It is situated in the Charsadda District and located on the banks of the Kabul River some 20 kilometres north on Peshawar Road. It is a popular site for tourists from Peshawar and Charsadda, especially famous for fresh fish eating. [1]

The city was an important trading centre during the Mughal era before serving as the winter capital of the Afghan Durrani Empire from 1757 until the city was captured by the Sikhs in 1818, who were then followed by the British in 1849.
