Samuel Louis Kaplan (born 1936) is an American diplomat who served as United States Ambassador to Morocco.He was appointed ambassador in 2009 by President Barack Obama,replacing the previous ambassador Thomas T. Riley. He is one of only a few American Jews to represent the United States in a Muslim nation.
Before entering the diplomatic service,Ambassador Kaplan was a well-known business and community leader in Minneapolis,where he headed a law firm that he founded in 1978. Ambassador Kaplan attended the University of Minnesota where he earned both an undergraduate and a law degree,graduating magna cum laude,and where he served as President of the University of Minnesota Law Review.
After law school graduation,Kaplan was an assistant professor of law and a guest speaker in law classes. Later,he founded Kaplan,Strangis and Kaplan,P.A,a law firm,in 1978.
Ambassadors of the United States are persons nominated as ambassadors by the President to serve as United States diplomats to individual nations of the world,to international organizations,and as ambassadors-at-large. Their appointment needs to be confirmed by the United States Senate. An ambassador can be appointed during a recess,but he or she can serve as ambassador only until the end of the next session of Congress unless subsequently confirmed. Ambassadors serve "at the pleasure of the President",meaning they can be dismissed at any time. Appointments change regularly for various reasons,such as reassignment or retirement.

Benjamin Franklin and some of the other Founding Fathers were the earliest United States Ambassadors to France. Julissa Reynoso Pantaleón is a Dominican-American attorney and diplomat who is the Senate-confirmed nominee to be the next United States Ambassador to Spain as well as Andorra. She is the current chief of staff to First Lady Jill Biden. She formerly served as a litigation and international arbitration partner with the international law firm Winston &Strawn LLP. She was previously a partner with Chadbourne &Parke LLP,practicing in the firm's International Arbitration and Latin America groups. Reynoso is also affiliated with the faculty at Columbia University School of Law and the School of International and Public Affairs. From March 2012 until December 2014,she served as United States ambassador to Uruguay. She is a former deputy assistant secretary for the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs at the United States Department of State. President Biden nominated her to be the next United States Ambassador to Spain on July 27,2021,being confirmed on December 18,2021.
