Savio Oliver Ignatius Rodrigues (born 31 July 1976) is an Indian journalist and politician based in Velim, Goa. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of Goa Chronicle, a news portal. Rodrigues is also a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Goa (BJP) and a former spokesperson of the party. [2] [3]

Early life

Savio Oliver Ignatius Rodrigues [4] was born on 31 July 1976 [5] in Mumbai [6] to Ignatius Rosario Rodrigues. He claims to profess Christian faith but with "Hindu roots". [7] He received graduation in Bachelor of Arts, and continued with Bachelor of Laws (B.A LL.B) (first year) at the Government Law College, Mumbai. [8]

Career

Rodrigues began his career at the age of 20 in the fields of journalism, communications and entrepreneurship. During his early years he built his career in media, environmental sciences and technology in India. His business ventures include Goa Chronicle , Kaydence Media Ventures, [9] Incubees, and Kianna Media Ventures. [10] During its early years, Goa Chronicle, now owned by Kaydence Media Ventures and a part of ITV Network Group found itself struggling in the state of Goa. [11] [12] Rodrigues was also a television host of the TV show, The Goa Chronicle Show (2021) which aired on NewsX. [13] He was also a columnist for The Indian Express [14] and a panelist on television and web shows. [15]

Politics (2014–present)

Rodrigues joined Goa Su-Raj Party and was appointed as a party secretary and the youth affairs president. He then unsuccessfully contested in the 2014 Indian general election from the Mormugao. [4] [16] Rodrigues later joined the Indian National Congress where he served as a vice president of the Goa Congress minority cell. He resigned from the party on 17 March 2017. [17]

On 4 January 2022, Rodrigues joined the Bhartiya Janata Party in the presence of Goa unit president, Sadanand Tanavade. [18] He then unsuccessfully contested in the 2022 Goa Legislative Assembly election from the Velim Assembly constituency and lost to AAP candidate, Cruz Silva with a margin of 4,059 votes.

Personal life

On 13 February 2004, he married researcher Myrtle Rodrigues (née Fernandes). [19] [20] The couple has two daughters, Kaydence and Kianna. [21] He currently resides at Baga, Velim. [22] Rodrigues spent most of his younger years studying and living in Dubai. [23]

Controversy

On 14 April 2011, Rodrigues filed a petition in the Bombay High Court at Panjim, [24] seeking a ban on the release of the 2011 Hindi-language movie, Dum Maaro Dum, claiming that it showed the state of Goa in bad light. He also objected to the constitution of a seven member committee to examine the movie before its released in theatres. [25] On 19 April, the court dismissed Rodrigues's petition, allowing the film to be released. [26]

Bhagat Singh Koshyari is an Indian politician who served as the 22nd governor of Maharashtra from 2019 to 2023. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Velim, Goa</span> Village in Goa, India

Velim is a large village situated in Salcete, neighbouring Quepem taluka, and falls under South Goa district, in the coastal state of Goa. It has access to the Arabian Sea via the Sal river that flows through it and shares its borders with neighbouring villages and towns of Assolna, Ambelim, Betul, and Cuncolim. The village consists of 22 hamlets or subdivisions which have been organized into 9 wards. As of 2020, the village has a total population of about 8600 residents residing in 2568 households. The organisation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is based upon the Constitution of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The organisation of the BJP is strictly hierarchical, with the president being the highest authority in the party. The party is considered to be a cadre-based party that draws from the Hindutva-based ideology of its parent organisation, the RSS.

The elections in 2012 were scheduled for seven Vidhan Sabhas and several local elections were also conducted. The 14th presidential election to elect the 13th president of the republic was also held in 2012. The tenure of the legislative assemblies of Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand were to expire during the year. The Election Commission of India issued the dates for the elections in Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Goa to take place in the first quarter of the year. Whereas the elections were held in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat in the last quarter of the year.

Farrel Benito Furtado E Gracias is an Indian politician and teacher who is a former member of the Goa Legislative Assembly, representing the Velim Assembly constituency from 1989 to 1994. Furtado holds the distinction of being the first and only woman legislator to be elected from the Velim constituency.
