School of Thought is the second studio album by American nu metal band Ded. Released on 15 October 2021, the work was produced by Kevin Churko [1] and published via Suretone Records. [2]
In March 2020, the quartet released tracks for "A Mannequin Idol (Lullaby)" and "Eyes Sewn Shut", both a part of their Mannequin Eyes EP. [3] [4]
During May 2020, the ensemble released a music video for "A Mannequin Idol (Lullaby)". [5] Directed by Marc Klasfeld, the song title is a play on words for "American Idol". [6] [5]
Then, in August 2021, the group released "Kill Beautiful Things", the first song involving new guitarist Alex Adamcik. The tune began with a demo transmitted by Adamcik and bass player Kyle Koelsch, with singer Joe Cotela playing the work in his vehicle and writing the lyrics while sitting in the driver seat. [7]
Augusta Battoclette of Alternative Press stated "From the evocative vocals on “Kill Beautiful Things” to the anthemic “Half Alive,” it’s clear that DED are embracing their sonic growth and maturity as a rock outfit". [8]
Jeannie Blue of Cryptic Rock indicated that "With the passing of four years, the quartet—Vocalist Joe Cotela, Guitarist Alex Adamcik, Bassist Kyle Koelsch, and Drummer Matt Reinhard—has evolved from thick Nu Metal influences that proudly waved a sonic “FMFY” middle finger toward a more refined cynicism", going on to say that "Much as 2017’s Mis•an•thrope sought to provoke, School of Thought inspires discussion of false idols, willful ignorance, mental health, and begs listeners to “stop making stupid people famous”". Regarding "A Mannequin Idol (Lullaby)" and "Eyes Sewn Shut", Kevin Rutherford of Billboard professed that they "largely follow that same formula, albeit with less of a rap rock edge that occasionally permeated Mis-an-thrope and a radio-ready nu-metal sound courtesy of Kevin Churko, one of the genre's more in-demand producers (Five Finger Death Punch, Disturbed)". [3]
That Music Magazine said that "The new track “A Mannequin Idol (Lullaby)” takes on the conveyor-belt music machine and the fake, surface-level aspects of our society that have somehow entered our society influencing what’s real in life" going on to describe “Eyes Sewn Shut” as having "explosive guitars and a message that challenges that things we accept so readily to be true". Blabbermouth.net stated that "The Phoenix-based band's new music takes on the fury of its debut and deepens the emotions with a compassion for humanity and a thought-provoking consciousness that we can all be and do better, not only for ourselves but each other". [10]
In 2021, the four piece toured the United States with American rock bands Black Veil Brides and In This Moment. [2] [11]

Staind is an American rock band formed in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1995. The original lineup consisted of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Aaron Lewis, lead guitarist Mike Mushok, bassist and backing vocalist Johnny April, and drummer Jon Wysocki. The lineup has been stable outside of the 2011 departure of Wysocki, who was replaced by Sal Giancarelli. Staind has recorded seven studio albums: Tormented (1996), Dysfunction (1999), Break the Cycle (2001), 14 Shades of Grey (2003), Chapter V (2005), The Illusion of Progress (2008), and Staind (2011). The band's activity became more sporadic after their self-titled release, with Lewis pursuing a solo country music career and Mushok subsequently joining the band Saint Asonia, but they have continued to tour on and off in the following years. In 2016, Lewis reiterated that the band had not broken up, and would possibly create another album, but that his then-current focus was on his solo career. The band reunited more permanently in 2019 for several shows, continuing with live appearances in 2020. Many of their singles have reached high positions on US rock and all-format charts as well, including "It's Been Awhile", "Fade", "Price to Play", "So Far Away", and "Right Here".
Trapt is an American rock band formed in Los Gatos, California. It consists of vocalist Chris Taylor Brown, bassist Pete Charell and guitarist Brendan Hengle. They have recorded eight studio albums to date: Amalgamation (1999), Trapt (2002), Someone in Control (2005), Only Through the Pain (2008), No Apologies (2010), Reborn (2013), DNA (2016), and Shadow Work (2020). Trapt is best known for their 2002 hit "Headstrong".
Mudvayne is an American heavy metal band formed in Peoria, Illinois, in 1996. Known for their sonic experimentation, face and body paint, masks and uniforms, the band has sold over six million records worldwide, including nearly three million in the United States. The group consist of guitarist Greg Tribbett, drummer Matthew McDonough, lead vocalist Chad Gray, and bassist Ryan Martinie. The band became popular in the late-1990s Peoria, Illinois in the underground music scene, and found success with the single "Dig" from their debut album L.D. 50 (2000). After releasing four more albums and touring relentlessly for nearly a decade, Mudvayne went on hiatus in 2010. They reunited in 2021 and continue to perform live.
Mushroomhead is an American heavy metal band from Cleveland, Ohio. Formed in 1993 in the Cleveland Warehouse District, the band is known for their avant-garde sound which includes influence from metal, art rock and electro-industrial and their imagery which features masks and costumes as well as their unique live shows usually performed at smaller venues.
In This Moment is an American alternative metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed by singer Maria Brink and guitarist Chris Howorth in 2005. They found drummer Jeff Fabb and started the band as Dying Star. Unhappy with their musical direction, they changed their name to In This Moment and gained two band members, guitarist Blake Bunzel and bassist Josh Newell. In 2005, bassist Newell left the band and was replaced by Jesse Landry.
Maria Brink is an American singer and songwriter, best known as the frontwoman of American alternative metal band In This Moment. The band has gone on to release seven studio albums and receive four nominations, two from Alternative Press Music Awards, one from Grammy Awards, and one from Loudwire Music Awards.
The Damned Things are an American rock supergroup consisting of Fall Out Boy's Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley, Anthrax's Scott Ian, Every Time I Die's Keith Buckley, and Alkaline Trio's Dan Andriano. The band's name is inspired by the lyrics in Ram Jam's 1977 version of "Black Betty".
Kevin Gregory Churko is a Canadian musician, sound engineer, songwriter, and record producer best known for his work with artists such as Ozzy Osbourne, Papa Roach, Modern Science, Five Finger Death Punch, Disturbed, In This Moment, Shania Twain, and Hellyeah. After spending four years in Switzerland under the tutelage of producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, Churko has emerged as one of the music industry's leading engineers/producers. He currently resides in Las Vegas, where he works out of his private studio, "The Hideout". He is the father of Kane Churko.

Despite this, some material from the sessions will still appear in the final release. The album's name was changed to They Got Us Right Where They Want Us, At Each Other's Throats prior to receiving its final name, Murica. The album was scheduled for release in 2021.
