General elections were held in Niue on 7 June, 2008. They were initially expected to be held in April, but were delayed until June 2008. Niue has a 20-member legislative assembly, called the Niue Assembly, whose members are elected by approximately 600 registered voters. The assembly consists of 20 total members, 6 elected on a common roll and 14 representatives of the villages

Hima Ikimotu Douglas is a Niuean broadcaster, politician, and diplomat. He is Speaker of the Niue Assembly.
Sir Toke Tufukia Talagi was a Niuean politician, diplomat, and statesman. He served as Premier of Niue from 2008 to 2020.
Sam Pata Emani Tagelagi was a Niuean politician and elder. Tagelagi served as the first Speaker of the Niue Assembly from 1976 to 1993.
Dalton Emani Makamau Tagelagi is a Niuean politician and Premier of Niue since June 2020. He was elected premier by the Niue Legislative Assembly on 11 June 2020, defeating O'Love Jacobsen by 13 votes to 7.

General elections were held in Niue on 30 May 2020 for the 20 members of the Niue Assembly. The election resulted in the defeat of Premier Toke Talagi, who lost his seat. Fifteen incumbents were re-elected, including three who were unopposed. In Mutalu, a tie between two candidates resulted in one being elected by a coin toss.

Richard Hipa is a member of the Niue Assembly, and was first elected at the 2020 elections. While he initially planned to run in the constituency of Alofi north, he ultimately ran as a candidate on the common roll. Hipa received 440 votes in the election, which gave him the most votes in the election. This led to speculation that he would put his name forward as a contender for Premier, something Hipa confirmed, but ultimately he did not put his name forward and the election was contested between Dalton Tagelagi and O'Love Jacobsen.

Moira Zeta Enetama is a Niuean curator and cultural activist, who, as of 2021, was acting director of the Ministry of Social Services in Niue. She is also the Director of Tāoga Niue Museum. She is a former director of Taoga Niue, the governmental department that oversees cultural activities and preservation. During her directorship of Taoga Niue, Cyclone Heta destroyed Huanaki Cultural Centre & Museum, a disaster that Enetama described as "devastating". She has been outspoken on the benefit television can bring to ensure survival of the Niuean language.
Niue competed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England from 28 July to 8 August 2022. It was Niue's sixth appearance at the Games.
The 17th Niue Assembly was a term of the Niue Assembly. Its composition was determined by the 2020 election, held on 30 May 2020.
General elections were held in Niue on 29 April 2023. The election was originally planned to be held early, in late February or early March.
