The Scarborough gas field is a natural gas field located in the Indian Ocean north-west of Exmouth on the coast of Western Australia. [1] The total Contingent Resource of the Scarborough gas field is around 7.3 trillion cubic feet. [2] In 2018 Woodside bought ExxonMobil's 50% share of the retention lease, adding to the 25% it had acquired from BHP in 2016. [3] Woodside now owns 75% of the retention lease and are operator of the joint venture, with BHP retaining the final 25%. [4] On 7 April 2022, the company announced that final Australian federal and state government approvals for the project had been received. [5]
The Scarborough gas field is currently not a producing asset. Woodside is proposing to develop the Scarborough resource with 12 subsea, high-rate gas wells tied back to a semi-submersible platform moored in 900 m of water. The ~20,000 t topsides has processing facilities for gas dehydration and compression to transport the gas through a ~400 km pipeline to the Woodside operated Pluto LNG facility. [2]
The Scarborough resource has been fully appraised and the reservoir consists of excellent quality sands which support recoverable volumes in excess of 0.5 Tcf per well. The Scarborough gas reservoir is relatively shallow at only 900 – 1,000 m below the mudline. The lean reservoir gas is classified as ‘sweet’ with no detectable H₂S and only trace levels of CO₂. [2] However, sources other than Woodside have contradicted this finding and established that the field would result in an additional 1.6 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions over its lifetime - the equivalent of 15 coal fired power plants. [6] Other sources have suggested that no new oil or gas resources should be developed for Australia to have a chance of meeting their climate goals. [7]
A phased development drilling program is proposed, with seven wells available at ready for start-up (RFSU). Given the shallow depth below the mudline and anticipated strong aquifer support, a combination of horizontal and high angle wells have been designed with maximum well lengths of ~2,500 m. The well and completion designs align with Woodside's extensive development experience offshore north-western Australia. [2]
The proposed carbon steel trunkline will be ~400 km long, significantly shorter than recently constructed offshore gas pipelines in the region. Woodside's ongoing subsea development programs in the North West Shelf and Exmouth area provide contemporary analogues for cost and execution schedule estimates. The seabed transition zone from the deep water to the North West Shelf is well known to Woodside after previous successful projects in the area. In preparation for future expansion, Pluto LNG constructed a shore crossing for a second trunkline. [2]

The onshore development concept is a brownfield expansion of the existing Woodside operated Pluto LNG facility. LNG expansion projects have traditionally provided cost competitive new LNG capacity into the market and attractive returns on investment. Extensive onshore development studies for Pluto LNG expansion were undertaken in 2010/11, including a complete front-end engineering and design phase for a second LNG train at Pluto. Previous studies combined with Woodside's 2017 market engagement on LNG expansion, means that Woodside is well placed to assess and estimate the cost of an LNG expansion train for Scarborough. [2]
The composition of the Scarborough gas itself is well suited to the Pluto LNG plant which is designed for lean gas and nitrogen removal. Pre-investment in the Pluto LNG site for future expansion and existing environmental approvals for a second LNG train further de-risks the project. [2]
The cost estimate of $8.5 – $9.7 billion (100% project) is a real terms 2018, Class 0, pre-concept select phase cost estimate and includes a 25% contingency. Activities prior to final investment decision are expected to cost approximately $0.5 billion (100% project). Woodside's position in Scarborough supports our strategy of unlocking shareholder value, which is contradicted by ex-CEO Peter Coleman's 2021 statement that 'the era of massive new LNG projects is over for Australia'. [8] Alignment of Woodside's equity in both the upstream Scarborough resource and downstream Pluto LNG infrastructure provides for greater control and certainty of development. Woodside can realise the value from development of the material unallocated 7.3 Tcf (2C, 100%) Scarborough gas field through a lower-cost brownfield expansion of our high-reliability Pluto LNG facility. [2] The current cost estimates are subject to ongoing legal and environmental challenges, including a case before the Supreme Court of Western Australia [9] set to be heard later in 2021. Investors have raised concerns that the proposed costs for this project are 'crazy from the perspective of Woodside shareholders [10] ' and 'financially illiterate [11] '. Additionally, the merger and subsequent Final Investment Decision are contingent on shareholder approval votes, despite being described as 'a disastrous outcome for Woodside shareholders and climate. [12]
The Shtokman field, one of the world's largest natural gas fields, lies in the northwestern part of the South Barents Basin in the Russian sector of the Barents Sea, 600 kilometres (370 mi) north of Kola Peninsula. Its reserves are estimated at 3.8 trillion cubic metres of natural gas and more than 37 million tons of gas condensate.

