Samuel Dow Limited was a wine merchants and whisky bonders based in Glasgow, Scotland. [1] The company was known for its range of blended scotch whiskies and its Public houses around the city of Glasgow. [2]

History

Samuel Dow Limited was established in 1807 by Samuel McCalman/Dow from Lochaber. [3] He opened a very small bar at 45 King Street/Bridgegate in central Glasgow. [4]

The company became well known in 19th century Glasgow, and it was the third generation Samuel Dow, who developed the business. [5] In 1881 he opened a bar at 226 Great Western Road. [6] In 1896 the company headquarters moved to 242 Clyde Street from 54 to 58 Mitchell Street. [7] From these premises various blends of scotch whisky were produced and exported worldwide. [5] In 1899 the company also had a public house at 1157–1159 Pollokshaws Road. [8]

In 1931 Samuel Dow took over a bar at 67–71 Nithsdale Road in Pollokshaws. [9] The company also operated a public house at 9–11 Dundas Street near Glasgow Queen Street railway station. [10] As of 2016, the bar in Dundas Street retained Samuel Dow's name with the bar in Nithsdale Road having changed hands (and name) in 2015. [9]

Whisky blends included Sam'l Dow's specially selected blended scotch whisky and Dow's Pigeon Blend which was known for its distinctive white pigeon logo. [11] Other blends included McAndrew's, which was also produced and bottled in Glasgow. Occasionally, bottles of Samuel Dow whisky become available to purchase, and are considered to be collector's items.

John Archibald Dow was the fourth generation of the Samuel Dow dynasty and he had three children. [7] [12] Samuel Dow (1908–1976) was educated at the High School of Glasgow and Strathallan School in Perthshire. [2] [12] Samuel held several important offices including, president of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association from 1964 to 1965, Master of The Worshipful Company of Vintners in 1971 and chairman of the Scottish Wholesalers Wine Merchants Association from 1953 to 1957. [2] [12]

James was educated at Strathallan School, St Johns Cambridge, and Middlesex Hospital Medical School.

John (Alastair) Alexander Dow was educated at Strathallan School and graduated from St John's College, Cambridge in 1939. [7] He served as a lieutenant with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve during World War II around the English Channel and Western Approaches. [7] As with Samuel he became president of the Scottish Wine and Spirit Merchants' Benevolent Institution. [7]

In 1965 Samuel Dow Limited, and four of its associated companies, were bought by another Glasgow wine and spirit merchant, David Sandeman and Son Limited, who were founded in 1821. [1] Both Samuel Dow and Alastair Dow continued as directors. [1] The whisky interests of both companies were merged, enabling further expansion of the business. [1] David Sandeman and Son Limited was bought by Allied Breweries in 1970. [13] The Samuel Dow public houses came under the control of Ind Coope (Scotland), a subsidiary of Allied Breweries. [13] The deal enabled Ind Coope to expand their portfolio of public houses and hotels. [13]

Auchentoshan distillery is a single malt whisky distillery in the west of Scotland. The name Auchentoshan is from Gaelic Achadh an Oisein and translates as "corner of the field". Auchentoshan is located at the foot of the Old Kilpatrick Hills on the outskirts of Clydebank in West Dunbartonshire near the Erskine Bridge. It produces single malts such as The Macallan, Highland Park, The Glenrothes, Naked Malt, and The Famous Grouse blended Scotch whisky. The spirits portfolio also includes Noble Oak Bourbon of Independence, Kentucky, and Brugal, the leading golden rum in the Caribbean. As of 2006 most distilled spirits labelled as "whisky" in India were a form of Indian-made foreign liquor, commonly blends based on neutral spirits that are distilled from fermented molasses with only a small portion consisting of traditional malt whisky, usually about 10 to 12 percent. Outside India, such a drink would more likely be labelled a rum. According to the Scotch Whisky Association's 2013 annual report, unlike in the European Union (EU), "there is no compulsory definition of whisky in India, and the Indian voluntary standard does not require whisky to be distilled from cereals or to be matured. Very little Indian 'whisky' qualifies as whisky in the EU owing to the use of molasses or neutral alcohol, limited maturation and the use of flavourings. Such spirits are, of course, considerably cheaper to produce than genuine whisky." Such molasses-based blends made up 90 percent of the spirits consumed as "whisky" in India in 2004, although whisky wholly distilled from malt and other grains, was also manufactured and sold. By 2004 shortages of wheat had been overcome and India was one of the largest producers. Amrut, the first single malt whisky produced in India, was launched in Glasgow, Scotland in 2004. After expanding in Europe it was launched in India in 2010.

David Kinnear Thomson was the chairman and president of Peter Thomson (Perth) Limited, whisky blenders and exporters based in Perth, Scotland. He served as Lord Provost of Perth from 1966 to 1972 and chairman of Tayside Health Board from 1973 to 1977.

Peter Thomson (Perth) Limited was a Perth, Scotland-based whisky blender and wine merchants established in 1908. The company was known for producing Beneagles blended Scotch whisky. In 1983 the firm was bought by Sir Reo Stakis to complement the Haddows off-licence chain and wholesale business.

Douglas Laing & Co is an independent bottler of Scotch whisky. Based in Glasgow, Scotland and established in 1948, the company has a number of brands including its "Remarkable Regional Malts" range, encompassing The Epicurean, Timorous Beastie, Scallywag, Rock Island and Big Peat, as well as Old Particular, Provenance and Xtra Old Particular, which they collectively call their "Exceptional Single Casks". The firm also creates and sells King of Scots Blended Scotch Whisky, Clan Denny Single Casks and Premier Barrel.
