Sasolburgh High School is a public high school, serving grades 8 to 12, in the town of Sasolburg, South Africa.

Facilities

Sasolburg High School was the first school with a language lab, and also the first to have a learning lab in South Africa.[ citation needed ]

The school offers several sports, including hockey, netball, and rugby football, and a traditional local rivalry is maintained with Technical High School Sasolburg, often abbreviated as HTS. The school tends to focus more on hockey and rugby football, as a result, in late 2019 to early 2020 the school spent an estimated total of R6 million on an artificial hockey turf.[ citation needed ]

Firearm Incident

On 20 September 2013 a 15 year old student brought a firearm to school, which belonged to his grandfather, and began threatening other students. While attempting to intervene, a male teacher was wounded in the right leg after the gun fired by mistake. The student fled but was later found with the firearm in his possession. [1] The teacher was taken to a nearby hospital in a stable condition and underwent surgery at Vanderbijlpark's Mediclinic Emfuleni. The pupil was arrested and psychologically evaluated before appearing in child justice court on 23 September. He was later released and placed in the care of his parents. [2] [3]

2015 in South Africa saw a number of social and political protests and movements form. At President Jacob Zuma's 2015 State of the Nation Address, the president was interrupted by an opposition party, the Economic Freedom Fighters, who demanded that he pay back the money used on his Nkandla homestead. South Africa also saw new xenophobic uprisings taking place, mainly targeted towards Africans from other countries. Foreigners were beaten, robbed and murdered during the attacks. The social protest Rhodes Must Fall started in 2015 at the University of Cape Town to protest for the removal of statues erected in South Africa during the colonial era depicting some of the well known colonists who settled in South Africa. In education, South Africa recorded a drop in its matric pass rate from 2013 to 2014. The protest #FeesMustFall was started towards the end of the year and achieved its primary goal of stopping an increase in university fees for 2016. South Africa also saw the discovery of Homo naledi in 2015. The South African national rugby union team came third in the 2015 Rugby World Cup and Trevor Noah started hosting The Daily Show on Comedy Central.

Brackenfell High School is a public, co-educational high school in Brackenfell, Western Cape, South Africa. It was established on 26 January 1976 on a 1-acre (0.40 ha) plot of land donated by Janet Brink, the widow of Andries Brink.

Arming teachers is equipping teachers in preschool through secondary school with firearms with the intent to prevent casualties from school shootings. Such proposals have engendered public debate regarding with whom the responsibility for providing a safe environment lies, and whether it would reduce or escalate the risk of shootings. School shootings, and proposals to arm teachers, are most common in the United States, but proposals have also been made in Israel, Kenya, Pakistan, South Africa, and Thailand.
