Sarah Abd Elbaki (born c.1997) is a Syrian rugby player, coach and referee. [1] Captain of the Syrian women's team, Abd Elbaki is "an influential figure in women's rugby in the Arab world". [2]
Abd Elbaki started playing rugby in 2017. [1] In 2020 she became the first woman to referee a domestic 15s match. [3] She is also an assistant coach for the Syrian men's rugby team. [1] In March 2021 she was named as one of 12 recipients of the 2021 World Rugby Women’s Executive Leadership Scholarship. [1]
The Syria national football team represents Syria in international football and is controlled by the Syrian Arab Federation for Football, the governing body for football in Syria. Syria has never qualified for the World Cup finals but did reach the fourth qualification round in 2018. The team is currently banned by FIFA from playing at home, as they have not hosted a game since December 2010. Internationally, Syria won the 2012 WAFF Championship, 1957 Pan Arab Games and the 1987 Mediterranean Games.

The idea of rewarding excellence in rugby was disclosed in 2001 following the Annual Meeting of the International Rugby Board Council in Copenhagen, and the first ceremony was first awarded later that year. The International Rugby Players' Association also gives out awards, for Try of the Year, and Special Merit, as a part of the programme. As of 2021, they now present Women's Try of the Year.

Syrian High Rugby Committee was fully affiliated to Asia Rugby in 2015, and became an associate member of World Rugby in 2022. Its headquarters is in Al-Fayhaa Sports Complex, Damascus.
