The San Francisco City Championships [1] is a men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1901. [2] [3] It first was played at the California Tennis Club, San Francisco, United States, [4] and then staged annually at various locations until 2019 when it moved to Dolores Park. [2]
The San Francisco City Tournament was inaugurated in 1901 and played at the California Tennis Club the first winner of the singles men's singles competition was George Whitney who defeated Robert Whitney. [2] In the early days of the event a challenge round was in operation, meaning the previous year's winner did not play in the all comers main draw instead they met a challenger in final. [2]
In 1910 a women's singles competition was added to the schedule and the first winner was Ida Mearns who defeated Annabelle Vodden. [2] Until 1945 it was played in a best of five sets format then switched to best of three. [2] In 1930 the event was moved to the Golden Gate Park tennis center until 2018 when it was moved to Dolores Park due to refurbishment of the Golden Gate Park venue. [2]
The tournament was part of the Northern California LTA circuit, and sub circuit of the USNLTA Circuit until 1922. [4] In 1923 after the United States Tennis Association joined the International Lawn Tennis Federation it became an open event on the ILTF World Circuit until 1969 for men and 1972 for women. [4] In 1973 it became part of the ILTF Independent Circuit (those tournaments not part of men's Grand Prix Circuit or women's WTA Tour) until 1977. [4] In 1978 it was further downgraded to a local regional event under the auspices of the Northern California Tennis Association.
The Belgian Open was a women's tennis tournament founded in 1899 as a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament.
The 1974 Commercial Union Assurance Grand Prix was a professional tennis circuit administered by the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF) which served as a forerunner to the current Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour and the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour. The circuit consisted of the four modern Grand Slam tournaments and open tournaments recognised by the ILTF. The season-ending Commercial Union Assurance Masters and Davis Cup Final are included in this calendar but did not count towards the Grand Prix ranking.

The Los Angeles Metropolitan Championships also known as the Los Angeles Municipal Tournament or Los Angeles Metropolitan Tournament was an international men's and women's hard court tennis tournament founded in 1913 as the Los Angeles City Championships. It was first played at the public Griffith Riverside Tennis Facility at Griffith Park, Los Angeles, United States. This international tournament was part of the ILTF World Circuit until 1973 when it was discontinued from that tour.
The New South Wales Hard Court Championships was a men's and women's open tennis tournament founded in 1915, and first held at Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia. It was first organised by the Dubbo District Tennis Association in conjunction with the New South Wales Lawn Tennis Association and was played on clay courts. It was staged as part of ILTF Australasia Circuit a sub circuit of the ILTF World Circuit until 1972, then became part of the ILTF Independent Tour until 1984 and finally part of the Tennis Australia Circuit till 1988 when it was discontinued as a senior event.
