Rabindra Bharati University is a public research university in Kolkata, India. It was founded on May 8, 1962, under the Rabindra Bharati Act of the Government of West Bengal in 1961, to mark the birth centenary of the poet Rabindranath Tagore. [3] It is located at the Tagore family home, Jorasanko Thakur Bari. The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Performing Arts and Visual Arts under the Faculty of Fine Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and other subjects under the Faculty of Arts. [4]

The current interim Vice-Chancellor of the university is Subhro Kamal Mukherjee, former Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court.

Tagore museum

The Jorasanko Thakur Bari is the ancestral home of the Tagore family. [5] The first non-European Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was born here.

Suchitra Mitra was an Indian singer, composer, artist exponent of Rabindra Sangeet or the songs of Bengal's poet laureate Rabindranath Tagore, professor, and the first woman Sheriff of Kolkata. As an academic, she remained a professor and the Head of Rabindra Sangeet Department at the Rabindra Bharati University until 1984. Mitra was a playback singer in Bengali films and was associated for many years with the Indian People's Theatre Association.

The Tagore family has been one of the leading families of Kolkata, India, and is regarded as one of the key influencers during the Bengali Renaissance. The family has produced several people who have contributed substantially in the fields of business, social and religious reformation, literature, art, politics and music. The most prominent figures of this family include Dwarkanath Tagore, a pioneering industrialist; Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel laureate in literature; Abanindranath Tagore, a distinguished artist and more.

Dwijen Mukhopadhyay was an Indian composer and singer whose musical career spanned six decades. He was a performer of Rabindrasangeet, Bengali basic songs, Bengali and Hindi film songs. He recorded more than 1500 songs, of which about 800 are songs of Rabindranath Tagore. He also directed music in Bengali feature films and composed music for popular Bengali basic songs.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bubu Eklund</span> Bengali singer (born 1951)

Bubu Eklund is a Bengali singer and exponent of Rabindra Sangeet based in Lund, Sweden where she leads the Lund India Choir through which she plays a significant role in the spread of Rabindra Sangeet and the ideologies of Rabindranath Tagore in Sweden. She has been a student of legendary Rabindra Sangeet exponents Suchitra Mitra and Kanika Bandopadhyay while attending the Rabitirtha Institute in Kolkata, India. She is the daughter of noted Indian painter and commercial artist Annada Munshi and Jayati Devi, the first Bengali lady to appear as the model in any advertising venture of the Tea Board in India. Her major breakthrough was the series of concerts titled A Swedish View of Rabindranath Tagore, along with Per Olov Henricson. Eklund started the International Tagore Choir in Lund with her husband Lars Eklund in 2011, where Swedish people are trained to sing Rabindra Sangeet. She lives in Lund, Sweden from 1983 with her husband Lars Eklund.
