The Republican Party of Armenia is a national-conservative political party in Armenia led by the third president of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan.
Shirak is a province of Armenia. Edmon Hrachiki Marukyan is an Armenian lawyer and politician currently serving as ambassador-at-large of Armenia. He was a member of the National Assembly of Armenia from 2012 to 2021. He was elected to parliament for the first time as an independent in May 2012. He founded the Bright Armenia Party in 2015 and has served as its chairman since. He was reelected to the National Assembly in April 2017, leading the electoral list of the Way Out Alliance, an electoral alliance between Bright Armenia, Civil Contract and the Hanrapetutyun Party. He was elected to parliament again in the 2018 parliamentary elections, leading Bright Armenia's electoral list. Marukyan left parliament after Bright Armenia failed to pass the electoral threshold in the 2021 snap elections. He was appointed ambassador-at-large by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in March 2022.

The Central Electoral Commission of Armenia (CEC) organizes elections and referendums in Armenia. Yerevan City Council elections were held on 23 September 2018. The snap election was trigged after the resignation of former mayor Taron Margaryan amid the aftermath of the 2018 Armenian Velvet Revolution. Well-known comedian and actor Hayk Marutyan, heading the electoral list of the My Step Alliance, was elected to the office of mayor of Yerevan.
On 2 October 2018, protest demonstrations demanding the dissolution of the National Assembly of Armenia were held in the capital city of Yerevan and at other locations in Armenia. The protests were a response to a vote by the National Assembly to block Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan from disbanding the legislature and holding an election. In the evening, the prime minister's supporters gathered at Marshal Baghramyan Avenue, Baghramyan and Karen Demirchyan streets and blockaded the National Assembly building. After endorsement by Pashinyan, protest rallies were also launched at Vanadzor and Gyumri.
