Dr. Samuel Hookway (born 22 January 1991) is an Australian former representative rower and a medical registrar working in the field of orthopaedics. As a rower he was a national champion and won a bronze medal at the 2012 U23 World Rowing Championships.
Hookway was raised in Tasmania and attended the Hutchins School where he took up rowing. His senior club rowing was from the Melbourne University Boat Club.
Hookway made his representative debut for his home state of Tasmania at the 2010 Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships contesting the Noel Wilkinson Trophy in the men's youth eight. [1] Having relocated to Melbourne for his tertiary studies in 2011 he was selected to the Victorian youth eight and in that crew he won the Noel Wilkinson Trophy in 2011. [2] In 2012 he moved into the Victorian senior men's eight and contested the King's Cup at the Australian Interstate Regatta in 2012, [3] in 2014 [4] and 2016, [5] finally enjoying a Victorian win in that event in 2016.
In MUBC colours he achieved podium finishes at numerous events at Australian Rowing Championships - gold in the U23 8+ and U23 4- in 2011; bronze in the U23 4- in 2012; bronze in the men's 2- in 2014 [6] and bronze in the men's 4- in 2016. [7] He raced at Australian University Championships for MUBC winning the national intervarsity title in the men's 8+ in 2011 [8] and achieving a second placing in that same event in 2012. [9]
Whilst at Cambridge University undertaking post-graduate studies Hookway rowed in the Cambridge senior men's eight which won the 2019 Boat Race. [10]
Hookway made his Australian representative debut at the 2012 World Rowing U23 Championships in Trakai. He stroked the Australian men's U23 eight to a bronze medal win. [11] That crew included a number of future Australian Olympians and world champions including Spencer Turrin, Alexander Hill, Alexander Lloyd and Angus Moore and David Watts. [11]
In early 2014 World Rowing Cup I was held in Sydney and Hookway was elevated to the Australian senior squad. All the Australian sweep oarsmen contested the coxless four event across four boats and Hookway's crew finished fifth in the final. Also at that regatta he raced in the 2nd Australian eight which finished fourth. [11]
Hookway secured a seat in the Australian men's eight for the 2015 European racing season. He rowed in the three seat when they finished fifth at the WRC III and then rowed at five at the 2015 World Rowing Championships when the Australian eight finished in overall ninth place. It was his last Australian representative appearance. [11]
Sam Hookway is the younger brother of Jonothan Hookway an Australian lightweight representative rower who won a Junior World Championship in 2006. Their father Russell Hookway was an Australian champion lightweight rower who made national representation at the 1984 World Rowing Championships.
Hookway first studied biomedical science at the University of Melbourne. He graduated with a medical degree from Monash University in 2018. He undertook post-graduate studies in surgery at Cambridge University in 2018 & 2019. [10] He has published papers in the field of orthopaedics and since 2022 has been an Orthopaedic Registrar with Barwon Health in Victoria.
Brendan Long is an Australian former representative rower. He twice represented at World Rowing Championships in a quad scull, is a dual Olympian and an Olympic record holder. He was an eight time Australian national champion in sculling boats and contested the national championship in the men's double scull every year from 1999 to 2009, winning that particular title on four occasions.
Catriona Sens is an Australian former representative rower. She was a national champion, an underage 2002 world champion, a dual Olympian and won a silver medal at the 2006 World Rowing Championships. She rowed in the Australian women's eight at the 2004 Athens Olympics and in the double scull at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Terence Rodney Davies, better known as Terry Davies, was an Australian representative rower who competed at two Olympic Games. He raced at the 1960 Rome Olympics in the Men's coxless pair and the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in the Men's eight. He won a gold medal at the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games in the Men's eight and represented in the Australian eight at the inaugural 1962 World Rowing Championships.
Lucy Stephan is an Australian rower. She is a multiple Australian champion, a 2016 and 2020 Olympian and a world champion who won a 2017 world title in the coxless four and regained that same world title in 2019. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics she set the pace from the bow seat of the Australian coxless four to a gold medal victory. She won the Remenham Challenge Cup at the 2018 Henley Royal Regatta in the Australian women's eight.
Sam Conrad is an Australian former representative rower. He was a national champion, a world champion and an Olympian like his father and grandfather.

Rosemary Popa is an Australian national champion rower, Olympic gold medalist, and former rower for the University of California, Berkeley. A dual citizen of Australia and the United States, she has represented both countries at World Rowing Championships, twice winning medals for Australia. She won the Remenham Challenge Cup at the 2018 Henley Royal Regatta in the Australian women's eight. In 2021, she was selected to represent Australia in the coxless four event at the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics, where she won the gold medal.
Adrian Maginn is an Australian former rowing coxswain and rowing coach. He was a five-time national champion and won a bronze medal at the 1978 World Rowing Championships.
Vaughan Bollen is an Australian former lightweight rower. He is from a prominent South Australian rowing family, was a seven-time Australian national champion and won a bronze medal at the 1978 World Rowing Championships. He competed over an eighteen-year period in events at the annual Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships firstly as a South Australian King's Cup coxswain from 1961, then as a South Australian Presidents Cup rower from 1967 and finally till 1979, as a Victorian state representative President's Cup rower.
Brian Richardson is an Australian former rower and rowing coach. He competed at the national elite level over a fifteen-year period representing both South Australian and Victoria. He was a representative at three world championships and at the 1976 Montreal and the 1980 Moscow Olympics. In a twenty-three year coaching career, he held national head coaching roles in both Canada and Australia from 1993 to 2008 and personally coached national crews to twelve world championship or Olympic medals.
Georgina Gotch is an Australian former national representative rower. She was a four-time national champion and a medallist at the 2018 World Rowing Championships.
