Deadbeat is the stage name of Scott Montieth, a Canadian electronica musician. His music often has a political focus. [1] He uses a laptop to create his music, including live shows. [2] Deadbeat's early albums were created in Montreal, Quebec; he currently works and lives in Berlin.

Early life

Montieth was born in Kitchener, Ontario. [1]

Career

Living and performing in Montreal, Montieth released his first album in 2001; his next album, Wildlife Documentaries, came out a year later. [3] Montieth then began performing with Steve Beaupré in the duo Crackhaus. In 2003 he performed at the Mutek and Sonar festivals. [4]

In 2004, a few months after his marriage, Montieth released a third Deadbeat album, Something Borrowed, Something Blue [5]

In 2005, while Montieth was still living in Montreal, [6] Deadbeat released an album, New World Observer, on Pole's "~scape" label. [7] Pop singer Athésia appeared as a guest vocalist on the album. [8]

In 2006 Montieth moved to Berlin, Germany, and subsequently performed at a number of clubs and festivals. [9]

In 2018, Monteith reached out to Cowboy Junkies to ask if they had any plans to commemorate the 30th anniversary of their breakthrough 1988 album The Trinity Session , which he loves, like they did with Trinity Revisited for its 20th. They told him that they didn't, but would enthusiastically support whatever angle he wanted to run with. Monteith approached musician/producer/fellow Canadian-in-Berlin Fatima Camara about working with him on this project, and she was thrilled to participate. After several meetings, they set up in Berlin's Chez Cherie studio, and made the proceedings reverent to the original by exploring the acoustic properties of the space and minimizing their arrangements to do so. This was also the first project either had done which placed so much emphasis on their singing voices. The end result, released in 2019 on 2LP/CD/download by Constellation, was Deadbeat & Camara's Trinity Thirty, a full cover of the major release of the album. One bit of fun they had was including a cover of Patsy Cline's "Walkin' After Midnight" in their version of the Junkies' original song "I Don't Get It," turning it into "I Don't Get It After Midnight (Medley)." In 2019 Deadbeat picked his eight favorite cuts from the LNOE back catalog to rework, providing new ‘dub’ interpretations of tracks from Sasha, Hunter/Game, Ejeca, Jody Barr, VONDA7, Alex Niggemann, Jon Gurd and Dubspeeka. Last Night On Earth welcomed the prolific Deadbeat with a special vinyl ‘LNOE in Dub’ compilation, featuring a new Sasha exclusive. The DJ/producer, sound artist, and music tech educator already has an extensive resume of labels and collaborators including Echocord, Mutek, Sonar, RBMA, and Monolake. [11]

The Trinity Session is the second studio album by Canadian alternative country band Cowboy Junkies, released in early 1988 by Latent Recordings in Canada, and re-released worldwide later in the year on RCA Records. "Working on a Building" and "Blue Moon Revisited " did not appear on the Latent Records release. "Blue Moon Revisited" was originally released on It Came from Canada, Vol. 4 (1988), a compilation of Canadian independent bands.

Ghislain Poirier, often known simply as Poirier, is a Canadian DJ/producer from Montreal who is signed to the Ninja Tune record label. The Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) is a world-traveling series of music workshops and festivals that was founded in 1998 by Red Bull GmbH. The main five-week event is held in a different city each year. The public portion of its program is a festival of concerts, art installations, club nights and lectures by influential figures in contemporary music. The other part of the program is by invitation only and is held in a building that has been custom-fitted with a large recording studio, a lecture hall, a radio booth and 8–12 bedroom-sized studios. There, 60 up-and-coming producers, singers, sound artists, DJs and musicians from around the world learn from and collaborate with top industry professionals.

Blue Hawaii are a Canadian electronic music duo from Montreal, Quebec, composed of Braids member Raphaelle "Ra" Standell-Preston and Alex "Agor" Kerby. They have released an EP, Blooming Summer (2010) and three studio albums, Untogether (2013), Tenderness (2017) and Open Reduction Internal Fixation (2019) all on Arbutus Records. The first two albums were nominated for the Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year.

Daniel Gardner is a Canadian electronic musician known better by his artist name Frivolous. Born in 1980, near Vancouver, B.C., Gardner received early training in classical piano, but found his calling when he undertook Electronic Music studies. He moved to Montreal in the early 2000s and then to Berlin in 2005. In 2012, Gardner returned to Canada's west coast, while continuing to maintain his Berlin ties and tour internationally.

Kara-Lis Coverdale, also known as K-LC, is a Canadian composer, musician, producer, based in Montreal, Quebec. Coverdale is known equally for her piano, organ, and keyboard work as she is for her experimental electronic projects; often her work integrates the two, blurring the lines between traditional composition and research-based modernism. Her 25 minute album Grafts (2017) was named an album of the year by Noisey, Crack, Boomkat, Resident Advisor, Tinymixtapes, and more.

Sebastian Meissner is an artist, electronic musician, journalist, radio-producer and photographer. Under monikers such as Random Inc, Random Industries and Bizz Circuits he released several albums for influential electronica label Mille Plateaux. He also composed music for German independent label Kompakt under the name Klimek. Followed up by releases on New Yorker Anticipate Recordings and Belgian Sub Rosa label. He has collaborated with Ekkehard Ehlers under the name Autopoieses and with Israeli audio-visual artist Ran Slavin as b.Z_ToneR. For his project Not By Note he received in 2011 an honorary mention in the category Digital Musics & Sound Art at Prix Ars Electronica.

Jens Berents Christiansen, also known as Rumpistol, is a Danish producer and musician, who writes and performs electronic music. He has been releasing music since 2003 and has received positive reviews from magazines such as Intro.deDe:Bug and Danish magazine GAFFA. The latter gave Rumpistol 6/6 for his 2008 album Dynamo.
