The Ghost of Hope is the 44th studio album by American art rock band the Residents. It is based around historical train wrecks. [2]
The Ghost of Hope was The Residents' first non-instrumental album of entirely newly written material since 2008's The Bunny Boy, with a nine-year difference between the two. In between that time, the group toured their 'Randy, Chuck & Bob' trilogy of live shows, starting in 2010 with Talking Light and concluding in July 2016 with Shadowland. [3] During this time, the group released four new full-length albums, Postcards From Patmos (2008), Hades (2009), Lonely Teenager (2011), and Mush-Room (2013). Postcards From Patmos and Hades were entirely instrumental albums created as atmospheric soundtracks for installations. 'Patmos' was walk-in music for the group's 2008 world tour, [4] and 'Hades' was designed for an unrealized art gallery installation. [5]
Lonely Teenager was an adaption of their Talking Light live show and only featured two newly written tracks, both of which had previously appeared in the live show; the rest of the album's material consisted of re-recordings of selections of the band's back catalog. [6] Mush-Room, released in 2013, was an entirely instrumental album written for the Belgian dance group 'Needcompany.' [7] During this time group member Hardy Fox began anonymously releasing solo material under the persona of Charles Bobuck (a character from the Randy, Chuck & Bob trilogy). He put out twelve studio albums between 2012 and 2016.
According to The Residents' spokesperson Homer Flynn, the group had wanted to create a train-inspired album for a long time, and were pushed to do so by one member in particular. Despite this insistence, the group hadn’t been able to find an entry point for the concept until 2013, when someone suggested making an album on historical train wrecks. The group liked the idea and began searching for a book on the subject through Amazon, before eventually landing on Death by Train, a Kindle collection of 50-60 newspaper articles detailing train wrecks written between the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Eventually, the Residents selected 10-12 of these articles to base the album upon. [8] The group loved the elegant language of the period and wanted to contrast it against the horror of the events it was describing. [2]
Speaking in character as "Charles Bobuck", Hardy Fox stated that he had written the music for the album in 2014 and that the recording process was delayed by constant touring commitments. Fox had intended to have the album finished by spring of 2015 and released in September of that year. He had also planned to help his replacement Eric Drew Feldman arrange a live version in the fall of that year, but since their Shadowland tour continued to push The Ghost of Hope aside, Fox left the group out of boredom. [9] The Shadowland tour lasted from May 2014 to July 2016. [3] After the album's release, Fox (again speaking as Bobuck) said, "There are bits and pieces that I remember having written scattered through it. My playing is minimal." [10]
Flynn noted that the album sonically harkened back to their 1979 album Eskimo , particularly the idea of constructing narrative throughout soundscape. The album also contained a booklet detailing the real-life stories behind the songs. [11] The album featured Eric Drew Feldman collaborating with the group. [12] The Ghost of Hope was Hardy Fox's final work with the Residents. [13]
On March 7, 2017, Billboard unveiled a video teaser for the album. The album was also proceeded by a six-show residency at the Blue Note in Tokyo. [11]

Reviewing an early copy of the album for Louder Than War in February 2017, Ian Canty mentioned that "You can't really review this CD as you would a normal LP" and that "you are better off approaching it as one would an audio book of short stories". [14] John Deux for All About the Rock said that the album was "mind blowing" and that he could not express how impressed he was with the album. [15] David Stubbs for Classic Rock gave the album four out of five stars and described it as "a tribute to the reckless optimism of humanity in its ongoing technological aspirations" [1] A few months later, Kieron Tyler, writing in an interview with the group's spokesperson Homer Flynn for The Arts Desk , described The Ghost of Hope as "balanc(ing) the horrific with things that are a little funny". [8]
On March 30, 2017, the Residents staged a live show based on the album at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, California, [2] amidst their In Between Dreams tour, which lasted from March 3, 2017, to February 10, 2019, and featured two songs from The Ghost of Hope. [16]

