Sawna Lakra (born 1941) was an Indian politician from the Indian National Congress, elected to the state legislature in Jharkhand. He was arrested for murdering a youth to protect the family honour in May 2011. He died on 14 October 2019.

Arrest for Murder

In June 2011, Lakra was indicted for ordering the abduction and murder of Avinash Tiwari, a local youth who had wanted to marry his granddaughter Usha Lakra. [1]

On 27 April, Avinash had come to Lakra's farmhouse at Chota Kawali, about 2 km from Bargama to meet Usha. He was caught and confined by Lakra's bodyguard Janak Mahto. Later, he was allegedly shot dead by henchman Gopi Kachchap, in Lakra's presence. [2] The body was disposed of in a culvert near Lodhma. [3]

Lakra went underground immediately after police investigations. He surrendered only after a month. [4]

After his arrest, Lakra was to be held in the Birsa Munda Central Jail but he immediately claimed cardiac problems, and was sent to the intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) of the premier Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS). [5]

Amarmani Tripathi is a politician from Eastern Uttar Pradesh. He has been a MLA from Nautanwa, Uttar Pradesh four times. He and his wife are currently serving a life sentence in the Madhumita Shukla murder case with conspiracy to murder. He had earlier been a state Minister in the state of Uttar Pradesh with the Samajwadi Party under Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Israel's tourism minister Rehavam Ze'evi was assassinated shortly before 7 am (GMT+2) on Wednesday, 17 October 2001 at the former Hyatt Hotel in Jerusalem by a squad of Palestinians acting on behalf of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine militant organization. Ze'evi was the first Israeli minister to be assassinated since the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin and the most senior Israeli person to be killed by Palestinian militants during the entire Arab–Israeli conflict.

Supreme Court of India, in its judgement dated 10 July 2013 while disposing the Lily Thomas v. Union of India case, ruled that any Member of Parliament (MP), Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) or Member of a Legislative Council (MLC) who is convicted of a crime and given a minimum of two years' imprisonment, loses membership of the House with immediate effect. This is in contrast to the earlier position, wherein convicted members held on to their seats until they exhausted all judicial remedy in lower, state and supreme court of India. Further, Section 8(4) of the Representation of the People Act, which allowed elected representatives three months to appeal their conviction, was declared unconstitutional by the bench of Justice A. Yogendra Sao is an Indian politician from the Indian National Congress party. He is a former agriculture minister in the Government of Jharkhand, where under his leadership Jharkhand state got first rank for pulse seed production across India. He was the representative from Barkagaon constituency in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly during 2009-2014. Former minister fought for the right of displaced people and organised a series of protests by the residents of Barkagaon and Keredari Block under the leadership of Mr. Sao resulted in the raising of compensation rate payable to the owners of the land acquired by NTPC. The negotiations began at Rs. 3 lakh per acre and were finally settled at Rs. 15 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh per acre way back in 2015 through a tripartite agreement signed among the NTPC, State Government and the agitating villagers represented by Sao.

Haji Hussain Ansari was an Indian politician and a leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). He served as Minister of Minority Welfare and Registration Department in the Government of Jharkhand since 28 January 2020. Ansari was the first and only Muslim to become minister in the state of Jharkhand. He was elected to the Jharkhand Assembly on the JMM ticket four times from Madhupur Assembly constituency in 1995, 2000, 2009 and 2019 respectively. He also acted as the leader of the opposition in 2004.

Sanjeev Singh is an Indian politician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was an elected member of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly from the Jharia constituency in Dhanbad district. In the 2014 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, he defeated his nearest competitor, an Indian National Congress candidate, by more than 32,000 votes. He is currently serving a sentence in prison.

Vishwanath Vaishampayan was an Indian revolutionary and member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association.

Kamlesh Tiwari was an Indian politician who founded the Hindu Samaj Party in 2017.

On 17 June 2019, 24-year-old Tabrez Ansari was attacked by a lynch mob in Jharkhand, India. Ansari, a Muslim, was tied to a tree, brutally beaten and forced to chant Hindu religious slogans. He died four days later. The incident came to light after a video of the lynching went viral. The attackers accused him of bike theft. India's Prime Minister commented on this lynching in the Parliament of India.

Sardar was a member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, a political party. Sardar was elected MLA for the second assembly of Jharkhand in 2005 on the ticket of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha for the first time.
