"Santa Dog '78" was a reworking of the song "Fire" from the original "Santa Dog" double single by the Residents. It was released in December 1978, packaged in a special picture sleeve and sold through mail-order only. The total run was 2700 copies.

Santa's Little Helper is a fictional dog in the American animated television series The Simpsons. He is the pet greyhound of the Simpson family. Friend of the show Stephen Hawking makes his third guest appearance on the show as himself, while Maurice LaMarche does the voice of the Horn Stuffer. Rudy Giuliani makes a guest voice appearance as himself, although not in the original airing. The fan-favorite song "Freak On a Leash" by metal band, Korn, is featured when Santa's Little Helper is trying to find Homer in a corn-stalk maze. The episode was nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award.

Released on the Christmas season of 1972, it is one of the Residents' most notorious releases, with the title track being one of their most well-known songs. Most copies of the EP were sent to close friends, family and celebrity figures such as Frank Zappa and Richard Nixon, the latter refusing his copy.
