Samia Zekaria Gutu is an Ethiopian diplomat. She serves as the Director General of the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia and was chairwoman of the National Election Board of Ethiopia until 2018. [1] [2]

Early life

Samia was born in the city of Harar and raised in Dire Dawa. She credits her mother who was president of the Harari association called Afocha for instilling leadership skills in her at a young age. Samia has a BA in agricultural economics at Haramaya University and an MA in econometrics/economic statistics at Texas Tech University. [3]

Career

Samia was chairwoman of the National Election Board of Ethiopia until she was replaced by Birtukan Mideksa in 2018. [4] She was also previously the Ethiopian ambassador to Nigeria and is currently the Ethiopian ambassador to Qatar. [5] [6] [7]

Before 9 March 1989 the CSA was known as the Central Statistical Office (CSO).

Nayi is an Omotic language of the Afro-Asiatic language family spoken in western Ethiopia. Most of the speakers of the language live in two separated areas. The largest grouping live in Decha woreda of the Keffa Zone. The nearest city to their region is Bonga. A few in Dulkuma village of the Shoa Bench woreda, some in Sheko woreda having moved there in 1976-1977 as a result of conflicts between local feudal lords and the military government. In Decha, young people no longer speak the language.

It is located at Addis Ababa University, Sidist (6) Kilo campus, which was at the time of the IES's opening, named Haile Selassie I University after the last emperor of Abyssinia.