Murujuga, formerly known as Dampier Island and today usually known as the Burrup Peninsula, is an area in the Dampier Archipelago, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, containing the town of Dampier. The Dampier Rock Art Precinct, which covers the entire archipelago, is the subject of ongoing political debate due to historical and proposed industrial development. Over 40% of Murujuga lies within Murujuga National Park, which contains within it the world's largest collection of ancient 40,000 year old rock art (petroglyphs).

The North West Shelf Venture, situated in the north-west of Western Australia, is Australia's largest resource development project. It involves the extraction of petroleum at offshore production platforms, onshore processing and export of liquefied natural gas, and production of natural gas for industrial, commercial and domestic use within the state.
The Gorgon gas project is a multi-decade natural gas project in Western Australia, involving the development of the Greater Gorgon gas fields, subsea gas-gathering infrastructure, and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant on Barrow Island. The project also includes a domestic gas component. Construction was completed in 2017.
Wheatstone LNG is a liquefied natural gas plant operating in the Ashburton North Strategic Industrial Area, which is located 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) west of Onslow, Western Australia. The project is operated by Chevron.
The petroleum industry in Western Australia is the largest contributor to the country's petroleum exports. Western Australia's North West Shelf (NWS) is the primary location from which production originates. Oil exports are shipped from Port Hedland.
Yamal project, also referred to as Yamal megaproject, is a long-term plan to exploit and bring to the markets the vast natural gas reserves in the Yamal Peninsula, Russia. Administratively, the project is located in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
The Browse LNG was a liquefied natural gas plant project proposed for construction at James Price Point, 52 kilometres (32 mi) north of Broome on the Dampier Peninsula, Western Australia. It was considered by a joint venture including Woodside Petroleum, Shell, BP, Japan Australia LNG and BHP Billiton. It would have processed natural gas extracted from the Browse Basin. Liquefied natural gas would then be shipped from a port facility also located in the Browse LNG Precinct.
Prelude FLNG is a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) platform owned by Shell plc and built by the Technip–Samsung Consortium (TSC) in South Korea for a joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell, KOGAS, and Inpex. The hull was launched in December 2013.
The Ichthys gas field is a natural gas field located in the Timor Sea, off the northwestern coast of Australia. The field is located 220 km (140 mi) offshore Western Australia and 820 km (510 mi) southwest of Darwin, with an average water depth of approximately 250 m (820 ft). It was discovered in 2000 and developed by Inpex in partnership with Total, Tokyo Gas, Osaka Gas, Chubu Electric Power, Toho Gas, Kansai Electric Power and CPC.
Offshore geotechnical engineering is a sub-field of geotechnical engineering. It is concerned with foundation design, construction, maintenance and decommissioning for human-made structures in the sea. Oil platforms, artificial islands and submarine pipelines are examples of such structures. The seabed has to be able to withstand the weight of these structures and the applied loads. Geohazards must also be taken into account. The need for offshore developments stems from a gradual depletion of hydrocarbon reserves onshore or near the coastlines, as new fields are being developed at greater distances offshore and in deeper water, with a corresponding adaptation of the offshore site investigations. Today, there are more than 7,000 offshore platforms operating at a water depth up to and exceeding 2000 m. A typical field development extends over tens of square kilometers, and may comprise several fixed structures, infield flowlines with an export pipeline either to the shoreline or connected to a regional trunkline.
Bangladesh suffers with heavy energy crisis with the gradual expansion of economic activities of the country. The estimations and reserves of energy resources show future potentials but a small fraction of them are being utilized which proved to be insufficient. Moreover, the impact of climate change and environment pollution has also been significantly felt. As a result, the successive governments have aimed at formulating an effective energy policy which would address these concerns. The energy policies have also received extensive criticisms especially on the questions of energy export and methods of extraction.
The Galata gas field is a natural gas field located on the continental shelf of the Black Sea approximately 25km Southeast of Varna, Bulgaria. The field was the first to be developed offshore Bulgaria, and at peak production provided more than 16% of Bulgaria's domestic gas needs, the platform and associated infrastructure is still the only production facility located in the Bulgarian Black Sea.

Oil and gas reserves denote discovered quantities of crude oil and natural gas that can be profitably produced/recovered from an approved development. Oil and gas reserves tied to approved operational plans filed on the day of reserves reporting are also sensitive to fluctuating global market pricing. The remaining resource estimates are likely sub-commercial and may still be under appraisal with the potential to be technically recoverable once commercially established. Natural gas is frequently associated with oil directly and gas reserves are commonly quoted in barrels of oil equivalent (BoE). Consequently, both oil and gas reserves, as well as resource estimates, follow the same reporting guidelines, and are referred to collectively hereinafter as oil & gas.
