Scott Sonnon is a US government research scientist in biotechnology, [1] a martial art expert, creator of The Saddle SAMBO System, fitness coach, dyslexia advocate and wellness speaker. [2] He has worked with movie stars such as Peta Wilson [3] and fashion designer Donna Karan [4] as well as Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial arts fighters such as Alberto Crane, Jorge Rivera, Andrei Arlovski, and Elvis Sinosic. He currently leads Human Performance for the United States Department of Energy [5] and United States military special operations research in breathing techniques to improve performance and selection rates, [6] and provides training, machine learning data analytics and biotechnology to special operations forces, intelligence officers and federal emergency response personnel through one of the US Department of Energy National Laboratories. Scott Sonnon was voted one of "The 6 Most Influential Martial Artists of the 21st Century" by Black Belt Magazine in 2010. [8]

As a dyslexic, institutionalized as a child, Scott Sonnon became a TED Fellow speaking on the nature of multiple learning styles being misdiagnosed as learning disabilities, [9] and now travels the country giving talks advocating congressional legislation (House Resolution 456) for dyslexia educational support in public schools. [10]

Scott Sonnon was named one of "Top 25 Fitness Trainers in the World" by "Men's Fitness Magazine" in 2011. [11] He was named by Men's Health Magazine, the creator of the "World's Smartest Workout" (called TACFIT) in 2014. [12] He is a global staff trainer for the 2014 Nike Academy. [13]

His fitness system, Circular Strength Training, has been adopted by members of the United States military and law enforcement community. He is also a published author, a public speaker, [14] [15] and an advocate in the fight against childhood obesity. [14]

Early life

Sonnon was born in 1969, in Pennsylvania, USA. His family emigrated to the United States two generations before him from the town of Sonnon, district of Passau, Bavaria, Germany. He overcame being legally blind due to myopia and Thygeson's disease, spending his youth in pain with Osteochondrosis and obesity, and suffering learning disabilities such as dyslexia. [14] Sonnon is a member of Mensa International and has been a keynote speaker for the High IQ organization. [15]

Martial arts training

Sonnon is credited as having reintroduced Indian clubs in the form of clubbells to strength training. [16] By 2007 he had been inducted into three halls of fame: the National Fitness Hall of Fame, [17] the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame [18] and the Personal Trainer Hall of Fame, [19] and is known to the Sambo and Russian martial arts communities. [20] It has been reported that he is so highly regarded in Sambo training that people have been known to fly thousands of miles in order to attend one of his workshops. [21]

Matt Larsen is a former United States Marine, United States Army Ranger and Black Belt Magazine Hall of Fame combatives instructor. Doc-Fai Wong (黄德輝) is recognized internationally as a master of the Hung Sing branch of Choy Li Fut kung fu and T'ai chi ch'uan. He was born in 1948 in the Guangdong (广东) province of China; the Wangshan village of Wushan - Doumen district of Zhuhai City. In April 1960, he immigrated to San Francisco, California with his mother to be reunited with his father. He arrived as a third-generation citizen of the United States of America since both his grandfather and father were already citizens. He sought out his first kung fu teacher - Lau Bun (劉彬), the founder of the first Hung Sing Kwoon of Choy Li Fut in America, after encountering taunting and bullying due to language and ethnic difficulties after his arrival. When Lau Bun died in 1967, he started teaching and opened his first school when he was 19 years old.

Anatoly Arkadyevich Kharlampiyev, was a Russian researcher of various kinds of national wrestling and martial arts, Merited Master of Sports of the USSR, and Honored Coach of Sports of the USSR. He was one of the founders of Sambo, a martial art technique developed in the Soviet Union. Kharlampiyev worked as a physical education trainer at the Communist University of the Toilers of the East, and also was a student of boxing, fencing, acrobatics, and mountaineering. In 1938, Kharlampiyev presented Sambo to the USSR All-Union Sports Committee, which recognized the martial art as an official sport.

He has won championships and accolades in multiple sports, most notably in MMA Pride Fighting Championships, FIAS World Combat Sambo Championship, and Russian Judo Federation National Championship.

To-Shin Do is a martial art founded by Black Belt Hall of Fame instructor Stephen K. Hayes in 1997. It is a modernized version of ninjutsu, and differs from the traditional form taught by Masaaki Hatsumi’s Bujinkan organization. Instruction focuses on threats found in contemporary western society. In addition to hand-to-hand combat skills, students are exposed to: methods for survival in hostile environments, security protection for dignitaries, how to instruct classes and run a school, classical Japanese weapons, meditation mind science, and health restoration yoga. The headquarters school (hombu) is located in Dayton, Ohio, USA.

Antonio Graceffo is an American economist, China analyst, martial artist, and author who has lived in several Asian countries. He is a frequent guest, providing analysis of the Chinese economy and geopolitics, on various shows on New Tang Dynasty Television, including Talking Points, The Wide Angle, China in Focus, and Forbidden News. He is also the host of the web TV show, Martial Arts Odyssey, which traces his ongoing journey through Asia learning martial arts in various countries. Graceffo is credited with helping to revitalize the lost Khmer martial art of Bokator by being the first to report on it in English in the post-Pol Pot era. Beyond martial arts, Graceffo is also a student of multiple languages, including Mandarin Chinese, Thai, Khmer, Vietnamese, German, Spanish, Italian, and French.

Jim Arvanitis is a Greek-American martial artist and professional trainer of Mixed Martial Arts/Hybrid Reality Combat based on the pankration model, and author of several books and videos relating to pankration. He is considered Pankration's Renaissance Man and the founder of Neo-Pankration, a blend of the remnants of the ancient pankration and elements found in modern sources such as Western boxing, savate, Greco-Roman wrestling, Muay-thai, and combat judo. He holds the rank of Great Grandmaster, 11th Dan from the World Pankration Dan Ranking.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vasili Oshchepkov</span> Russian martial artist

Vasiliy Sergeyevich Oshchepkov ; was a Russian researcher of different types of national wrestling and martial arts. He was ranked as a Merited Master of Sports of the USSR and an Honored Coach of the USSR. He was one of the founders of Sambo, a martial art developed in the Soviet Union. During the political purges of 1937, Oshchepkov was accused of being a Japanese spy, and was executed in prison as a result.

Decoding Dyslexia is a grassroots movement focused on improving access to educational interventions for students with dyslexia in the public education system. Formed in 2011, the organization's mission is to "raise dyslexia awareness, to empower families to support their children and to inform policy-makers on best practices to identify, remediate and support students with dyslexia".
