Sandi Hilal (born 1973) is a Palestinian architect, writer, and researcher. Hilal was Head of the Infrastructure and Camp Improvement Program in the West Bank at UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) from 2008 to 2014. [1]

Early life and education

Hilal was born in Beit Sahour, near Bethlehem. [2] She graduated with a Masters from the Sapienza University of Rome and a PhD from the University of Trieste in Transborder policies for daily life. [3] She was then an assistant professor of Fine Art and Urban Studies at the Università Iuav di Venezia. She has since been a visiting professor at Lund University. [4]

DAAR - Decolonising Architecture Art Research

Based in Palestine, DAAR is a collective working on art and architecture, comprising Sandi Hilal, Alessandro Petti and Eyal Weizman. The collective offers new pedagogical practices for teaching, sharing and assembling. Through processes of talking, treasuring and gathering with memories, they enact re-constructions of living spaces, focusing on diasporic existences and refugee camps. Their work extends thinking on intangible heritage: they widen possibilities for re-establishing presence, by exploring provisionality and permanence in the built environment. [5] [6] [7] They re-imagine, re-design and re-purpose Israeli architecture as de-colonial practice: [8] “speculating about the seemingly impossible, the actual transformation of the structures of domination.” [6]

The Campus in Camps project (2012–2016) created a learning and project space in refugee camps in collaboration with Al Quds University (Al Quds/Bard Partnership) and hosted by the Phoenix Center in Dheisheh Refugee Camp in Bethlehem and with the support of the Popular Committees of Southern West Bank refugee camps. Shu'fat School (2014) is a girls school built in Shu'fat refugee camp on the outskirts of Jerusalem. created with the goal of making a collaborative space for learning that encourages participants as active agents in their education. [10]

Architectural Interventions

Concrete Tent, Dheisheh [11] (2015) and (2018) is a project that explores the tent's historic role as a mobile or temporary housing structure. It works to make this solid, using concrete to fix the form of the tent as a more permanent structure. It was exhibited at the Sharjah Architecture Biennial in 2023. [12]

Camps are set up by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip to accommodate Palestinian refugees registered with UNRWA, who fled or were expelled during the 1948 Palestinian expulsion and flight after the 1948 Arab–Israeli War or in the aftermath of the Six-Day War in 1967, and their patrilineal descendants. There are 68 Palestinian refugee camps, 58 official and 10 unofficial, ten of which were established after the Six-Day War while the others were established in 1948 to 1950s.

Tirdad Zolghadr works as a freelance curator, writes for Frieze magazine and has also contributed to Parkett, Bidoun, Cabinet, Afterall, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Straits Times (Singapore) and other publications. He is co-founder of the Tehran-based feminist online magazine Bad Jens (1999) and co-director of "Tehran 1380", a documentary on mass housing estates in Tehran (2001). Since 2004, Zolghadr has curated events at Cubitt London, IASPIS Stockholm, Kunsthalle Geneva, various Tehran artspaces, the UAE pavilion at the Venice Biennale and other venues. He was co-curator of the Taipei Biennial and the International Sharjah biennial 2005. Zolghadr is a founding member of the Shahrzad Design Collective.

Eyal Weizman MBE FBA is a British Israeli architect. He is the director of the research agency Forensic Architecture at Goldsmiths, University of London where he is Professor of Spatial and Visual Cultures and a founding director there of the Centre for Research Architecture at the department of Visual Cultures. In 2019 he was elected Fellow of the British Academy.

Gilbert Hage is a Lebanese photographer. He studied at the Université Saint-Esprit de Kaslik and teaches there since 1990. He also teaches at the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts ALBA. He sometimes collaborates with curator and researcher Ghada Waked, his wife, and is co-publisher and co-editor, with Jalal Toufic, of Underexposed Books.

Decolonizing Architecture Art Residency (DAAR) is an architectural studio, collective of architects and a residency program based in Beit Sahour, Palestine. DAAR was established to work on complex architectural problems in a region with strongly conflicting political forces, and is related to the Decolonizing Architecture Art Research collective.

Nil Yalter is a Turkish contemporary feminist artist. She attended Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey and currently lives and works in Paris. Her work, which is included in many collections and museums, includes not only drawings and photographs, but also videos and performance art. In fact she is the first Turkish female video artist.

Bouchra Khalili is a Moroccan-French visual artist. Raised between Morocco and France, she studied Film at Sorbonne Nouvelle and Fine Arts at École nationale supérieure d'arts de Paris-Cergy. She lives in Berlin, Germany.

Ebtisam Abdulaziz is a contemporary Emirati artist and writer born and raised in Sharjah, UAE. She works with geometry and mathematics to address issues of belonging and identity through installations, performance art and other media.

Alban Muja is a Kosovan contemporary artist and film-maker. In 2019 he represented Kosovo at the 58th Venice Biennale. In his work he is mostly influenced by the social, political and economical transformation processes in wider surrounding region, he investigates history and socio-political themes and links them to his position in Kosovo today. His works cover a wide range of media including video installation, films, drawings, paintings, photographs and performance which have been exhibited extensively in various exhibitions and festivals.
