Santanu Bose is an Indian-theatre director and drama teacher. He has worked extensively on multicultural issues in collaborative process. [1] He is the dean of the academic affairs [2] and associate professor, World Drama of National School of Drama, (NSD) New Delhi. [3] [4]

Early life and education

Bose studied comparative literature at Jadavpur University, Kolkata in 1992. He started his theatre career with an apprenticeship under Tripti Mitra. He further studied design and direction at National School of Drama, New Delhi in 1992–1995. In 1996, he was awarded Charles Wallace Fellowship and went on to study acting at Drama Studio London. There he acted in the play Our Man with an international cast under the direction of Peter Layton.

Career

He came back to India and started working as a lecturer in art direction at Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata and later he joined the National School of Drama as assistant professor of World drama. [5] He has also taught as visiting faculty at Rabindra Bharati University, University of Hyderabad, Jamia Milia University, and Indira Gandhi Nation Open University.[ citation needed ]

Bose received critical acclaim as an actor in the short film Sunder Jeebon, directed by Sandeep Chaterjee. [6] He has done research and sections of dialogue for the Film "Name of a River" by Anup Singh [7] [8] and done Art Direction for the film Reaching Silence by Jahar Kanungo. [9]

He has also created over 60 theatre pieces in India, England, Australia, Germany, France and Belgium.[ citation needed ] In 2000, he founded Monirath Theatre Group, in Calcutta. The German-Indian theatre collaborations with the Goethe Institute Calcutta have been an important part in the work done by his group. [10] Some of the notable works are:

Bansi Kaul was an Indian theatre director and the founder of Rang Vidushak, a theatre group in Bhopal. He was a recipient of the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honor, in 2014, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1995. Some of his notable plays included Aala Afsar, Kahan Kabir, and Sidhi Dar Sidhi urf Tukke pe Tukka. Prasanna, is a major Indian theatre director and playwright from Karnataka. He is one of the pioneers of modern Kannada theatre. He graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD). He founded Samudaya and gave a creative direction to Kannada theatre in the 1970s with other activists. Prasanna lives in Heggodu in Karnataka. He is known for his organisational skills and new ideas and innovations in theatre. He is a Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee. He has directed plays for National School of Drama, Ninasam, Rangamandal-Bhopal, Rangayana and worked with many theatre organizations of India. He elected as National President of Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA).

Ebrahim Alkazi was an Indian theatre director and drama teacher. A rigid disciplinarian, he instilled in his acting students an awe and reverence that they still carry with them, with several of them having had the privilege of continuing the practice and training in the NSD Repertory Company, an introduction made to the National School of Drama by Alkazi. His standards later became very influential. He also remained the Director of National School of Drama, New Delhi (1962–1977) He was also a noted art connoisseur, collector and gallery owner, and founded the Art Heritage Gallery in Delhi with his wife, Roshen Alkazi.

Ratan Thiyam is an Indian playwright and theatre director, and the winner of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987, one of leading figures of the "theatre of roots" movement in Indian theatre, which started in the 1970s. Also known as Thiyam Nemai, Ratan Thiyam is known for writing and staging plays that use ancient Indian theatre traditions and forms in a contemporary context. A former painter, and proficient in direction, design, script and music, Thiyam is often considered one of leading contemporary theatre gurus.

Ram Gopal Bajaj is an Indian theatre director, academician, and a Hindi film actor. He has also been a faculty member and a former Director of National School of Drama, New Delhi.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Manohar Singh</span> Indian actor (1938–2002)

Manohar Singh was an Indian theatre actor-director and character actor in Hindi films. He is best known for his performances in films such as Party (1984) and Daddy (1989). Starting his acting career from theatre, he went on to become a theatre director and later the chief of National School of Drama Repertory Company, 1976 to 1988, before switching to cinema. As a theatre actor his best known performances were in Tughlaq, directed by Ebrahim Alkazi; Himmat Mai and Begum Barve by Nissar and Amal Allana.

Amal Allana is an Indian theatre director, scenic designer and costume designer and presently she is in her second consecutive term as the Chairperson of National School of Drama, India's premier institute of Theatre training, she also runs the Dramatic Art and Design Academy (DADA), New Delhi, with her husband Nissar Allana, which they co-founded in 2000.

Circle Theatre Company is a theatre group in India. The group has its headquarters in Delhi.

Founded in 1998, Budhan Theatre is an Indian theatre group composed of members of the Chhara tribe, one of India's groups of denotified or "criminal" tribal people in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The Budhan Theatre was founded by Prof. Ganesh Devy G. N. Devy, a renowned linguist and professor of English Literature and Smt. Mahasweta Devi Mahasweta Devi a noted Bangla writer and Magsaysay awardee.

Rita Ganguly is an exponent in the Indian classical arts. An accomplished dancer, musician and vocalist, she was honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2000 and with the Padma Shri in 2003. She is the mother of actress Meghna Kothari and the younger sister of the famous Ravindra Sangeet singer Gita Ghatak.