The Residents are an American art collective and art rock band best known for their avant-garde music and multimedia works. Since their first official release, Meet the Residents (1974), they have released over 60 albums, numerous music videos and short films, three CD-ROM projects, and ten DVDs. They have undertaken seven major world tours and scored multiple films. Pioneers in exploring the potential of CD-ROM and similar technologies, the Residents have won several awards for their multimedia projects. They founded Ralph Records, a record label focusing on avant-garde music, in 1972.
Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen is an American singer and songwriter. He has released 21 studio albums, most of which feature his backing band, the E Street Band. Originally from the Jersey Shore, he is an originator of heartland rock, combining mainstream rock musical styles with narrative songs about working class American life. Corey Scott Feldman is an American actor and musician. As a youth, he became well known for roles in the 1980s in films such as Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), Gremlins (1984), The Goonies (1985), and Stand by Me (1986). In 1987, Feldman co-starred in the horror film The Lost Boys with Corey Haim; they became known as "The Two Coreys" and went on to appear in other films together, including License to Drive (1988) and Dream a Little Dream (1989).
Meet the Residents is the debut studio album by the American art rock group the Residents, released on April 1, 1974, through Ralph Records. Most of the album was recorded throughout 1973 during breaks from production on Vileness Fats, the group's film project and main focus at the time. The album is said to adhere to N. Senada's "Theory of Phonetic Organization," in which music composition should be based on individual sounds rather than traditional musical notes.
Philip Charles Lithman, who performed under the stage name Snakefinger, was an English musician, singer and songwriter. A multi-instrumentalist, he was best known for his guitar and violin work and his collaborations with The Residents.

Bassist Adam Duce, lead guitarists Logan Mader, Ahrue Luster and Phil Demmel, and drummers Tony Costanza, Chris Kontos and Dave McClain are former members of the band; Mader and Kontos toured with the band in 2019 and 2020 as part of the 25th anniversary tour for its first album, Burn My Eyes (1994).
Big Wreck are a Canadian-American rock band formed by Ian Thornley and Brian Doherty in Boston, Massachusetts in 1994. The band was rounded out with David Henning and Forrest Williams. They disbanded in 2002 and Ian Thornley pursued a solo career with his own band Thornley. In 2010, Ian Thornley and Brian Doherty reunited for a cross-Canada tour, playing both Big Wreck and Thornley songs. In 2012, under the name Big Wreck, the band released their third studio album, Albatross. The band has since released the albums Ghosts in 2014, Grace Street in 2017, ...But For the Sun in 2019, and are currently releasing three EPs that will be put together to make their seventh full-length album Big Wreck 7. It is expected to be fully released by 2023.
Eric Drew Feldman is an American musician. Feldman has worked with Captain Beefheart, Fear, Snakefinger, The Residents, Pere Ubu, Pixies, dEUS, Katell Keineg, Frank Black, The Polyphonic Spree, Tripping Daisy, Reid Paley, Charlotte Hatherley, Custard and PJ Harvey.

Story of My Life is Pere Ubu's ninth studio album. Eric Drew Feldman left the band prior to recording, reducing Ubu to a quartet. Prior to touring on this album longtime bassist Tony Maimone left as well. This is the final release to feature both Maimome and founding drummer Scott Krauss. According to a conversation between David Thomas and Frank Black included on the b-side of the "Kathleen" single, the album's working title was Johnny Rivers Live At The Whiskey A Go Go.

It highlights the 10 years of his solo career after disbanding the influential alternative rock band, the Pixies in 1993, as well as songs from the many albums he created with backing band "the Catholics". Included also is material from his next solo album, Bluefinger, in the form of a hidden track, "Threshold Apprehension". Each release comes with a second disc of live recordings, which varies depending on the region the album was released in. All live tracks were recorded during Black's fall 2006 North American tour.

The Bunny Boy is an album by American art rock band the Residents. Released on September 1, 2008, it is a concept album. According to the group's blog, the music was intended to be similar to their previous albums Duck Stab, The Commercial Album and Demons Dance Alone and contains "19 fast paced songs" about "[o]bsession, insanity and the coming Apocalypse". In addition to The Residents, frequent collaborators Nolan Cook, Carla Fabrizio and Joshua Raoul Brody also appear on the album.
"Shadowland" is a 2010 comic book storyline published by Marvel Comics, focusing on Daredevil and other "street-level" superheroes in the Marvel Universe. The storyline started in the Daredevil comic and was expanded upon in the Shadowland five-issue mini series as well as four tie-in mini series, four one-shots, and two issues of Thunderbolts. The storyline was collected into seven individual hard cover and soft cover Trade paperbacks in 2011.

Hardy Winfred Fox, Jr. was an American musician. He was co-founder of the band The Residents as well as their primary composer. From 1982 to 2016 he was the president of The Cryptic Corporation. During his 44 years with The Residents, and after leaving the band in 2016, he recorded as a solo artist under many names, such as Charles Bobuck, Combo de Mechanico, Sonido de la Noche, Black Tar, and more. His newer solo albums were published by Austrian record label Klanggalerie.
