Dalton Emani Makamau Tagelagi [1] (born 5 June 1968) is a Niuean politician and Prime Minister of Niue (also still referred to as the Premier) since June 2020. He was elected premier by the Niue Legislative Assembly on 11 June 2020,defeating O'Love Jacobsen by 13 votes to 7. [2]
Tagelagi is the son of Sam Pata Emani Tagelagi,who served as Speaker of the Niue Legislative Assembly from 1976 to 1993. [2]
He has competed in bowls for Niue,at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow [3] and the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. [4] In 2022,he competed in the men's pairs and the men's fours at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. [5] [6]
Tagelagi was first elected to the Niue Assembly at the 2008 Niuean general election. Following the 2014 Niuean general election he was appointed Minister of Infrastructure. [7] [8] He was re-elected at the 2017 Niuean general election, [9] [10] and subsequently served as Minister for the Environment,Natural Resources,Agriculture,Forestry and Fisheries. [2] [11] As Environment Minister he represented Niue at the 2019 United Nations Climate Change Conference,calling for rich nations to show greater ambition. [12]
He was re-elected in the 2020 Niuean general election and subsequently elected premier. After being elected he announced that his first priority would be investigating government finances. [13] As Premier his government ratified the PACER Plus regional trade agreement. [14] During the COVID-19 pandemic he negotiated a one-way travel-bubble allowing Niueans to travel to New Zealand, [15] and oversaw a vaccination program which saw Niue gain full herd immunity to the virus. [16] [17] In November 2021 he began a one-year term as Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific. [18] [19] His tenure concluded in June 2022,and he was succeeded by Tuimalealiʻifano Vaʻaletoʻa Sualauvi II. [20]
He was re-elected unopposed to the Assembly at the 2023 election. [21] He was subsequently re-elected as Premier,defeating O'Love Jacobsen 16 votes to 4. [22] He appointed his Cabinet on 12 May 2023,the first gender-balanced Cabinet in Niuean history. [23] [24]
General elections were held in Niue on 7 June,2008. They were initially expected to be held in April,but were delayed until June 2008. Niue has a 20-member legislative assembly,called the Niue Assembly,whose members are elected by approximately 600 registered voters. The assembly consists of 20 total members,6 elected on a common roll and 14 representatives of the villages

Tauveve O’Love Jacobsen is a Niuean politician and diplomat. She served as Niue's High Commissioner to New Zealand from 2011 to 2017. Her predecessor was Sisilia Talagi,Niue's first female diplomat and High Commissioner. She had previously served as a member of the Niue Assembly and a minister in Toke Talagi's government. She was previously a long-standing leading figure in the informal parliamentary Opposition to Young Vivian's government. She was,from 2008 to 2011,Minister of Health,Minister of Public Works,Minister of Women's Affairs,and Minister in charge of the Niue Power Corporation. She had previously been Minister of Education,Health,Environment,Training and Development. Additionally,Jacobsen is a member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association,and Patroness of the Niuean Volleyball Association.
Sir Toke Tufukia Talagi was a Niuean politician,diplomat,and statesman. He served as Premier of Niue from 2008 to 2020.
Sam Pata Emani Tagelagi was a Niuean politician and elder. Tagelagi served as the first Speaker of the Niue Assembly from 1976 to 1993.

General elections were held in Niue on 30 May 2020 for the 20 members of the Niue Assembly. The election resulted in the defeat of Premier Toke Talagi,who lost his seat. Fifteen incumbents were re-elected,including three who were unopposed. In Mutalu,a tie between two candidates resulted in one being elected by a coin toss.

Richard Hipa is a member of the Niue Assembly,and was first elected at the 2020 elections. While he initially planned to run in the constituency of Alofi north,he ultimately ran as a candidate on the common roll. Hipa received 440 votes in the election,which gave him the most votes in the election. This led to speculation that he would put his name forward as a contender for Premier,something Hipa confirmed,but ultimately he did not put his name forward and the election was contested between Dalton Tagelagi and O'Love Jacobsen.

Niue competed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham,England from 28 July to 8 August 2022. It was Niue's sixth appearance at the Games.
