Sean Lance Berdy (born June 3, 1993) is an American actor. He began his career as a child in the film sequel The Sandlot 2 and is known for his roles in the television series The Society and Switched at Birth.
Berdy, a native of Boca Raton, Florida, was born deaf. He is bilingual; his first language is American Sign Language (ASL) and he speaks English. [1] As a child, Berdy was interested in magic. He won the young magicians top award at the World Magicians Festival in Saint Petersburg. [2] [ unreliable source? ] Berdy was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when he was 11 years old. [1] His formal acting career began in 2005 with his appearance in The Sandlot 2 . He subsequently had roles in Bondage , The Deaf Family, and The Legend of the Mountain Man. Berdy was featured in several public service commercials. [2]
Berdy relocated to California in 2011 for his role in Switched at Birth in which, he starred as Emmett Bledsoe, son of Melody Bledsoe, played by Marlee Matlin. He was nominated for the 2011 Teen Choice Awards under the TV category for breakout star. [1] He completed high school remotely while filming. [3] Berdy provided the on-camera ASL dubbing of Ice Age: Continental Drift . [2] In 2019, he starred as Sam Eliot, in the Netflix show The Society . [1]
In May 2019, Berdy reported that he was writing a movie about a love story featuring ASL. [1]
He is also a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Realty in Scottsdale, Arizona. [4]

American Sign Language literature is one of the most important shared cultural experiences in the American deaf community. Literary genres initially developed in residential Deaf institutes, such as American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut, which is where American Sign Language developed as a language in the early 19th century. There are many genres of ASL literature, such as narratives of personal experience, poetry, cinematographic stories, folktales, translated works, original fiction and stories with handshape constraints. Authors of ASL literature use their body as the text of their work, which is visually read and comprehended by their audience viewers. In the early development of ASL literary genres, the works were generally not analyzed as written texts are, but the increased dissemination of ASL literature on video has led to greater analysis of these genres.
Switched at Birth is an American teen and family drama television series that premiered on ABC Family on June 6, 2011.
