The delegation included two track and field athletes, Benjamin Enzema and Reïna-Flor Okori who both qualified for the Games through wildcard places since their fastest times did not meet the required qualification standards, Okori was selected as the flag bearer for the opening and closing ceremonies. Enzema did not advance beyond the qualification round for the men's 800 metres event and Okori was unable to start the women's 100 metre hurdles contest.

It was the nation's second consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics since their debut in 2016. The South Sudan National Olympic Committee was formed and recognised by the IOC in 2015. The delegation consisted of two athletes, they were Abraham Guem and Lucia Moris in athletics. South Sudan did not win any medals during the Paris Olympics. Guem and Moris were the flagbearers in the opening ceremony, and Guem was the sole flagbearer at the closing ceremony.
