Sarah Shantz-Smiley (born 24 August 1982) is a Canadian-born Icelandic ice hockey player and coach. [1] She has been a member of the Iceland women's national team since 2011, [2] the same year she was named the Icelandic Women's Ice Hockey Player of the Year. [3]
Having played for the University of Windsor in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (now U Sports), Shantz-Smiley graduated in 2005. Following university, she competed with the now-defunct Montreal Axion in the original National Women's Hockey League. During the 2005–06 NWHL season, Smiley appeared in 35 games, logging 4 goals (of which three were game-winning goals) [4] and 4 assists for 8 points. [5]
In 2006, she signed on to play in the Icelandic Women's Hockey League. [4]
In 2008, Shantz-Smiley would play for a club team in Australia. Smiley has also played for the Iceland national women's team competing in Group B at the 2012 IIHF Women's World Championship Division II in Seoul, South Korea. During Iceland's first game of the event, Shantz-Smiley earned an assist on a goal scored by Birna Baldursdóttir. [6]
In December 2006, Shantz-Smiley was hired as the head coach of the Iceland women's national team. [7] In 2008, she became the first woman to be the head coach of a men's Ice Hockey team in Iceland when she was hired as the head coach of Skautafélag Akureyrar men's team. [8] Shantz-Smiley also spent team coaching a youth team in the community of Akureyri in 2010. [9] [10]
In 2011, Iceland was ranked 29th in the world, [11] and was the host country for the 2011 IIHF Women's World Championship Division IV. During that same year, Smiley worked with Deirdre Norman from the Women of Winter hockey organization in Toronto and helped launch a women's division in the Iceland International Ice Hockey Tournament.
Shantz-Smiley received an Icelandic citizenship in 2011. [12]
Geraldine Heaney is an Irish-Canadian ice hockey coach and former defenceman. She played 18 seasons and over 1,000 games with the Toronto Aeros organization, won six Ontario provincial championships and was named Ontario Women's Hockey Association (OWHA) most valuable defenceman on three occasions. The Aeros retired her jersey number 91 in 2006. Internationally, Heaney was a member of the Canadian national team in the first seven Women's World Championships, winning gold each time. She is a two-time Olympian, winning silver at the inaugural tournament in 1998 tournament, and gold in 2002. On June 14, 2022, she became the head coach of the Toronto Six of the Premier Hockey Federation.
Danielle Goyette is a Canadian former ice hockey player who played on the Canada women's national ice hockey team. In 2013, she was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame. In 2017, she was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Goyette was made a member of the Order of Hockey in Canada in 2018.
Caroline Ouellette OC is a Canadian retired ice hockey player and current associate head coach of the Concordia Stingers women's ice hockey program. She was a member of the Canadian national women's ice hockey team and a member of Canadiennes de Montreal in the Canadian Women's Hockey League. Among her many accomplishments are four Olympic gold medals, 12 IIHF Women's World Championship medals, 12 Four Nations Cup medals and four Clarkson Cup championships.
Meghan Christina Agosta is a Canadian women's ice hockey forward, who last played for the Montreal Stars of the Canadian Women's Hockey League. Agosta plays for the Canada women's national ice hockey team and is a gold (3) and silver medallist at the Winter Olympics of 2006 Turin, 2010 Vancouver, 2014 Sochi, and 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. At the 2010 Winter Olympics, Agosta was named MVP of the Women's Hockey Tournament. She is a multi-medallist at the Women's World Championships with two gold medals and six silvers.
Natalie Rose Darwitz is an American ice hockey executive and retired player, currently serving as general manager of the Minnesota PWHL team in the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL).
The Turkish women's national ice hockey team represents Turkey at the International Ice Hockey Federation's World Women's Ice Hockey Championship Division IV. Meghan Duggan is an American former ice hockey forward and director of player development for the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League. She played for the United States at the 2010 Winter Olympics and 2014 Winter Olympics, winning two silver medals; she was the captain of the U.S. team at the 2018 Winter Olympics, where she won a gold medal. She also represented the United States at eight Women's World Championships, capturing seven gold medals and one silver medal. Duggan played collegiate hockey with the Wisconsin Badgers between 2006 and 2011. After her senior season (2010–11), Duggan was named the winner of the Patty Kazmaier Award, presented annually to the top women's ice hockey player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). After her career at Wisconsin, Duggan was the team's all-time leading scorer. She was drafted 8th overall by the Boston Blades in the 2011 CWHL Draft.
Monique Edith Lamoureux-Morando, previously known as Monique Lamoureux-Kolls, is a former American ice hockey player, author, gender equity advocate, and co-founder of the Lamoureux Foundation. She scored the game-tying goal in the final of the 2018 Winter Olympics before her twin sister Jocelyne scored the last shootout goal of the game to clinch the gold medal.

The 2020 Women's World Ice Hockey Championships were the 22nd such series of tournaments organised by the International Ice Hockey Federation. Teams were supposed to play at six tiers of competition. However, four of the six tournaments were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The competition also served as qualifications for the 2021 competition and finalized seeding for the 2022 Winter Olympics qualification.

Halldóra Vanda Sigurgeirsdóttir is an Icelandic former multi-sport athlete who played both for the Icelandic national football team and the Icelandic national basketball team. In 2001 she became the first woman in Iceland to coach a men's football team when she was hired as the manager of Neisti Hofsósi. In 2020, she was awarded the Order of the Falcon for her work towards women's football. In 2021, she became the first female chairman of the Football Association of Iceland.
