medical College, Bhavnagar is a full-fledged Government Medical college. It was established in the year 1995. The college imparts the degree Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS). Nursing and para-medical courses are also offered. The college is affiliated to Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University and is recognised by Medical Council of India. The hospital associated with the college is one of the largest hospitals in the Bhavnagar. The selection to the college is done on the basis of merit through National Eligibility and Entrance Test. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Lallubhai Samaldas</span>

Sir Lallubhai Samaldas Mehta was a wealthy aristocrat and revenue commissioner since the age of 18 in the court of the Maharaja of Bhavnagar in Gujarat. He was involved in the establishment of numerous industries in western India, particularly in the shipping industry. He also took an interest in the cooperative movement and presided over the Swadeshi League and is known as the Father of Co-operative Movement in India. The Samaldas College in Bhavnagar was established by Maharaja of Bhavnagar in his father's memory. He also took an interest in national politics and was associated with the leaders of the time.
