Sean Patrick Kelly [1] (born 9 November 1958) is an Australian singer, guitarist and songwriter best known as a founding member of the bands Models, Absent Friends and The Dukes. [2]

Biography

In his youth, Kelly was exposed to a variety of musical genres that eventually influenced his own style. [3] Before developing a taste for pop music and the Top 40s, he would listen to his parents classical music and show tunes. [3] Growing up in an Irish Catholic family, he was exposed to music from an early age. His mother, sisters and cousins play the piano, and he too learned how to play before switching to the guitar and drums in his teens. [3]

At age 13, he took up guitar lessons and was taught by Ian Miller from JPY (John Paul Young) and the Allstars. [3] [4] Although his first love was the drums, he shifted focus to the guitar to further his ambitions as a songwriter. [3] He met James Freud (Colin McGlinchey) in high school (St Thomas More Catholic Boys College) [5] and the two of them got together with Ian McFarlane to form their first band. [3] At the age of 15, he left home and moved into a boarding house in St Kilda, busking at Kings Cross and Paddy’s Market in Sydney. [3] [4]

Kelly started his professional career in 1977 in Spred, later called Teenage Radio Stars, alongside James Freud, who eventually joined him in Models. [6] [7] This was his first foray into the world of punk rock. Kelly joined the band when he was invited by Freud to replace another guitarist and even took on the role of a vocalist for the first time. [3] [4] After leaving Teenage Radio Stars, Kelly and fellow band member Peter Sutcliffe (Pierre Voltaire) joined with former JAB members Janis Friedenfelds (Johnny Crash) and Ash Wednesday to form Models. [8] The Models continued, with many line-up changes, until 1988 when it disbanded. [2]

Kelly released a solo single "Thankyou Goodnight" in 1989 and formed Absent Friends with his partner Wendy Matthews and Garry Gary Beers that same year. After a top ten album, Here's Looking Up Your Address (#7), a top ten single, "I Don't Wanna Be With Nobody But You" (#4), and an ARIA award the band broke up in 1990. Kelly provided guitar on Matthews' debut solo album, Émigré (November 1990).

Sean Kelly and The Iron Dukes were formed in 1990, becoming The Dukes soon after. After releasing the ARIA nominated album Harbour City the band broke up in 1993.

Since then, Kelly has played with Interchange Bench (1993–1998) alongside Andrew Duffield, Billy Miller, Ken Firth and Cal McCalpine; and also with Astrid Munday and Dystopia (1996–1999), together with Astrid Munday (vocals), Stephen Moffat (guitar), Tim Cleaver (bass), Shamus Goble (drums), Rosie Westbrook (bass) and Craig Williamson (drums). Kelly toured with a reformed Models in 2000 and 2001 before releasing his first solo album Moons of Jupiter in 2006. [2]

In 2010, Sean Kelly was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame for his work with The Models, alongside his former bandmates (James Freud, Barton Price, Roger Mason, Andrew Duffield, Mark Ferrie and James Valentine). [9] [10] [11] [2] Over the years, Kelly has led several reunion shows of The Models and toured with a reformed version of the band alongside Mark Ferrie, Barton Price and Andrew Duffield. [4] Most notably, the band reunited to perform at the Homebake Festival and the Countdown Spectacular in 2006, followed by a series of one-off concerts with varying lineups. [4] [12] [13]

She released Top 20 hit singles in the 1990s including "Token Angels", "Let's Kiss ", "The Day You Went Away" and "Friday's Child" with Top 20 albums, You've Always Got The Blues, Émigré, Lily, The Witness Tree and her compilation, Stepping Stones. She has won six Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Awards. According to rock music historian, Ian McFarlane she provides "extraordinary, crystal-clear vocals [...] a soulfulness that was the mark of a truly gifted singer".

Sacred Cowboys are an Australian post-punk and rock band formed by mainstay Garry Gray, as lead singer-songwriter, and Mark Ferrie in 1982. The line-up has changed as the group splintered and reformed several times, being active from 1982 to 1985, 1987 to 1991, 1994 to 1997 and 2006 to 2008. The August 2006 line-up was Gray with Stephan Fidock on drums; Penny Ikinger on guitar; Spencer P. Jones on guitar; Nick Rischbieth on bass guitar; and Ash Wednesday on keyboards. Alphabravocharliedeltaechofoxtrotgolf is the first album by Australian new wave group Models. The title alludes to the first seven letters of the NATO phonetic alphabet. The LP album cover claimed it was produced by no-one, in fact, it was recorded independently by engineer Tony Cohen and the group, prior to signing with Mushroom Records. It was released in November 1980, but no singles were released commercially from the album, although "Two People Per km²" and "Uncontrollable Boy" were on a 12-inch disc released to radio stations, and a music video was made for "Two People Per km²".

James Randall Freud was an Australian rock musician-songwriter. He was a member of Models during the 1980s and wrote their two most popular singles, "Barbados" and "Out of Mind, Out of Sight".

Bohdan Roman Kubiakowski, better known by his stage name, Bohdan X, is a British-born former punk rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. He was a member of JAB, which formed in Adelaide in 1976, and Bohdan and the Instigators, which featured in the Melbourne punk rock scene in the late 1970s. He was also a DJ on 3RRR community radio station from 1978 to 1995.

JAB were an Australian punk rock band, which formed in Adelaide in 1976. The original line-up was Johnny Crash on drums and vocals, Ash Wednesday on bass guitar, synthesiser and tapes, and Bohdan X on guitar and vocals. Johnny Crash died on 24 January 2014.

It featured a number of notable Australian musicians including Sean Kelly, Andrew Duffield, James Valentine, Garry Gary Beers (INXS), Geoffrey Stapleton (GANGgajang) and Wendy Matthews.

The Dukes were an Australian rock band active from 1991 to 1994. Initially called Sean Kelly and the Iron Dukes, they were formed by Sean Kelly on vocals and keyboards; and Geoffrey Stapleton on keyboards and guitar. They were soon joined by Michael Armiger on bass guitar; Michael King on guitar and backing vocals; and John Mackay on drums and percussion.

Big on Love is a song by Australian new wave rock band Models. It was released as a single on 18 November 1984, well ahead of its parent album, Out of Mind, Out of Sight, which was issued in August 1985. It peaked at No. 24 on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart in December 1984, remaining at that position for two weeks. It was produced for Mushroom Records by Reggie Lucas, and was co-written by Sean Kelly, the group's lead guitarist and lead vocalist, and Lucas. For the single, Models line up was Kelly, James Freud on backing vocals and bass guitar, Andrew Duffield on keyboards, and Barton Price on drums.

Andrew Peter Duffield is an Australian musician, producer and teacher. He has been a member, on keyboards, synthesisers or electronics, for various groups, including Whirlywirld, Models and Absent Friends. Duffield has also been a backing musician for other artists both on tours and for studio sessions.

Michael William Armiger is an English-born Australian guitarist and teacher. He has been a member of various groups including Paul Kelly Band (1983–84), Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls (1985–86), John Kennedy's Love Gone Wrong (1987–88), The Johnnys, The Go-Betweens (1989), and Sean Kelly and the Iron Dukes (1990).
